Quentin Tarantino
Although this is a horror site and most of Quentin Tarantino's work is not horror, i'm interested to know what you guys think is his best work...
For me, it is hard to pick the best in his work becuase they're all so fucking cool! If i had to choose i'd say Pulp Fiction - because of the way it is wrote ( similar to his style in Resivior Dogs )and just what a cool movie it is - and From Dusk Till Dawn - 'Come on pussy lovers'. |
Resivior Dogs
have you watched the extras on the Dogs Special Edition DVD ...theres a great interview. |
Yeah, the interview was cool.
|
Ive only seen Kill Bill [Both Parts] and it was AMAZING I loved it.
I saw part of Pulp Fiction, but just couldnt get it to it. I might have to rent it again tho.... |
Res Dogs was my favorite with JAckie Brown as a close second .... until I saw Kill Bill (1 & 2)
They blew everything else out of the water. I never cared for Pulp Fiction .. it was just a flashier Res Dogs to me... |
Jackie Brown was a good film too. I was always meaning to watch it for about 5 or 6 years lol, never got round to it, until I bought the QT Special Edition boxset, came with Dogs, Jackie and Pulp Fiction.
anyone got any info on what he's upto, with regards to new films? anything gona be released this year? |
i read he's taking Kill Bill 1 and 2 and re-editing them into a new single movie.. with extra footage and stuff ... to make it a completely different film ..
I hope thats wrong ... |
Quote:
hmmm that'll be a bloody long film then 4 or 5 hours with extra footage, unless he edits out loads of the original stuff, which would be pointless as it would mess up the film. |
thats what i'm sayin ..
best leave it alone and go on to exploit another era of filmmaking .. he should do a legit Samurai pic ... |
I get labeled an evil person for this all the time, but i think ol Qt is overrated. Granted, Pulp Fiction was a eork of genius, and i really Like True Romance, but most of his stuff is just over the top to me, to the point that i dont find it enjoyable.
I knwo a lot of people place a great deal of value on the dialogue in his movies, and i think that is why i am at odds with everyone else so much. i think dialogue should do it's best to push the plot foward, with no frame or word wasted. Qt does what a lot of indie film makers do: Tons of dialogue that is completely extraneous to the plot. Did the "Like a virgin" conversation have any bearing on the rest of the movie in resevoir dogs? if it did, i missed that part. i do appreciate that his love of pulp culture and use of it in his movies has ironically placed him in the same position of the people he admires, but that just means im giving credit where it is due. im sntill not much of a fan. |

Vincent: Want some bacon? Jules: No man, I don't eat pork. Vincent: Are you Jewish? Jules: Nah, I ain't Jewish, I just don't dig on swine, that's all. Vincent: Why not? Jules: Pigs are filthy animals. I don't eat filthy animals. Vincent: Bacon tastes gooood. Pork chops taste gooood. Jules: Hey, sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I'd never know 'cause I wouldn't eat the filthy motherfucker. Pigs sleep and root in shit. That's a filthy animal. I ain't eat nothin' that ain't got enough sense enough to disregard its own faeces. Vincent: How about a dog? Dogs eats its own feces. Jules: I don't eat dog either. Vincent: Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? Jules: I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way. Vincent: Ah, so by that rationale, if a pig had a better personality, he would cease to be a filthy animal. Is that true? Jules: Well we'd have to be talkin' about one charmin' motherfuckin' pig. I mean he'd have to be ten times more charmin' than that Arnold on Green Acres, you know what I'm sayin'? |

Tarantino has a brilliant ear and knows how to duplicate the feel of dimestore novel cheezy dialogue and stand it on its ear. My problem with Pulp fiction is that he did it too much too soon after Reseviour Dogs. Thats what made Dogs brilliant ... the breakfast table meeting with gangsters discussing the credibility of Madonna ... He used that same hook (gansters talking way above themselves) with Pulp Fiction and it turned me off (the Mcdonalds in Paris conversation) - it seemed like he just wanted to repeat the formula. That bothered me plus I didnt like the choices in the actors at that time (Bruce Willis and the french girl) . I got the feeling that he was aiming too high, too slick in that film. He got back to basics with the solid JAckie Brown, then went completely balls out with the Kill Bills. If anything, I think he's still underrated ... he's a very entheusiastic genius. From what I've seen of him in interviews etc ... he'd drive me fucking nuts in person, but he's a brilliant craftsman with great vision |
Good points, guys. But i still dont like him. I RESPECT his work, but i dont care for most of it.
But then again, the only Japanese horro rmovie i like so far is Audition, and i dont like Italian horror. Thought Suspiria was a waste of time. I dare to be different. i am different and it annoys people, as opposed to being different JUST to annoy people. |

that was an awesome convo... one day I'm gona get round to ripping the entire film on audio cd just for that sort of dialogue, just so I can listen to it in the car, on long journeys. |
You know what's on my mind right now?
It ain't the coffee in my kitchen. It's the dead nigger. In my garage. |
its the one that says bad mother fucker
but my fav work by him has to be res dogs and True Romance |
;)
|
I haven't seen Jackie Brown, but everything else he's written/directed (and one movie he only wrote) made my top 100 list
|
Hmmm.
Suddenly my Bad Mother Fucker don't seem so cool. Damn Viz. |
My favorite would have to be From Dusk till Dawn. I hate to admit it, but I have yet to see Kill Bill Vol 1 or 2. I went to buy it Friday and it was out. I'll try again another time.

sounds like you just want the straight and narrow ! |
1. Resevoir Dogs
2. Pulp Fiction " Shiiiiiiiiiiiiit negro, that's all you had to say" ;) |
"With the exception of Eddie and myself, whom you already know, we're going to be using aliases on this job. Under no circumstances do I want any one of you to relate to each other by your Christian names, and I don't want any talk about yourself personally. That includes where you been, your wife's name, where you might've done time, or maybe a bank you robbed in St. Petersburg. All I want you guys to talk about, if you have to, is what you're going to do. That should do it. Here are your names..."
"Mr. Brown, Mr. White, Mr. Blonde, Mr. Blue, Mr. Orange, and Mr. Pink." ".....................Why am I Mr. Pink?" "Cause you're a faggot, ok?" ".....................How about if I'm Mr. Purple? That sounds good to me, I'll be Mr. Purple." "You're not Mr. Purple. Some guy on some other job is Mr. Purple. You're Mr. Pink!" "Who cares what your name is?" ".....................Yeah that's easy for you to say, you're Mr. White, you have a cool sounding name. Alright look if it's no big deal to be Mr. Pink, do you wanna trade?" "Hardy fuckin' har." |

I'm thinking that you arent a great fan of style over substance .. which is cool.. to each his own ... I can enjoy both ... but i really dig stylish films. I see you as a real Lucas fan ..cut and dried .. to the point ...very linear I'm not saying thats a bad thing .. lots of different styles out there ... (goddamn nerds .. cant appreciate art) oops, did i say that out loud ??!! :D :D |

I am a bigger Jim Cameron/Ridley Scott fan than anyone else, though. Give me some credit, at least im not a Bruckheimer/Bay kind of guy. Oh wait, those are also style over substance. You hit the nail on the head with that one. |
cameraon and scott make sense too (with the exception of scotts 'Legend') they are both very straight ahead filmmakers .. constant action - foreward movement.
(you probably like Friedkin as well ... as do I) I like them as well, and can appreciate the pace no nonsense filmmaking ... but i really enjoy the flipside too. I like a film that makes me sit up and go Woah ! at the action ... but i also like the trippy films that make me sit back and go woooooooooaaaaaahhhhhhh at the funkiness too. |
I like trippy, sometimes. I love a lot of terry gilliam's work, especially 12 monkeys. Time bandits messed with my head as a kid. And everything Monty Python did was genius. The Life of Brian and The Holy Grail have two of the best "what the fuck?" endings ever.
tje only thing that freidkin did that i am aware that i have seen was the exorcist, but his commentary kind of destroyed him as a person for me. he is as dry as burnt toast. I also like the nifty, neato little twisters like Fight Club, The Usual Suspects... I really wanted to lie Memento, but it tried way too hard and not enough happened. Plus, you find out at the end that the main character is an asshole who got mad at his partner and convinced himself that he was the bad guy so he could kill him without guilt.... Although, miss "Trinity" played an AWESOME bitch in it. |
