Since The Matrix came out 5 years before Night Watch, I'm gonna take a guess and say they probably didn't borrow from it.

Well you'd be right there...except that we were talking about Dark City...Soooo...when you get those sexy russian vampires off your mind, you just feel free to go right on ahead and give that another shot ;)

I put Dark City in line with Exorcist III & Frailty. Brilliant movie, but for some reason no one seemed to care. I started working at a movie theater 9 months before Dark City came out. I watched it seven times. I hyped it to everyone who would listen.

Now, this brilliant little gem, along with Exorcist III & Frailty, has been reduced to bargain bin status. It's sad.

Ab-normal Beauty. I liked this Asian movie, but it does start out pretty slow. The lead character becomes obsessed with death after she takes a picture of a woman who was hit by a car. For the biggest part of the movie, she does a lot of taking pictures of dead animals and reading books full of pictures of dead people, and she spazzes out a lot. There's also the requisite "incident" from her past that troubles her. All of that was weird, but it was the last 30 minutes or so that really grabbed my attention. She started getting these strange videotapes that show people being tortured and killed. It turns into a classic "whodunit" of sorts, but there are some pretty intense scenes. Warning: If you are sensitive to scenes of cruelty to animals or women, you might think twice before watching this movie. I didn't think the scenes were any worse than what I've seen in other movies, but I know people who freak out every time an animal or woman gets hurt. I just want to give everyone a fair warning.

Hostel

Let me start by saying that I wasnt really interested in seeing this movie in the first place. It looked pretty dumb, but I thought I should see it just to see what all the fuss was about. That said, now that Ive seen it, I still think it's a dumb movie, and still cant see what the fuss is about.

I had the same problem as alot of people with this movie: It starts out like a bad porno. By the time it becomes an actual horror movie, it had already lost my intrest. The gore was good, the acting was surprisingly decent, but the plot was so mind-numbingly awful that I really couldnt enjoy it much.

Basically, this movie is well made and well acted, but it has such a boring, straightforward plot that it really wasnt all that great.

5/10

PS- I did like the TCM reference near the end.

Before I start yes everyone is entitled to their opinion and what follows is my own.

I'm about sick of people slagging off this film how it starts so slow before it gets to the real horror. For fucks sake do you all need blood and gore in the first 10 minutes of every damn film you watch. Whats wrong with just getting to know characters and a simple plot? Yep the nudity was a little over the top and not at all realistic (well not in my experiance, strange that there were no woman slightly over weight naked), but come on all the classic slashers have tit shots to keep people interested. As for the not much happens, have people forgotten the Blair Witch (not singleling you out Return), I liked the film but really fuck all happens in that all the way through. People go camping and find pebbles and twigs in trees. But it still worked.
Hostel wasn't trying to be the best horror film every made just a bit different from the run of the mill Scream clones, Japanese remakes and classic horror remakes. I personlly found it very entertaining, especially the Wicker Man music whilst they were all shagging, classic. But no it didn't make my top 25 list as it won't have the longevity of other films.

I'd like to add that when I first saw this film, I was disappointed. Not to be confused with dislike; I actually enjoyed it. It was just one of those scenarios that I practically knew everything that was going to happen. If I didn't know about it, it still could have never lived up to my expectations. It gained 1 full point from me after I let it cool off and watched it the second time. It just might do the same next time. I hope so.

I usually dont care if a movie doest get right off to blood and guts. I really enjoyed Wolf Creek, which certanly takes it's sweet time before any horror happens. The difference is that the stuff going on in Wolf Creek was interesting, it made you care to some extent about the characters. This just seemed like somewhere between a bad porno and a typical road trip movie. Even though that period was likely intended for character development, it failed horribly.
