Vertigo

You know what I think? I think everyone who has seen this film only remembers the ending. After a certain turning point near the end of the film, it lives up to it's reputation in every way. Up until then, it's a poorly paced, criminally overrated film.

They call Hitchcock the "Master of Suspence". Sure he has earned the title, and films like Psycho, Frenzy or Rear Window are proof. Well, I dont know what happened but he was sure missing that gift in '58. Most of the film falls flat, and the first hour and a half or so, with a couple rare exceptions, drags on at a snails pace.

The actors were good for the most part. Stewart gives a great performance from beginning to end, while Novak does her best work after the turning point. She seemed to be asleep for most of the first hour and a half. The supporting cast isnt awful, but not nearly as good as I would have expected.

Now, there must be some reason why people hail this as Hitchcock's masterpiece? Of cource there is: The ending. I wont ruin it for any of you who havent forced yourselves to sit through this, but the ending is incredible. A couple good twists followed by a huge shocker, this is what people remember about the film.

This is all-in-all a pretty lackluster film. The dream sequence and the ending are great, as are the lead actors, but everything else seems to fall flat. One of the most overrated films Ive ever seen.

6/10

i think...

Deep Red/Profondo Rosso... Yeah....the extended Anchor Bay version, I forget what it was called ("The Director's Cut" or something like that?), had 3-4 scenes in Italian with English subtitles. And the gore scenes are longer, quite a bit longer. Good god! What a screwed up movie.

Now, to be fair, though, even cut down seriously for an R rating or for TV, it's still a really interesting film, and the Goblin music is really cool. I enjoyed it a lot when I saw it on TV in the 70's (cut to shreds), and when I finally saw the uncut version, I was shocked.

The Toolbox Murders (Remake)

I know I'll be in the minority here, but I actually liked this better than the original. I thought Tobe Hooper did a lot better job setting up the characters & plot than Donnelly did in the original. There was also better gore in this one too & overall I liked the story of this villain better as well.

I actually was pretty much thuroughly entertained by this one, except that it was a bit slow for about the first half hour. All in all though, I really liked it. It's a remake so it'll get marked down a bit for lack of original ideas, but other than that I don't think this film should be stuck with the reputation of being 'another crappy remake' because like I said, I found it more entertaining than the original.

No way - I also loved this movie. It's so unlike any other "new" horror film - unique. It was actually a movie that I started late, and kept watching, rather than get bored and fall asleep (Like I did last night trying to watch "Man Behind the Sun") And the ending was very cool als.

The Omen (remake)

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. No, it's not as good as the original, but I think it would stand on its own if it wasn't a remake. There were a few good scares, and the little kid that they got to play Damien was creepy as all hell. There's something about him that makes me wonder though... If you were a parent, would you not think that there was something a little strange about a five year old who never, ever smiles? That's kind of abnormal.
