Rosemary's Baby?? Somebody please explain...

I just recently watched Rosemary's Baby. My interest was piqued by all of the "Top Horror Movie" lists and various forums where people state it is one of the scariest movies of all-time.

In short, it was long, uneventful and boring (in terms of a horror movie). I must say that it was well acted and written, and I certainly thought it was ahead of its time as far as the subject matter. But to list this on ANYTHING because it was scary or disturbing is just beyond me. In my opinion, there was not a single scary point in that movie.

Please keep in mind that I am not a fan of gore...so I am not solely judging the movie on the lack of effects, etc.

Please list your opinions...

orangestar 10-14-2004 07:05 PM

This was one of the first horror movies that I watched, so I wasnt as desensitized as I am now, but based soley on the fact that you never see the baby makes it very, very creepy.

The devil rape scene is very scary too, but I can see where someone wouldnt think this was a scary movie. Maybe you have to have the right mindset to watch it.

Haphazard 10-14-2004 07:12 PM

orangestar,

I know what you mean about not showing the baby, that was kinda creepy (but cool that they kind of flashed it up on the screen real subtly). It probably would've cheesed up the movie if they would have shown some "ghoulie" lookin' thing.

But, yeah...I definitely didn't think it was a bad movie, I guess I just had preconceived notions that it was gonna be uber-scary based on what I've read.

wufong 10-14-2004 08:09 PM

rosemary baby was, is , and always will be overrated

juanhacko 10-14-2004 10:11 PM

I loved the setting--I decorated my first house from the inspiration

Vodstok 10-15-2004 03:19 AM

I actually disliked it quite a bit. I was very "wtf, i paid MONEY for this?"

Not all of my dislike stemms from the fact that this is roman polanski's movie, but it didnt help its case any....

Steve_Hutchison 10-15-2004 03:45 AM

I'm buying it tonight, they sell it for cheap at Music World. I don't like it tough. It's not scary and slow paced.

Vodstok 10-15-2004 03:48 AM

"My god, what have you done, you maniacs!"

Cool sound-bite, but is till dont like it. :D

orangestar 10-15-2004 04:21 AM

:(

Im the only one that thinks its reputation is well deserved? I love this movie!

zwoti 10-15-2004 04:34 AM

Right, I agree. Rosemary's Baby came out right at the height of the counterculture revolution of the 60's, when change was viewed by many as not necessarily a good thing. The story deals with the idea that nobody is safe, no matter where you are. It brought evil into the mundane world of a New York apartment, and was portrayed as so subtle and isidious that it could invade not only your home, but your children. To many, Rosemary's Baby actually inspired one of the greatest horror films of all time: The Exorcist.

What makes the film even more creepy is that we never really know if the baby is the spawn of Satan, or if the mother was simply under hallucinatory delusions the entire time.

I love films that leave the horrible up to the imaginations of the audience.

I've never seen this movie. Scary children (babies) scare the shit out of me..

To this day I can't go into a cornfield.

Vodstok 10-15-2004 05:41 AM

I really do like Rosemary's Baby--and The Sentinel--although I'd forgotten about the Sentinel until it was mentioned.

FairyKorpes 10-17-2004 08:05 AM

A movie such as this and others like it scare me a hell of alot more then say a Jason or Freddy cause there is this small chance that IT could happen. There is a fear of reality that is worse then any chainsaw freak-o on a screen. (IMO)

Steve_Hutchison 10-17-2004 08:36 AM

I think you have more chances of getting killed in the woods at night than giving birth to a demon. I could be wrong.

FairyKorpes 10-18-2004 07:55 AM

Killed in the woods yes, but by some guy who has been killed and brought back to life 87 times? I think i'll stick with the devil worshipping freaks.

Yeah but you'd be part of history. If I had to get killed and if I could choose my murderer, I'd vote for Jason.

History? so out of all of the 100's of people Jason has killed, how many do you remember? lol. I would want Andrew Divoff to kill me, something about that freakin' voice :o

So your telling me you remembered all of these people? Ok, well from what i remember, they never did name it. She thought about what to name it, but she was told it was dead...then she see's it in the crib and they say it's Satan's child not Guy's. Adrian for some reason comes to mind. But as far as i'm aware they never did name it.

Part 1 huh? Are you going on the presumption that it never showed the person doing the actual killer that some or all were done by Jason or are you just an idiot that forgot Mrs. Vorhees was the killer in part one........just curious?

Steve_Hutchison 10-19-2004 01:17 PM

Mrs Voorhees hears voices. Kill kill kill, Ma Ma Ma! That's Jason taking over her mind.

Haphazard 10-19-2004 01:54 PM

"Adrian for some reason comes to mind. But as far as i'm aware they never did name it."

Yeah, Rosemary herself didn't name it...I think the male neighbor introduced the baby to Rosemary as "Adrian" or "Adrienne."

Something along those lines.

So you're saying subconsciously Jason is still the first killer?

Steve_Hutchison 10-19-2004 02:26 PM

nah.. not really (: I just love to argue.

Oh, well, it was a good argument then. I bought it lol

Steve_Hutchison 10-19-2004 02:55 PM

Well think of it that way, his son comes back to life many times and he possesses people on cue in Jason Goes to Hell. (I just convinced myself)

Am I the only one who remembers a really bad sequel to this film called "Look What's Happened To Rosemarys Baby"?
I think it starred Patty Duke?

phantomstranger 10-19-2004 03:29 PM

So....I have no shame.

Haphazard 10-19-2004 03:40 PM
