i read it, but it has been about 15 years ago. i thought it was an excellent story. neither of the movie versions have done it justice, IMO.

The shining is probably my favorite horror movie, but I've never seen the book for sale anywhere. I suppose amazon would have it though.

My uncle told my it was way different from the movie though, like it's more about Jack's alcoholism and less about the supernatural, is that true?

PurplePoison89 12-10-2004 08:25 AM

no not really!

The movie IS different from the book (particularly the second half), but rest assured that the supernatural is still very much present.

I thought it was good but not one of King's best. And Kubrick's version is definitely first class !

Although they were incredibly different, I loved both the book and the Kubric movie, Ive yet to see the miniseries, but Im not in any rush too, lol.

your uncle has it backwards ..
The book definately dealt more with the supernatural but Kubricks film version portrayed Jack as going mad. Everything was in his mind.

that caused a huge problem between kubrick and king - and eventually king did his own made for TV version.

I seen the movie haven't read the book. I should read it though, since my mom has every singal book every made by Stepehen king, even the ones he worte under a diffferent names.

Not as good as the Dark Tower series.

alkytrio666 12-30-2004 08:48 AM

The Shining is a masterpiece, and although Kubrick's version of the movie is my favorite horror movie, it isnt even close to how King intended based on the book. Also, what the hell are you talking about, you never see it for sale?! Look in a fucking book store, everytime I go to get a new King book I see 10+ Shining's there.

Katelan1089 01-23-2005 11:24 AM

wow i know this is delayed but that was an awesome book!!!!!!!!

blackknight 06-27-2005 02:10 PM

The book is excellent. The Kubrick version of the book seemed to imply that Jack Torrance was already batshit before he went to the Overlook. The book made his insanity as a more ongoing process.
The tv remake was ok. I did like that the remake went into the background of both Jack and the Overlook that Kubrick seemed to ignore.
