so i was having a little debate with my friend today, and given all the sex talk that's been going on in the forum lately, i thought it'd make a good thread.

what is your take on pornography? should it be considered as "art" as some claim it is, or as a form of entertainment like any other, or is it really just prostitution filmed on camera?

I believe that some 'nudity' can be considered "art"...But, poronography is just trash, and I personally am not into it in any of it's forms...

Entertainment IS art. Most porn is no high-brow art, nor very sophisticated. It IS art, it just might not be tasteful, or even GOOD art.

Andrew Blake porn is VERY artistic by the way. Like everything, there is god porn and bad. The vast majority is bad. Most people who watch porn arn't interested in the film par se - and just want to see the "action". This is akin to horror fans who skip to the gore and forget the story around it. Mind you, often time so little effort is put into the story aspect of a pron film, who can blame them?

Most porn then is aimed at one thing above all else - one scene. So it's pretty damn stupid.

i dont think that porn can be called art at all.........i mean of course it is debatable but i really dont think that that kind of stuff is art.....mre like entertainment

i guess in a strange way it CAN be art. really anything can be art depending on how u look at it. but to me its way too phony to be art. most of it anyway.

phony and fake looking, so personally i dont find it interesting at all. like not appealing either, i mean i guess some dudes like the whole barbie doll smothered in make up fake orgasm type of shits. but not me :)

Porn is entertainment pure and simple, if a guy shits on stage and then smears it all over himself somehow it can be called art. I never really found any porn star who had enough brains in their head to put a sentence together besides "Give it to me up the ...." or "oooooooooohhhhhhh thats it right there," *Creeper leaves room and heads to porn collection* just kidding, I really dont think it could be called art in any form.

what about porn as prostitution? could a parallel be established between the two because they both are, very basically, sex in exchange for money.

entertainment. i guess it can be art, but most of the stuff out there is just dumb.

but theres really no disease exchanged with porn as with prostutition. also its like a flat fee for vhs/dvd whereas prostitution can be bargained, whether money or drugs... discrepancy can end in fight :)

so i guess porn is like prostitution, but much safer and less cheaty

I think art is an expresion, whether that be in form of music, painting, writing, performing arts, thought...anything can be art, including pornography.

Ill never understand why so many women on this forum (or anywhere) hate porn. Its quite entertaining when you get used to it, and I dont find it degrading to women.

Now on the subject of it being art....well I think art is in the eye of the beholder. Pron isnt art to me, but it could be to someone.

I think that whether or not something is considered art is not a matter of opinion. Take wine, for example. A fine wine is prepared under a series of intricate processes, each one carefully considered and applied. It is a lengthy and elaborate process that calls for concentration, attention to detail, and appreciation of the quality of the final product. Tasting wine, if you do it right, is an experience of all your senses (except, maybe, hearing). The aroma of the drink, the taste, the color, the texture. Coke, on the other hand, is spewed from a factory machine into bottles. In other words, don't give me a Coke and tell me it's as good as a glass of vintage Merlot.

There is Art (capital "A"), and art. Just because someone creates something, does not make it Art. You have to have talent and produce something complex that appeals to the mental more than the physical. This is an age-old philosophy that goes back to the middle ages, but I believe it still holds true today. If it excites the body more than the mind, it is not art.

Plus, if given the right material, I could produce a porno movie in a single afternoon. And I've never made a film before.

there is no possible way that porn can be degrading to women...........

i definitely dont see how they can say it degrades women. one of the many reasons i want to strangle that bill oreilly character. bitching and complaining at ludicrous for 'degrading' women, when they FLOCK to him, in fuckin HERDS.

not having seen Piss Christ, I can't agree or disagree with you. There are movies that I would call art (segues this into a cheap plug for the upcoming website), but I won't lump all movies together as 'art'. I mean, by some defenition it's art, sure. I'm not sure I can explain it, I just don't like calling stuff art except for a few very rare exceptions

..the "piss christ" as i'm sure you'll recall was a sculpture in the early 90's by an artist i know as serrano.it was a crucifex in a mason jar filled with urine...he was generally lumped in the same group as maplethourp(but back to the subject).i agree with you in that the term "art" is loosely thrown around.music,visual(performance)and fine,and literature...these i reguard as art.and for the record i throughly enjoy porn.;)

well, there's art in the basic, literal sense where anything that would fall under "the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects" is art, but there's the more abstract version of the word that a lot of overly pretentious-types throw around, and it's the latter that I'm hesitant to use.

i wholeheartedly agree....most "performance"art falls into this catagory,at least in my opinion.and i still luv porn!:D
