I started Vidocq last night when i was too tired ... I fell asleep
(subtitles will do that when i'm really sleepy) but the film was kicking ass ... incredibly beautiful visuals - rich and layered.
I'm looking forward to finishing it ..

Can you explain why ?

contrary to you i didn't like the acting, story nor visuals ! for me the only thing pitoff really took care of was the form ( not always great... ugh the special effects ) and forgot to tell a story ( which i found lacking ). and if any of you speak french... the dialogue is so laughable at times it unbelievable ( not at all coherent with the time it's supposed to take place in ).

but this is all just my own modest opinion. ;)

I saw this a few years ago. I liked it. Similar visuals to Juenet's "The City Of Lost Children" (Marc Caro was production desighner). I haven't seen Pitoff's "Catwoman" thing yet, but I'm pretty sure it'll suck.

The Gialli/thriller trend was started by Mario Bava with his two films ‘Evil Eye’ (La Ragaza che SapevaTroppo) in 1962 and the seminal thriller ‘Blood and Black Lace’ (Sei Donne per L’assassino) in 1963. Bava was influenced by Hitchcock, crime novels and German crime thrillers known as Krimi. By the Late sixties it was this style of sexy thriller was the main export, along with the Western, of the Cinecitta studios. They became known Gialli, which means yellow in Italian, because yellow was the colour used on the covers of the novels (by authors such as Edgar Wallace and Agatha Christie) on which they were based. Dario Argento made the Giallo big business in 1970 with ‘The Bird With The Crystal Plumage’(L’uccello dalle Piume di Cristallo). Soon there were several properties that a text-book Giallo should live up to such as:

-A gloved killer adorned in fetishistic attire such as black leather/PVC gloves or coat who’s identity is not revealed until the end.

-A contrived plot

-An investigator. Often just ‘Joe Public’ who may be suspected by the cops.

-An Ennio Morricone score (but Bruno Nicolia or Riz Ortalani will do)

-Strange titles often featuring animals or insects in the titles such as ‘Iguana with Tongue Of Fire’, ‘A Lizard in a Womans Skin’, Four Flys on Grey Velvet’, ‘Case of the Scorpion’s Tale’

-Glamorous locations and glamorous women

-Numerous Red herrings
