What was your 1st NASTIE?
What was the 1st Video nastie you ever saw? Was it an Italian gut muncher or a slasher flick?
I was 14-15 years old at my mates house & we watched a double bill of Cannibal holocaust followed by Alien terror. After that family trips to the cinema were a bit dull in comparison! In case you were wondering it was 1982 could have been 83 not sure. |
Jaws-1975 or maybe 1976
Mom kept putting her hand over my eyes to shield me from the horror of it all. |
Yeah i saw jaws at an early age but i meant what was your 1st gut muncher-
zombi cannibal ferox driller killer. films of that calibre maximum glop minimum plot. |
I'm guessing this is a British thing, or is this something us bloody colonials should understand, too?
|
In the early days of video in England mid 80s the bbfc ( british board film clasification) drew up a list of films they decided were likely to cause the down fall of society as we know it. They then banned these films the term video nasty was born. Media out cry did nt help matters " boy kills cat/dog/mouse because hes watched zombi"
most of these films were italian gut munchers: zombi, cannibal holocaust, also exploitation stuff like ss experiment camp, i spit on your grave. But soon no film was safe, evil dead was banned, exorcist & dawn of the dead withdrawn as well. Most of the films i mentioned you can now buy in the uk, but some are still heavily censored. |
oh yeah. I remember that from the Evil Dead DVD.
I guess mine would be The Evil Dead |
at a guess, I'd say zombie flesheaters or some other early zombie film.
|
Last House on the Left.
|
I woldnt really call it a nasty, but that censor board did....so The Exorcist
|
I guess since I didn't start really watching the non-mainstream shit until a couple years ago, I'd have to say it was Cannibal Holocaust. Although I saw most of the other movies you mentioned (DotD, Evil Dead, Excorcist) long before I saw CH, CH was the first movie that turned my stomach. Fuckin' brutal...

shit boys have been doing that since time begun |
According to the Daily Mail, Any kind of crime wave is due to some kind of media, film,tv,or video games. The latest to upset our moral guardians was a rather shit video game called manhunt. some guy killed his mate with a hammer so the tabloids blame it on this crap video game- which then goes on to sell really well despite it being a load of shite.
The joke is this guy had never even played the game-the guy who was murdered played it. The police told the media this but they decided to ignore it no doubt to make the story better. |

Yeah, in America it's a different thing, because there was no "video nasty" controversy at the time, at least not over horror films per se. In the early 80's we were all upset over the potential harm that violent cartoons would do to us. And towards the mid-80's, the amount of violence featured in PG-rated films gave birth to the PG-13 rating.
Back when video stores were a fairly new thing, I seem to remember that most stores didn't give a flying handshake who was renting what, no matter the rating, etc. And as a result it was pretty easy for a teenager like myself to see "Zombie Flesheaters" or "Dawn of the Dead" or whatever. When "Dawn of the Dead" was in its theatrical rerelease, however (it played at art houses in 1982), I remember noticing that some theatres were pretty strict about not letting kids in ("no one under 17 admitted"). I remember this well because I had trouble getting in to see the thing at first! And I wanted to see it pretty badly, because it had such a reputation. Finally I found a theatre that would let me in, and the fun began. I walked in 20 minutes or so into the picture, and saw the helicopter zombie get the top of his noggin sliced off. I still remember the smell of the popcorn. Oh, those were the days! What a wonderful time that was. (Wax nostalgic here.) ------------------------------------- As a side note, I love the British radio spots for "Zombie Flesheaters" (aka "Zombi 2" aka "Zombie"). "Zombie Flesheaters. ZOMBIE FLESHEATERS! ZOMBIE! FLESH! EATERS!" |
does The Shining count?

If anyones interested theres a really good site about the video nasties & censorship in the uk in the 80s. It lists all the titles that were banned & other trivia. And im not pimping my own site i've got nothing to do with it.

Probably a grimy print of Nightmares in a Damaged Brain - from the opening "head-in-the-bed" thru the sleazy peep show scene to the "icepick-in-the-back" bit, this is a raw and dirty film and no mistake.
All UK releases (including the pre-VRA) are cut. |
Never saw that one although i have heard of it. used to bunk off school & go around my mates house to watch nasties. Video shop used to let us have anything even porn, that is until he was prosecuted & shut down.
I don t think watching the nasties scarred me mentally......but PRETTY PEACHES thats a different story lmao |
Damn The Man!

Thanks for the link to my site 'Ichi'!
I honestly can't remember what my first was. "Nightmare in a Damaged Brain" has the dubious honour of being the only 'Nasty' title to land it's video distributor in jail! Despite, as mentioned above, it was a slightly trimmed print (All version under "Damaged Brain" are cut...the uncut prints are known as "Nightmare"). Lots has changed in the years since the 'Nasties'. Many of the once banned titles are now uncut. Some are still cut and banned of course, but it's better than it was. |
My 1st nastie.. The squigglies on channel 99 :(

I remember reading about this, He was the guy who advertised his film he had a fake brain in a glass jar. Fucking outrageous really that he was jailed, do you know how long his sentence was and how long did he serve? |

I remember watching last house on the left at a mates house.
His mum gets in from work just as were at the "PISS YOUR PANTIES" scene. His mum went berserk & kicked us all out of her house & banned us from seeing her son lmao-he picked the video. |

The guy sentenced over "Damaged Brain" got 18 months but 12 were suspended so he had to serve 6.
Truly outstanding in it's craziness. |
