I think I have just found my newest favorite film. What a blast! One of THE best dark comedies I have seen in years. Highly recommended to anyone who hasn't watched it yet. * * * * |

The 'Burbs is a great black comedy..... Joe Dante's off-beat faux Spielberg style creates a really unique, surreal atmosphere to the whole move that really makes it stand out. So many great performances too.

THE AMITYVILLE CURSE. 1989
This house wasn't even the Amityville house but was in Amityville so I guess that was enough to put Amityville in the title. In a local bar a "poor boy that killed his whole family" was mentioned, so again a very tenuous connection. Five friends spend a few nights in the house to fix it up and hopefully resell it. I'd give it a miss unless you want to see some really hideous...sweaters. |
Goodbye Pork Pie (1981)
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...GL._SY300_.jpg "Guy steals a rental, picks up some guy and a female hitch hiker and stuff happens." Nice aussie road movie. Quote:
It's great in so many ways. All ways actually. Timeless classic! |
Saw THE 'BURBS many years ago and not crazy about, especially that annoying neighbor! Since a lot of you seem to like it, may have to give it another look over.

MURDER BY DECREE (1979). Another Sherlock Holmes VS Jack The Ripper film and really good, we thought, with an excellent cast and pretty good film work for a low budget offering.. Christopher Plummer/James Mason excell as Holmes/Dr. Watson and I would have liked to have seen more pairings of them. Directed with style by Bob Clark (PORKY'S, A CHRISTMAS STORY and the original BLACK CHRISTMAS). ****

My annual Fourth Of July viewing of
'Jaws' (1975) Still a favorite after almost 40 year's. |

FEROCIOUS FEMALE FREEDOM FIGHTERS. 1982
An old Indonesian martial arts/action film is totally re-dubbed with a satirical soundtrack by Troma films. Its cleverly done and laugh out loud funny! |

Day Of The Dead (1985)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...%29_poster.jpg The gore in this film is a huge step up from Dawn of the Dead (1978). Some of Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero's finest special effect make-ups that hold up incredibly well today. The real star of this movie is Sherman Howard who plays the zombie Bub and is arguably the most endearing movie monster since Boris Karloff in Frankenstein. |
Blue Blood (1973)
http://terrortakeaways.files.wordpre...eblueblood.jpg Reading Ollie's bio at the moment, so on a bit of a kick. I think I have this on VHS somewhere but never got a round to watching it. Reed plays the butler of a stately home who has a strange control over the other inhabitants. It reminded me a lot of The Servant (though not as good) with black magic overtones. Not a bad little film. |

6/10 http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/...psa7e7167c.jpg 6/10 , nowhere near as good as the first one! |
THE VELVET VAMPIRE (1971). Strange moody vampire film that, like most early 70's vampire flicks, plays fast and loose with the rules. Not great, but worth a look with some decent acting (and gorgeousity) by Celeste Yarnall. **1/2

Suspiria (1977)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...piriaItaly.jpg Dario Argento's visually stunning tale about an Amercian girl who goes to a German dance school and discovers that it's run by a coven of witches. The brilliant cinematography enhances the creepy atmosphere and the outstanding score compliments the mood perfectly. The special effects are both brutal and highly effective from the cringe worthy use of live maggots to the cliche bat flying in the window. Demons (1985) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...poster1986.jpg After receiving complementary tickets a group of movie goers are trapped in a theater with demons. Ridiculously fun '80s splatter-fest with tons of brutal gore and a kick ass soundtrack. Quote:

Prince of Darkness (1987)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...f_darkness.jpg It's been years since I revisited this. Not my favorite John Carpenter movie but some of the casting is pretty good especially Donald Pleasence and a surprisingly good performance from Alice Cooper. While I find the characters uninteresting the film is able to deliver on the creepy factor. There are some disgusting uses of live insects, a really cool special effect on the canister and a couple solid kills. I think the idea that Satan was an alien is kind of interesting as well. |
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084899/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 Super, super little gem! Paul Winfield is at his best as the wild-animal trainer who takes the white dog (an attack dog trained to kill black people) under him to try and retrain the vicious animal. Several scenes of savage, brutal attacks stand out, which are made all the more horrifying by leaving the gruesome details to the imagination (one of which is inside a church). But the main part of the film is devoted to an outstanding interaction between the dog and Paul Winfield. The ending will leave you misty-eyed, specially if you are an animal lover. Highly recommended to horror and non-horror fans alike. Certainly deserves a lot more recognition than it originally got. * * * * |
Watched Cujo (1981) this AM. Wish they'd re-release it in 3-D!
