Important Update

All the entries were submitted within the deadline, and sent off duly to 5 random Battle Royale Judges.

The first entry was submitted by Finalist Posher778 :-

"Scriptwriter- Stanley Kubrick
Director- John Carpenter

Starring- Jack Nicholson, Kevin Spacey, Meryl Streep, Ellen Page. Also with Cillian Murphy (costarring)

"The Downward Spiral of Malevolence"

An innocent young adult (Ellen Page), is called by Satan himself (Jack Nicholson) to aid in the destruction of humanity. Armed with a legion of demons, she must kill all that she loved (along with the rest of the world) in order to keep her soul. The film follows her descent into wickedness as she slays her mother (Streep), the pastor who tried to save her (Spacey), and her step brother (Murphy), then proceeds to become the devil's slave, doing whatever he commands.

Finale- The film ends a few years later, and Ellen has succeeded in destroying the world. However, Satan laughs in her face as he vanishes into the air, leaving her alone, isolated, the last person alive on the planet, to live alone with the guilt and hopelessness she created for herself.
"

This is what the esteemed Judge had to say in his verdict :-

"I have read your entry and graded it. My comments may seem subjective or somewhat arbitrary to you. I have considered them carefully. My judgement is final.

Pros-
Good Director- Carpenter would make the most of this story. +1
Good Cast- Nicholson, having played the devil before, is a natural. Kevin Spacey & Meryl Streep would both bring some well needed humanity to the story. +2
Plenty of epic action- +1
Possibility of some interesting demon characters. +1
She gets punished in the end +1

Cons-
Kubrick never wrote a script he didn't direct. Even with unlimited funds, he wouldn't do it. -1
The heroine's motivation is essentially selfish- she's only fighting for her own soul. This makes her an unsympathetic character. If there was a goal outside her own benefit it would make her more sympathetic. -1
Why does Satan call on HER to destroy humanity? This should be stated. If there is no reason, that should be stated. -1
The title is rather generic. It does relate to the story but it doesn't really grab the attention. -1

I started with a base of 5 as an "average" film. I added a point for every pro and subtracted a point for every con, ending with a final score of 7/10.

An above average film but not the greatest horror film ever made. It would do well with the 13-25 age demographic. It would also probably spawn a couple of sequels, each of them worse than the original.

A competent and somewhat inventive effort.

No punishment.
"

Congratulations Posher778!

You win 7 points (1 HP) and a six-shooter with 6 bullets for that very good effort! (as a normal reward)

urgeok2 05-26-2008 09:45 AM

you guys realize that Rod Usher is going to steal the best ones and sell them as his own right ?

_____V_____ 05-26-2008 09:45 AM

The second entry came from Finalist Psycom5K :-

"Micheal Caine
Gene Hackman
Jack Nicholson
Anthony Hopkins

Writer: James Gunn (mainly because of his work in the dawn of the dead remake)

Directer: George Romero of course (its a zombie movie)

Title: Sea of the Dead

Scenario: Four old friends who teach at various colleges around the country, decide to take a yaught to sea for a couple of weeks. WHen they get back they find something is wrong. The dead have returned to life and have taken over. After rescuing survivors and getting the story, which holds no exlanation why this happened, they find out there is an island that has been reported to be free of zombies, where other survivors have been fleeing to. The only problem is, they need fuel and supplies if they are ever going to make it to the island. Also later on in the story, they come across an oil rig, that is filled with zombies, showing them, that there is a possibility that the island, may not be zombie free at all, and they may be going to their deaths.
"

This is what the esteemed Judge had to say in the verdict :-

"I give him a 5 - the story didn't make me want to see the movie. No punishment, but no reward, either."

Congratulations Psycom5K!

You win 5 points (1 HP)! (no reward has been given by the Judge, and also you scored a very basic at-par score, sorry)

If one of them didn't pick Rod as their scriptwriter they really missed an obvious opportunity.

Do we get to find out who judged which Pitch?

Freak 05-26-2008 11:52 AM

I'm kinda glad I'm out of this now.I would be really horrible at this.

Zero 05-26-2008 12:33 PM

my pitch was Gryphon III - Gryphon Takes Manhattan! It also stars Jason and Fozzy Bear!

Psycom5k 05-26-2008 01:02 PM

Geeze I'm getting shot down left and right lately.

Posher778 05-26-2008 02:51 PM

Yeah I knew my title would blow it. I also shouldve known i'd do something about demons right after a church service :P

how about this: Adam Sandler is like, in love with some girl, but then it turns out that the girl is actually a golden retriever, or something.

The third entry came from Finalist Zero :-

1031

A Film by Charles Laughton

Written by Anthony Shaffer

"Synopsis:
College student Cara (Neve Campbell) convinces her French roommate Sylvia (Cecile de France) to accompany her on a visit to her isolated New England village in order to experience a real American Halloween. The girls leave college and drive through winding back roads, through the quaint village of Haddonfield and out to the country home of Cara’s parents. The girls share details of their lives in ‘bonding’ moments, which include Cara admitting that she had a twin sister who died when they were both seniors in high school.

Cara’s parents – Dad played by legendary Henry Fonda and Mom played by Piper Laurie – receive them warmly and begin making preparations for a night of trick or treat. But as the clock strikes 10:31pm, Dad comes into the girls room with an ax.

Act 2 of the film finds Cara and Sylvia fleeing the murderous Dad throughout the farmhouse and farm. A series of cat-and-mouse games ensue as the previously warm and stoic Dad turns into a sadistic stalker. The girls believe they are saved when Mom returns but, in the second twist of the film, Mom is carrying a chainsaw.

Fleeing the suddenly psychotic couple, the girls scramble – in Act 3 – through the woods and dusty roads back to the village of Haddonfield to seek help. But, once they arrive at Haddonfield they find horrific scenes of carnage as families have turned against each other and they find numerous teenage children running in fear from their suddenly murderous parents. Their shock turns to terror when they find that Mom and Dad have tracked them back to Haddonfield and they find themselves temporarily teamed up with other teenage children as they flee the various parents who have turned murderous. As the teens are picked off one by one, Cara and Sylvia find themselves once again alone.

The film’s climactic conclusion takes place in the police station as the girls find that there is no one to help them. As their fate seems sealed, Sylvia discovers the box of car keys and she and Cara make their way to the service garage in the hopes of finding a vehicle to escape. Just as they seem about to escape, Cara strikes Sylvia in the back of the head with a police truncheon and the French girl slumps to the floor as the screen goes black.

Sylvia stirs in the film’s final horrific moments and we find that she is strapped to the dining table at Cara’s home. Cara and her parents smile at the trapped girl as Dad sharpens his butcher knife. Cara tells Sylvia: “Don’t take it personally, I just didn’t have anymore sisters.” As Dad plunges his knife down the screen goes black.

Rationale:

I want this to be an ode to Shirley Jackson’s story “The Lottery,” though I would hope that the script wouldn’t really explain what was going on too explicitly. I also think the number 1031 could play up in interesting ways – the parent’s address is 1031, 1031 on Cara’s license plate, the terror begins at 10:31pm, etc.

I chose Andrew Shaffer because of his strong work on The Wicker Man as well as on Frenzy and even – to some extent Sleuth. I want the script to play up the shift from seemingly quaint village to madhouse.

I chose Charles Laughton because I always thought Night of the Hunter was brilliant and it saddens me that the poor reception of that ‘ahead of its time’ film made him give up his directing vision.

My one ‘stunt casting’ is Henry Fonda as “Dad”. I’m thinking of the middle aged Fonda of Grapes of Wrath. It might seem cheesy but I could really imagine him going from warm and loving father to sadistic psychopath.

Piper Laurie was so good in Carrie that I chose her as the lead female. I think she would be very good at transforming from June Cleaver into psychotic killer.

The two female leads are among my favorite actresses in horror. I think Neve Campbell is incredibly smart and strong and really loved her in the Scream films. I also like the trick it will pull on the audience when they find out she’s been stringing Sylvia along the whole time and the smug look on her face when we find out that she has sacrificed Sylvia to save her own life.

I guess a similar trick is played on viewers with my choice of Cecile de France as Sylvia. Since she played the killer in High Tension, it will be tricky to make her the victim in this film. I also thought she had the right combination of tough but vulnerable in that film (whatever you think of the ending).

I see the tone of this film being as grounded in reality as possible – I’m not looking for something ‘witty’ or ironic. I also like the theme of playing with family values and what we’re willing to sacrifice to keep our ‘normal’ lives.
"

This is what the esteemed Judge had to say in his very short but hard-hitting verdict...

"9/10. Best reward possible."

Woohoo...WAY TO GO, ZERO!!

You score 9 points out of a possible 10 (I grant you TWO HPs for that), and you also win a Grenade Launcher with TWO Grenades for that awesome effort!!

Congrats!

The other two havent turned in their verdicts yet...

Zero 05-26-2008 08:03 PM

gosh thanks - i kind of liked the idea - so somebody tell Rod that he and I can collaborate (of course we'll need shovels to dig up laughton, shaffer and fonda - and boy are they gonna stink!).

Well, you see- it's kind of like life. You don't HAVE to put any effort into it, but those that do, generally get more out of it.

GorePhobia 05-26-2008 11:38 PM

Zero that was the most impressive thing I have read in a long time man.

Very good job. You should seriously try and sell that pitch to someone.

missmacabre 05-27-2008 09:00 AM

also i want a sequel that explains why the parents went nutso... prequel even.

Everything is in place for the sacrifice which will induce hell on earth when the local sherrif (Mickey Rourke) finds Suzies car by the side of the road and decides to drop by the farmhouse with some questions.

"

This is what the esteemed Judge had to say in the verdict...

"I give it a 7. Feels pretty organic. No reward, no punishment."

Congrats Disease! You win 7 points (1 HP), but get no rewards since the esteemed Judge didnt deem you good enough to get any.

1 more verdict remains to be turned in...before we move into The Hunting Season for Outing #2 of Round of 5.

Psycom5k 05-27-2008 09:08 AM

Well At least I wasn't the only one...

Disease 05-27-2008 09:37 AM

O.K, I'm dead, I didn't really consider it the greatest horror film ever, but it could have been.

_____V_____ 05-27-2008 10:14 AM

The fifth and FINAL entry came from FINALIST Despare :-

"Mine aims to be the best creature flick ever with dozens of mutants and monsters chasing down our "hero". Action, gore, and a little bit of humor would fill this surreal and kinetic horror flick.

Temporary Employment

In a slumping economy Jonathan Fowler is searching desperately for a job. After finally landing the lowly position as a maintenance man at Clymer Industries things seem to be looking up for John. That is, until John finds out why he’s being paid so much just to take out the garbage and change a few light bulbs. Clymer Industries turns out to be a veritable warehouse of horror as John discovers that organ harvesting and genetic experiments are just a couple of the atrocities he’s been cleaning up after. What makes things worse, is that John really needs the cash, jobs aren’t easy to find today and his beautiful wife won't put up with an unemployed 'loser". So John goes about his business cleaning up but soon makes the grave mistake of letting what he knows slip in the company of the wrong men. Now John must run from his job, from his bosses and their gruesome “experiments”, and for… his life.

Directed by: David Cronenberg
Written by : Dennis Paoli
Starring: Marguerite Gance as "Juliette Fowler", Peter Lorre as "The Scientist", David Belle as "Johnathon Fowler", and Robert Mitchum as... you'll have to see the movie.
"

This is what the honorable presiding Judge had to say in their verdict...

"For Despare's pitch, I give an 6/10. It sounds like a semi-mindless, gory romp similar to Army of Darkness. I would question his choice of director, Cronenberg, for the job, but like to see a Peter Lorre casting.

No reward, and a small punishment in effect for an extreme lack of depth.
"

Congrats on winning 6 points (1 HP), Despare!

However, the esteemed Judge has decided to give you a small punishment for your lack of depth and foresight in the story, so you will be SHOT once by The Judge's gun...and the shot he chose is Standard!

Which means you have been shot once with 1 bullet, which negates your bonus winning HP. Hence, you end up with neither winning nor losing anything in this stage #2 of Round of 5.

And now, we go into The Hunting Zone, where someone awaits you this time around!

_____V_____ 05-27-2008 10:27 AM
