Taped (2012)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...dhdc/Taped.jpg

Set on a common premise where a couple having a hard time on their relationship travels to Buenos Aires, Argentina for a change & to finally confront & resolve their crisis but when they are about to decide for a break-up, they accidentally witness a police crime & 'unintentionally' record the event on the video camera (btw, this isn't a POV or found footage feature), leaving them no choice but to run for their life from a corrupt group of cops.
Though the wife was kinda typically annoying who did few unnecessary & stupid mistakes but the cast overall did a good job. And also as their is actually nothing new in the plot but still this is a nice & well executed Dutch thriller that managed to hook me in to till the end. Recommended.

Btw, just read online that Colombia Pictures already acquired the rights for an American remake!

Watched this thing called Stephen King's Riding the Bullet.

Though a few parts were cheesey, I enjoyed the original plot, and there was some good acting from an excellent cast that included Cliff Robertson and Barbara Hershey. I thought it was a decent film.

Reading about it online, it seems like it's a pretty reviled film, with plenty of comments about "worst movie ever" and such. It's no masterpiece, but I liked its approach. I haven't read the story, so perhaps that helped me enjoy it more.

The Lorax (2012)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ogrl/lorax.jpg

I was dubious about the movie adaptation of this iconic Dr. Seuss book, but decided to check it out anyway against my better judgement. And it was truly awful. Terrible writing (especially the musical numbers) and just lazy filler. The fact of the matter is, this is a children's book that doesn't really need to fill up a whole 90 minutes. And if you DO want to make it last 90 minutes, the filler should be interesting, fun, well-written and beautiful. In fact, the writing was so bad here that I was almost offended; how dumb do they expect the intended audience is? I don't care if it's targeted to children. Don't talk down to them, especially when you're trying to deliver a fairly serious message about environmentalism.

Ugh. Just terrible.

1.75/5.

Lovely Molly (2011)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...vely_molly.jpg

After watching this movie I went online to read a few reviews and it turns out that I'm in the minority here; I actually like it quite a bit. I found it creepy, well-done, and genuinely disturbing.

A lot of the complaints was that it wasn't "original," but as I've said in the past, I don't have an issue with a derivative movie as long as it's well-done. And I thought that Lovely Molly was very well-done. Gretchen Lodge as the titular Molly was completely believable and sympathetic as well as honestly just horrifying as she descends into madness. There are also some odd non-sequitors but they didn't seem to bother me as much as the critics. Also, people seemed to be bothered by some of the purposeful ambiguities, but I'd prefer to draw my own conclusion over a neatly-wrapped resolution. I liked the climactic ending, and thought the epilogue was genuinely creepy.

The few critiques I have is that sometimes the sound was a bit distracting, both music and the high-pitched type of beep you hear when your ears are adjusting. It was also a bit distracting to go from handheld POV shaky cam to third-person POV shaky cam. I have to say, though, that this movie was a head and shoulder above Sánchez's previous solo effort Seventh Moon (which didn't really have relateable characters and even though the camera was third-person it was too damn shaky to see anything at all, seeming more like a cheap trick than actually building tension).

I can understand why people were bothered by it I suppose, but all in all if modern horror evolved and this wound up being the "worst" end of the modern horror spectrum, I'd be a very happy horror viewer.

3.75/5.

"Horror-doc" about alleged child killer on Staten Island. Some suspenseful moments, with creepy footage of old sanitariums and the patients occupying them. Worth renting.

"ParaNorman" (2012)

Plot: IMDB
In the town of Blithe Hollow, Norman Babcock is a boy who can speak to the dead, but no one besides his eccentric new friend, Neil, believes his ability is real. One day, Norman's estranged eccentric uncle tells him of an important annual ritual must he take up to protect the town from an curse cast by a witch it condemned centuries ago. Eventually, Norman decides to cooperate, but things don't go according to plan. Now, a magic storm of the witch threatens Blithe Hollow as the accursed dead rise. Together with unexpected new companions, Norman struggles to save his town, only to discover the horrific truth of the curse. With that insight, Norman must resolve the crisis for good as only he can.

Phantom's Review: Beautifully animated, surprisingly well written and a couple of decent scare scenes. To be honest, my expectations were a bit low but I thoroughly enjoyed this film. A good spoof of horror films with a very good story.

Le Moine aka The Monk (2011)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...dhdc/monk1.jpg

A short adaptation of of Matthew Lewis' Gothic novel of the same name, the film depicts the downfall of Ambrosia, a monk who gradually falls into depravity and sin through devil's tricks. Beautifully shot with a fine Gothic tone all over director Dominik Moll delivers here a decent diabolical drama where renowned French actor Vincent Cassel convincingly fits into the title role. I have seen only one film of this director before (With a Friend like Harry) which was a good-fun Hitchcockian thriller & I loved that but this time The Monk wasn't as much interesting or great as I expected but worth a watch for sure. Moreover, as far I read about the original novel, dealing with a variety of sacrilegious themes, many characters & sub-plots, I think the novel should be better treated in a TV series format where they could brought all the characters & events nicely together which they highly cut & made it short & simple in this adaptation.

i was amazed by the fast ER service. in real life it would take them at least a couple of hours to even get assessed, i'm not talkin about surgery. and, yeah, don't know bout Argentina, but MD giving a pack of pain killers "to go" is something unreal in US.
didn't think that the wife was annoying, she was a quite helpful little bitch actually.

I think that most of my enjoyment of this film was the fact that I'm a former English major who has always been fascinated by the true authorship of Shakespeare's plays (though honestly I never actually took the time to research different theories). What I found interesting was that this tale assumes that Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford was the true Bard and that he wanted his work to be portrayed under a pseudonym so as not to expose his political motives. Also interesting was the concept of plays being blasphemous and treasonous (purposefully) as I think that one of the great purposes of art is to undermine and expose authority.

Where they lost me a bit was in a rather convoluted storyline involving bastards and incest to the point of being a bit too obvious and not really believable. Also it was definitely self-conscious and over-wrought. And we change time periods quite a few times which is disorienting and not successful. Admittedly, though I did like the love story, and understand that these are all nods to Elizabethan times and Shakespearean sub-plots.

Part of me just thinks that it could have been a lot better, if say it had been penned by Thom Stoppard and perhaps directed by Shekhar Kapur. There was a LOT that I liked and the acting was truly superb... There were just parts that I had a hard time suspending my disbelief.

I'm glad I finally saw it, though.

newb 08-29-2012 08:11 PM

The dialogue was corny......the plot was thin.....the acting was not Academy Award material ......but

how could any fan boy [ or girl ] not love seeing these three side by side blasting away bad guys!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...bles-2-008.jpg

throw in a fun cameo by Chuck Norris and JCVD playing a badder than bad guy

if you liked the first....you will love the 2nd.

Boogeymen II: Masters of Horror A Documentary

Dara 08-31-2012 12:45 AM

I watched the remake of Fright night with Colin Farrell.I quite enjoyed it,although it kinda played like an episode of Buffy the vampire slayer..no real depth of characters .
I did enjoyed the range of movement displayed by the vampire after he was staked by the main characters mum. That was aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

I was in and out of the room making dinner as it didnt really hold my attention and was still able to pick up where id left off.
I was more interested in figuring out where id seen the actress that played Amy from...(28 weeks later ).That kept my brain sharp and prevented it from dripping from my ears.

Loved it, it was funny and amusing. No need for dislike. Not to mention a really well made suspense scene in the middle.

Battle Royale- 5/10

I can't give it better than that. I think all the obsessor reviews and quotes from famous directors saying how amazing it is are just publicized junk. I don't hate the movie, it's entertaining, but it's just that... Entertaining. It doesn't teach about oppressive governments, it barely even hints at that. It's just kids fighting, and sometimes over hilariously stupid things. "You slept with my boyfriend!" *stab*. Not to mention the total lack of realism in the fights just kills it for me. Small children shot over and over with an smg who get right back up and talk and move... Blah.

ChronoGrl 08-31-2012 05:31 PM

^^ Try the book, Posh. I think you'll really dig it. Gives a lot more background to the characters and the oppressive government.

Might be had to view out of context, too, especially by a seasoned horror viewer. It still stuns me that it was made in Japan in 2000; might seem passé by American standards, but it was really risqué and controversial, especially in the wake of the book's controversy.

Jack Frost...for all of the simplicity and rather humorous nature of the film, I found some scenes to have a rather sadistic originality to them, if not just being downright comically deviant.

Hellraiser: Inferno (2000)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...erInferno1.jpg

As the fifth installment in the series, not bad as I expected. Though Pinhead got little screen time & the story added nothing new to the franchise or not as gory & violent as earlier Hellraiser films but still as a psychologically twisted horror feature, I kinda liked it. :o

With the undertone of a dark political past of a country, this movie is as good as any other modern, well made Spanish Horror-thrillers, considering its production value, cast, pace & overall making of the film. Even the finely constructed story offers an interesting plot & well developed characters where the 'Past' & 'Present' overlaps time to time through revealing all the horror & mystery quite decently. Thought it was definitely entertaining but as a thriller, I think the film somewhat loses its credibility for its predictable twist about the antagonist & the way they finally exposed the character into the one final tensed & supernatural scenario near the end. Even as a genre fan, I think it'd better if the same story was constructed with less supernatural elements on it, particularly about the bad guy.

Overall, a fine Spanish supernatural thriller, not a bad time waster.
