the grudge

has anybody seen the grudge i just wanted to know if its worth a watch

MrShape 08-05-2004 10:19 AM

Seen all four of 'em. They're interesting. Each one tells five stories of how people meet their end at the hands of the curse. They're well made, but they don't really seem to go anywhere. I found myself enjoying them, but most people probably won't.

deadandgone 08-05-2004 10:23 AM

thanks man im gonna go watch them now

TrueFan 08-05-2004 10:27 AM

Ju-on (The Grudge) and Ju-on 2, which is not really a sequal, but rather a remake with a bigger budget. The rest, I hear get weaker. Pang brothers do great work when givien a bigger budget

deadandgone 08-05-2004 01:19 PM

thanks alot

komi 08-06-2004 02:47 AM

tachii 08-06-2004 01:43 PM

been wanting to watch don't know if its worth it though still might give it a chance

Vleeshaak 08-07-2004 05:49 AM

Ju-On:the Grudge is a must see for those who like Asian Horror. It`s not all that original, but it`s creepy and scary.

deadandgone 08-07-2004 06:27 AM

sam raimi said it was the scariest movie hes ever seen thats gotta count for something

Vodstok 11-15-2004 05:51 AM

Grudge....

There was another one on this, but i dont care, it was too fucking long.....

Well, i saw the Grudge this weekend.....and it exemplifies why i stopped watching anime movies a long time ago...

In many cases, japanese writing in films is disjointed, nonlinear, and confusing. Details are left out, and no clues are given to fill them in, they are simply left to accept as truth.

Spolier, dont go further...

A stalker who gets killed by her husband is hardly what i would have expected, and it was quite a letdown. And why did LoneStar kill himself? Granted, i would be a bit screwed up if some nutcase and her kid got killed by her husband because she was stalking me, but that us hardly a cause for suicide.

plenty of the mive tried really hard to be scary, but just didnt pull it off..... Very very much of the "scary" stuff was stolen directly from Ringu. (there was even a scene stolen from Demon Knight, which was the freakiest thing in the movie). And why did the ghost burp? Eeek! it has gas! I guess farting was just a little too funny, but loud, long belches are terrifying

A coworker saw this before me and said it was pretty good and his wife was scared tyhrough the whole thing... Maybe i am too jaded by the other movies i have seen, and many i watch on a regular basis, but i thought the grudge sucked.

And what the hell is the point of the title? The Ring was a bit esoteric, but it made sense...who has a grudge? a grudge against what? if it was a grudge, it is awfully indiscrimiate. grudges are usually towards a particular person or group. And dont say "the living", because that would make it even morelame....

tachii 11-15-2004 06:13 AM

i fell asleep in the theatre, and that throat click thing was annoying, wasn't it? fucking movie made no sence!!! i wan't my 2.50 back goddammit!!!

it is rather hard to be properly scared in this day and age. i've been watching horror ever since i could see and maybe i've been desensitized, but hollywood really should try harder.

Vodstok 11-15-2004 06:18 AM

The new dawn of the dead had me sweating bullets. The ring scared the hell out of me. hell, i still get jumpy if i watch the exorcist alone. This movie was just a flop.

They need to let those of us that are desnsitized make what scares US, then we will absolutely terrify the regular folks.

MichaelMyers 11-15-2004 11:47 AM

A friend was just telling me that a girl at his workplace saw this movie and keeps having nightmares, and can't even be alone outside in case something "gets" her. Man, people are so soft nowadays. :D

tachii 11-17-2004 09:28 AM

no shit

urgeok 11-17-2004 09:31 AM

a review i heard aknowledged the dreamy non linear feel of the film but he said that was very much a part of Japanese horror cinema and he praised it anyway.

I'm going to have to watch the origional.

tachii 11-17-2004 09:35 AM

that thought never occurred to me
perhaps i shall follow suit

Interesting concept... nonlinear worked well in pulp-fiction. it also worked well in The Highlander. (well, semi nonlinea).

In the grudges case... i believe that is what we writers call "poor writing"

"What the hell, transition whenever you feel like it and dont tie it together well. People will get it anyway. And if they dont, they just arent very sophisticated...."

the japanese in many cases also are like a lot of italian horror which is heavy into style over substance.
Sometimes I can deal with it.. others ... sure it can be tedious.
At least i guess i can see why others wouldnt like it.

Vodstok 11-17-2004 10:16 AM

That would explain a lot.. I cant stand style over substance (okay, so i liked independance day, sue me). I always believed that people who use this technique should leave the writing to someone else.

urgeok 11-17-2004 10:34 AM

i can be tolerant sometimes.
I find that the Hong Kong filmmakers are the worst.
I mean John Woo is a fun director but people like his early films because they are funny, old fashioned, and dont translate well to english, not because they are brilliant .. technically or otherwise.
everything is slo-mo ...ultra cliche ...
It just doesnt work as well for them ..

I think the italians get away with it because of the huge emphasis they put in the music and camerawork ..
The Japanese horror films are still somewhat musically challanged .. they rely on that cheap keyboard sound to much .. like a Richard Band production ..

anyway i still need to see the damn thing to make up my own mind. if i ever get a chance..

Vodstok 11-17-2004 11:07 AM

On the note of italian films, suspiria was a huge letdown. it was exactly what i expected of an italian horror flick, wich isnt a good thing in my book.

Vodstok 11-17-2004 11:51 AM

Ilove Mcdonald's double cheeseburgers, and consider a dinner at taco bell "special".... So to each his own.

i'm dead serious when i say I've had at least 8 guys say that they're bringing their wives over to see the basement to make themselves look good ..

Amalthea 11-18-2004 12:47 PM

I ainīt looking forward to the remake.

ShankS 11-18-2004 02:04 PM

you guys should have really watched the original Grudge 1 & 2 first, then you'd probably have had a more enjoyable view.

ok yeah I agree Jap films are kind of strange to start with, but then thats why these films have such a unique following....you either love em or hate em, and if you love em you'll appreciate the style much more.

I liked, and this is probably the first and last time I'll ever say this, the transition from the original Grudge to this remake, and has been done superbly imo....the story was followed well and I think they chose good american 'jap' replacements for the main characters.

The Grudge remake was far better than the Ring remake...even though I should have followed my own advice, since I watched the Ring remake before watching all of the Ring originals.

Vodstok 11-19-2004 04:00 AM

Ugh, i at least liked the Ring. I didnt care for Ringu either, and one of my complaints about the grudge was that it reminded me too much of ringu. Sorry, the scariest thing to me about the grudge was theat the theater i saw it in was smaller than my living room..

jay o2 waster 11-19-2004 05:27 AM

I think that I finally might go and see this tonight
