I know, right?

Glad I'm not alone here!

Fright Night 1 + 2 (the originals).

First film as good as always. The scenes with Jerry and Charlie are excellent and Malcolm McDowell ruled of course. Enjoyed the sequel despite being way inferior and a least they upgraded the chick from Marcy Darcy.

Moderator Note - A new thread for all the latest horror watches (from 1990 onwards), has been made here: http://www.horror.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63920. Please post in that thread and let's keep this one for the watched films between 1970-1989. Thanks!

Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell (1978)

Enjoyable made for TV nonsense - which the cutest killer canine since Cujo. Directed by the occasionally great Curtis Harrington.

Rocky 3.
I recently got all of these, as I'd only seen parts of the first one and I think near all of the fourth one, before watching Rocky Balboa a few years back.

So we've watched the first three over the last week.

I enjoyed the first one, but I have to say that I found the second one superior.

R3 is a good watch, but somehow seems quite a different direction from the first two, it was interesting to see so much of an "offscreen" character change in the lead. It was hm...ok...not sure I really liked it as much, didn't seem quite as down to earth as the first couple.
A lot of people seem to consider this one, one of the best...so I guess I belong to something of a minority in this regard.

Curse of the Black Widow (1977) :
http://d2oz5j6ef5tbf6.cloudfront.net...lack_widow.jpg

Thought I hadn't seen this before but I had. Very entertaining TV Movie from the great Dan Curtis. Reminded me a lot of a Kolchak episode.

Scream of the Wolf (1974)

http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV..._V1_SX214_.jpg

Another Dan Curtis TV movie - would be pretty run of the mill except for Clint Walker who steals the show as an eccentric, adrenalin junkie hunter.

Ferox13 12-05-2013 02:04 PM

Race with the Devil (1975)
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-obMCJSi6p9..._the_devil.jpg

Excellent 70's Action Horror - think Rosemary's Baby meets The Road Warrior starring the excellent Peter Fonda and Warren Oates. One of my favourites as a kid and to me it still stands up.

Ferox13 12-09-2013 05:05 AM

Executive Action (1973)

http://reasoningconspiracy.files.wor...1020681901.jpg

I can't believe I never heard of this movie until The Projection Booth Podcast covered it. It's an excellent 70's docudrama about the conspiracy to kill Kennedy. It's fast paced and has great use of archive footage - a great alternative to Stone's JFK.

The Long Good Friday (1980)
http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV...0,214,317_.jpg

Flawless, Classic Brit Gangster film with great performances all round. Keep an eye out for an early Pierce Brosnan role (as an IRA hitman). When a film has a character called Razors you know you are onto a winner.

shadyJ 12-11-2013 07:07 AM

I love The Good Long Friday, it reminds me of Miami Vice in style, but it's way better than Miami Vice ever was. One of the best gangster movies of the Eighties.

Tahrgat 12-11-2013 07:18 PM

Not sure if this is considered a classic, but I just watched Critters. Damn I love this movie.

River's Edge (1986)
http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV...286_SX200_.jpg
Great characters. Great acting and fucking rocking sound track plus the creepy Kid from Near Dark. Shudder.

ChronoGrl 12-12-2013 05:30 PM

I've never seen Critters but I've wanted to see it for a while. I lump it in with Ghoulies because I haven't seen that one either... I think Critters might be On Demand...

Just a warning about the original Ghoulies. It is pretty bizarre and boring at the same time. The second is way better in my opinion. On the other hand Critters is very 80s, but in a fun way. I got all 4 Critters films in a 2 disc set at walmart for 5$. Or here is a link to Critters 1 broken down into a few parts.

Thumb resize.

Watched this with my brother and I enjoyed it! Very creepy for sure and I loved the twist.

Cannibal Apocalypse
Review

Tahrgat 12-16-2013 06:34 AM

Just watched Critters 2. If anyone thought that Critters bared a resemblance to the Gremlins then this film is probably why. It is kind of a shame that they changed directors from Stephen Herek to Mick Garris. Overall this was still a fun ride, but all the tension and character development, that made the first film mean something, were drained from this film.

One of my all time favorites. Definitely one of the best films to come out of the 80s.

Hmmm, funny, I never knew they made a film out of this book. I became interested in the book because it was the first book written by Thomas Harris. Of course he is now known for his book series featuring Hannibal Lecter. Thanks for pointing this film out :)

Exterminator 2 (1984)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...rminator_2.jpg

Weak but still enjoyable, sequel to the 1980 classic. Its great to see Ginty fall in love only to have his dancer girl beaten to a pulp and left in a wheel chair. More comic book and less gritty than the original. Also worth checking out if you are a break dancer or work in sanitation (or even just to see bad guy Mario Van Peebles dressed like a member of Cameo).
Makes me wanna see the original again.

::big grin:: yeah I always thought that was awesome. Been awhile since I've seen the original. I really should pick up that Blu-ray from Arrow Video. Only £7.99 on their site at the moment.

urgeok2 12-19-2013 06:28 AM

Ginty was in something recently before his death .. some action film where he was driving something ..

was it the Expendables?

I don't recall him being in that but it's been awhile since I've seen it.

I was suprised at how much TV he directed. l've always liked Warrior of the Lost World too... total trashfest but it's great.

urgeok2 12-19-2013 07:40 AM

I had to look it up - according to IMDB he hasn't been in anything since 2000 .. must have been a look-alike

Just watched a bizarre bit of 70s sleaze called Love Me Deadly. The whole film is available on youtube, if you're so inclined. It's mascategorized on youtube as a movie about Satanism. In fact Satan or the devil are never mentioned in the film, but there is a black robed, red candle carrying cult. They're necrophiliacs! This sick and twisted little drama is one woman's tortured experiences trying to deal with her attraction to dead bodies...

Cheap production, terrible acting, cheesey soundtrack, and the male lead is Carol Burnett's hunky right hand man Lyle Wagonner!

It's all tease and little payoff, though there is one nasty scene where a mortician picks up a male prostitute so he can kill him for his cult, and there are several pair of unaugmented 1970s breasts on display briefly.

I haven't seen this for years but I have an old ex-rental of it. It used to be fave of mine - I remember it having some great 'romantic' music in it.

Oh yah, the soundtrack is atrocious, including several cuts of generic library music and two vocals by someone doing her best Shirley Bassey imitation.

WOW! My first and only experience seeing Robert Ginty acting was in Warrior of the Lost World. I assumed he was a one-off Chuck Norris wannabe. Then I saw him starring in the trailer for Exterminator 2. Man, you learn something new everyday. Now I gotta go watch The Exterminator. In the mean time please enjoy this trailer for Warrior of the Lost World:
