I saw "John Carter" last night.
I was SO fucked up when I went...my brother and I had about a 15 minute "don't laugh" session. So SO wasted.
That said it was an entertaining film with some brilliant visuals, and IMO a pretty hot female lead.
It's pretty popcorn, but definitely worth a look for those that like adventure films.

"Paranormal activity 3" (2011)

Plot: IMDB
In 1988, young sisters Katie and Kristi befriend an invisible entity who resides in their home.

Phantom's Review: Entertaining prequel. The plot is basically the same as the first two films, but with a little faster pacing. Some good "BOO" scenes and the actors do a fine job, but this whole documentary style "found footage" type of movie is starting to wear a bit thin for me. Overall, a decent film.

>> The Burning Moon (1997): B+

A low budget German shocker with over the top gore. Though cast & their acting were very amateurish but overall pretty impressive effort. An earlier film from Olaf Ittenbach, looking forward to see his House of Blood & the latest film No Reason very soon.

>> The Grey (2012): C+

>> The Bunny Game (2010): C-

I don't mind grotesque-disturbing films as long as it comes with some interesting premise, story or characters. But hate pointless showcase of torture, gore or nudity in most cases. Here, in The Bunny Game, IMO they just tried to make a 'torture-porn' straightaway. And overall the product came out simply disgusting!

>> ATM (2012): C-

Another Terribly-stupid Movie.

I dug this one. Just a straight up old school action flick... with bikers and Steve Austin fighting Danny Trejo!

Yeah..seen it lately. Bit slow but not bad and oh, that chick was hot.

Fearonsarms 03-14-2012 07:33 AM

Adrift (2009) Far better than I expected it to be. After I got over the hilarity of the situation I was surprised that there was some substance to it. Though the ending was a cop out.

Death Line (1972) Fantastic british horror with claustrophobic atmosphere to die for. Remarkable camera work of it's time with long drawn out shots which showcase the set pieces in all there full glory. Plus a dark humour and awesome performance from Donald Pleasance makes this a must-see.

Night of the Living Dead 3D: Re-Animation (2012)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1879012/

this movie had all the elements to be really good

Jeffrey Combs
Andrew Divoff

set in a mortuary with zombies...some good practical effects and make-up

but it was done in by the script

too bad

Sounds like something I have to seek out. Early 70's stuff was pretty good if I recall correctly.

The Whisperer in Darkness (2011)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...dhdc/WID-1.jpg

Though mostly dialog driven, but this is a beautifully directed, very fine Lovecraft-adaptation by the folks from the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society, who also produced The Call of Cthulhu (2005). This time with sound, but still in black and white; and the finale comes with an action-packed surprise significantly altered from the original source but pretty entertaining.

I'm sure Ferox already checked this out, so recommending it to all other Lovecraft fans of HDC.

Crime d'amour aka Love Crime (2010)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...hdc/LCrime.jpg

A 'plotted murder-mystery' resulting from a Corporate catfight!

>>: B

Special Forces (2011)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...cialForces.jpg

A French War-action flick about a French journalist (Diane Kruger) in Afghanistan who kidnapped by the Taliban & then rescued by the French Special Force.
The way the crazy Taliban fighters are portrayed in the film...they were like simply douchebags! (I'm not sure, may be they are!) They had no war-strategy or the strategy for the heavy gun fights. Instead firing from behind any cover, they just stood up, ran & expose themselves to enemy fire and dropping like flies all over.

Pretty cliched & mediocre effort.

Not 100% sure about the serial inspired action bits but I did enjoy the hell out of it..

The Grey

Much better than I was expecting. Really enjoyed it. Tense, well paced and the cast did the great script justice.

Toadliquor 03-15-2012 05:38 PM

Phase 7: Nice Argentinian infection movie. I had to kind of giggle at the lead characters S.O.D. t-shirt.

Fearonsarms 03-17-2012 05:11 AM

Manhunt/Rovdyr (2008) Ok norweigian thriller with a lot of action involving people being chased through trap infested woods. Pretty gory and reasonable.

The Bloody Judge (1970) Jess Franco film set during the end of the stuart period in england just before William and Mary took to crown. It shows the atrocities committed by the state at the time treating rebels like witches giving them the same torturous treatment. Not bad.

Scream 4
I didn't want to see this. I thought it was going to be an atypical sequel like Scream 2 and 3. And after watching My Soul to Take a few months ago, I didn't want to waste another 90 minutes seeing if Wes Craven still has it. But I relented and I'm glad I did. Good pacing and story. A few good twists, and bit of social commentary thrown in for good measure. There was only one thing I disliked about this movie. Rory Culkin. He's so ugly it's distracting. I had to pause the movie a few times and try to comprehend how weird looking he is, and why anyone what put him in a movie for other people to see.

i really enjoyed this.not usually into new sifi alein shit but this was pretty damn good :)

cheebacheeba 03-17-2012 10:58 PM

Started watching "Stakeland".
I actually quite like it. They haven't gone overboard on the gore and the vampires look great. I also like the "mankind breaking down" threat of erratic humans thrown into the mix as well.
It's a nice looking film, isn't overly complex, but draws you in all the same.
I'd recommend at least a hire.

Definitely give it a try. It's not Nightmare on Elm street or Serpent and the Rainbow, but it isn't Wes's worst effort.

Watched Leprechaun in the Hood. To say it's my favorite Leprechaun movie, isn't really saying much at all. But for a movie that went straight to video, it's pretty good.

the human centipede 2

wow a lot more disturbing than the first one, and omg just pure disgusting. all b&w accept for one scene, and i think it makes it even more creepy.
i still think cannibal holocaust was worse though.

"John Carter" (2012)

Plot: IMDB
Transplanted to Mars, a Civil War vet discovers a lush planet inhabited by 12-foot tall barbarians. Finding himself a prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter a princess who is in desperate need of a savior.

Phantom's Review: Awesome. I loved this movie. Forget all the bad press and negative reviews, this is a fun old fashioned Sci-Fi movie. Good FX and a fun story. It makes me want to go and Re-Read all the novels again

Demons Of The Mind (1972)
Experimental horror from hammer that tries a lot of unusual things for hammer in terms of the scope of the storyline. I'll admit the first hour is like watching paint dry with zero characterization but the last half hour where it all fits together is done very well and is genuinely exciting. If you have the patience for it this is a rewarding film.

"The Thing" (2011)

Plot: IMDB

At an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson. While Dr. Halvorson keeps to his research, Kate partners with Sam Carter, a helicopter pilot, to pursue the alien life form.

Phantom's Review: Decent, if totally unneeded, prequel to the John Carpenter classic. The main problem with prequels is you pretty much know how there going to end, unless of course, there set decades or centuries before (like the 3rd "Underworld" movie). This film tries to recreate the paranoid atmosphere the Carpenter film had, and does okay. Decent FX and acting make this an enjoyable time waster, but if you want a really good monster movie, watch the 1982 John Carpenter film, that's a modern era classic.
