hannibal/silence of the lambs prequel
I heard on the radio today they are making a prequel of hannibal/silence of the lambs. Aprantly its gonna be about hannibals younger years. before he became the lamest slasher of moviedom. i think its going to be set in the 1940/50's.

after reading harris's Hannibal it became obvious that he believes himself to be a stephen king clone ... the book read like a screenplay ..
Nothing subtle ...all in your face .. where Hannibal is some kind of super anti-hero .. Complete crap in my opinion .... What a difference from Red Dragon which was actually a decent thriller. This is what happens when a writer gets too involved with the hollywood movie making process .. instead of writing a novel they turn to writing a screen friendly treatment- it's like begging... make me into a movie ! I also haven't seen many prequels i liked... so i think this will have a couple of strikes against it before it starts. |
The Phantom Menace ruined prequels for me.
|
thats goddamn exactly it !!!
All it did was prove that once you know the ending ... the road there is hardly that interesting. In every case I've seen it has seemed like a pathetic attempt to make more money .. not like there was a genuine story to tell. Otherwise the origional movie would have started there! those star wars prequels were a complete and utter cash grab. Souless eye candy - just a big toy ad. |

Goddamn, that was well put!!!! |
Allot movie perquilles suck pretty badly in the long run, since you whats going to happen to them, and can predict whats going to happen. Like the Atamvile horror moive the oringal was pretty good, the squell whci was a prequile was dumb, since I knew what was going to happen in the end.

A recent magazine article has announced that the new novel is to be called "Behind The Mask" by Thomas Harris it will be out in 2005 and the movie is to be out a year or so after that, but without Anthony Hopkins. The story starts off with Hannibal around 6 or 7 years old and ends with him in his 20's.
|
and after that there will be one about his parents .. and so on and so on ..

although not technically a "prequel" i think the flashback scenes in godfather 2 (which were practically a movie in themselves) were pretty freakin amazing. only going to show that a prequel is not predestined to suck. i am totally welcome to a "silence" prequel or, while we're on the subject, a freddy, blair witch or chainsaw prequel. sure, they may end up sucking, but they also may end being great. and i think the possibility of something great is worth it. just my oppinion.

that was an exeptional movie .. the 'hannibal' movies however are becoming progressively weaker ... and given most prequels suck as they are usually just made to cash in on a ready made market .. i expect the Hannibal prequel will be the worst of the bunch .. if i end up being wrong .. hey, great ... |
My hopes arent very high.....

Harris writes his books knowing they are going to be films. It's turned him into a shitty writer. |

Reddragon was almost perfectly the book....and harvey clitel and edward did a fantastic job....along with the blind girl (equilibrium chick, i forget her name) And if Harris rights for the movies he must not have paid attention to the end of Hannibal the book, as its no where to BE SEEN in the fucking movie.....thats what ruined hannibal for me, dispite Gary Oldman (who i love) and Hopkin's interaction.... Not the best movies ever, certainly no Seven, but they dont get their due respect....and neither do the books.....all 3 of which i love......black sunday kicked ass too tho, but in a independant way.... |
not being a big fan of Harris's writing i really didnt see a problem with the deviation .. I read Red Dragon when it came out ..I thought it was ok but i enjiyed Manhunter more.
I enjoyed the style .. especially the music and Brian Cox who played Lector as he was probably directed .. to be intelligent - but not some kind of super human. I have no problem suspending my disbelief in a horror film but the Hannibal character became a bloated character in my opinion.. Superhuman strength, superhuman speed, superhuman olfactory glands, super human intelligence, cultured, etc etc .. about as subtle as Dustin Hoffman's Rainman character. Extreme Hollywood overextravegance.... and Harris plays right into that. Manhunter was made with style ... Red Dragon was empty to me .. not one thing in it was memorable ... I saw Manhunter for the 1st time almost 20 years ago and it left a real impression Maybe if you cant seperate book and film it will be more difficult for you but i wasnt hampered with that at all. or maybe its just the old hat .. you love the one you saw first ... |

Manhunter kicked all kinds of ass.Tom Noonan was a truly disturbing psycho. Will Peterson was also great as Will Graham.I hoped that they would choose Ed Norton if they ever remade Manhunter and he was as good as I expected. I didnt care for Fiens though I would have chosen Clancy Brown or Ron Perelman. |

i'd have to disagree with those choices .. they are too well known and too cliched for villians. the origional dollarhyde was great in part because we didnt know him form anything else. Typecasting takes away from a genre film... Its more interesting seeing someone playing against type. Useless but interesting trivia : do you guys know that Clancy Brown provides the voice of Mr Crabs in Spongebob Squarepants ? |
Wasnt Red Dragon a prequel ?...(the same story as Manhunter)
