Romero and the Dead Films

A long time fan of the Dead series .. (and the remakes) I just watched Day of the Dead last night for the 5th or 6th time (I'd been listening to the excellent soundtrack I bought on Ebay and it made me want to watch the film again)

Every time i see it I like it more ..
As a matter of fact, I'm starting to prefer it to - gasp - Dawn of the Dead.
I really like the Jamaican and the Irish guy ... i think their characters are better than the 2 leads in Dawn.
And the evil military guy - is fantastic.

Anyone else feel this way or can nothing beat Dawn for you guys ?

Hate_Breeder 10-27-2004 08:20 AM

Yes i loved Captain Rhodes (Joe Pilato) in this movie. Awesome awesome character.

urgeok 10-27-2004 08:24 AM

this sounds goofy but when he gets shot by Bud ...
this is one of the few performances where someone ACTUALLY acts like they've been shot ...
Instead of doing the 'indiana jones' running around like it was a spitball that hit you.

Always been a huge fan of Day of the Dead - many detractors claim it is too "shouty" and claustrophobic... but these are qualities that make the film work, especially after the shopping-mall setting of Dawn.

Rhodes is plain nasty, and the good guys are all likeable (apart from the noob who cracks up, but at least he loses his guts and gets his arm chopped off to cheer us up) so we really want them to escape at the end.

Dr Frankenstein's nurturing of Bud is always intriguing without descending into farce, and there is still room for one or two comedy moments in the film (the Irish dude is hilarious) without detracting from the terror.

The start is great - those sudden hands through the wall by the calendar are startling, and what about that alligator?

I saw that one a long time ago. I think some of the humans were more repulsive than the zombies. But the little lecture about how we should stop trying to figure out why the dead come back to life and just get back to "making babies" was absurd, smacking of new age anti-intellectual bullshit. Human beings use intelligence to solve problems; that's how we're able to survive. But anyway... those Florida gators would be living large if that ever happened in real life - they'd never run out of food.

Kemal,

I liked that speech ...
To me the guy was saying 'we're being spanked by god' for snooping where we shouldnt .. the advance of technology being our downfall.

Not a new idea but you can certainly see where their heads might be when they've begun to suspect that the world is completely taken over ..

Like the man says ... maybe its better to spark up a couple of fatties on a nice island, and start the human race over ...

Sort of a Walden thing - back to the earth...

I dont have a problem with technology myself but its pretty clear that we're well on our way to destroying the earth after the incredibly short timespan humans have been on the earth.

His point of view is tempting .... relax and smell the roses and all that ...

have you seen the full unedited version ?

JoethePlumber 10-29-2004 12:58 PM

I shall say

In order of quality it goes:

1) Dawn
2)Night
3)Day

After you watch Day you think "not as good as Dawn" but you should brace yourself for obvious things like this. The orginals of TCM and Halloween will never be bettered. NOTLD has a good remake but I still prefer the orginal as I am sure most people would.

While Day is not as well done as Dawn (its a bit saturated with the gore and it is not placed very well I.E the gererals torso rip) it is a good laugh and provides you with that Asshole general (forget his name) who provides a winning personality.

Bub was my favorite character of the trilogy.

FairyKorpes 11-01-2004 05:45 PM

Explain to me in the Tony Todd version the zombies moved at the speed of dim and in Day of the Dead they were like fucking cheetas. Any thing to this that my n00b mind hasn't grasped yet? lol

urgeok 11-01-2004 06:27 PM

fairy, did you get that backwards ?

In Day they were still slow ... they seemed to get some pretty good manual dexterity when they were munching though ..

No, in Night they could just walk right by them and get away. But in Day they were alot quicker, to me lol

The best zombie movie ever

urgeok 11-01-2004 07:13 PM

maybe that was because there was no place for anyone to go in that claustrophobic underground base .
I watched it the other night and they still seemed pretty slow...
there was just a lot of them is a small place.

I really do love that movie :)

Okay first of all, the semi-intelligent zombie in DAY is 'Bub', not 'Bud'. Sorry, just something I noticed that was kinda buggin me, but no big deal.

In my opinion, DAWN is one of the top 2 horror movies ever made (with the original TCM). I really liked NIGHT and DAY, but they aren't even close to DAWN. Night is probably in my top 10 and DAY in my top 15 or 20. All 3 are excellent and make for the most thuroughly awesome franchise in horror. I absoutely can not wait for LAND! It's gonna be fuckin' sweet! I doubt it will be able to top DAWN, but I'm hoping for something right in between DAY and NIGHT in terms of coolness. The gore will probably top DAY though, so I'll be looking forward to that!

If Romero had a larger budget, Day probably would have been the best of the trilogy. One thing I can't get past though is the horrible acting and cheesy music, bring back Goblin :).

urgeok 11-02-2004 06:13 AM

i thought the actors in Day were great ...
The 2 'heavies' bugged me the 1st time .. but i started to think it was appropriate in later viewings ... they were losing their minds.

Something that could be very cool ... Land is filming here in Toronto right now.

I just called to see if i could be an extra ... they took my name and number so I'm crossing my fingers.
Man - what a dream come true that would be ... a zombie extra in a Romero film !

A guy who does a lot of work with horror here in Toronto (teaches a horror fim course, plays in a horror themed band - does radio reviews) just told me that Asia Argento co DJ'd with him at a party on Hallowe'en.

How freaking cool is that ?

Well all i can say is Barbara number 2 kicks ass, i liked the fact they made her so strong willed. But i like Night the best out of all of them.;)

funny thing is that Savini told me he actually hated her 'she-rambo' character ... he didnt want her that way .. i guess it was a higher up decision ..
It was the same girl from Knight Riders - that Romero film that starred Tom Savini .. and a bunch of folks acting out the days of yore ..on motorcycles ..

I think its called Knight Riders .. goddamn it i hate getting old .. i cant remember anything
