Ah, the found footage films. Low-key, down to earth, common and modest stuff make them more believable. But when you take them to the big-budget arena, you need to be on your toes to make it click.

I liked the premise of Apollo 18. It could have been more believable if there was something on the lines of Paranormal Activity in this (which I was sorta looking for, from the beginning). But as the story progressed and I started to see the reasons of this film being a sci-fi horror, I had the distinct feeling that this should have been the fodder for a commercial venture, instead of a found footage film. The latter half was novel (at least the makers were thinking of something different), and it made you feel that there were too many things happening at once. Still, the director manages to keep things taut, and you will find yourself biting your nails at least once, if not more.

The atmosphere created by the lighting and the bleak, silent surface of the moon was quite excellent, and the 3 principal actors contributed a lot to it as well. The script was good, although the pace was a bit slow in the first 20-25 minutes. The effects were okay, and coupled together with the multiple camera angles, added a lot of show to the proceedings. All in all, a pretty decent entertainer if you want to enjoy the film for what it is. If you are one of those geeky brainiacs who will look for reasons behind the reveal, you better stay away from this.

The Last Circus (2010)

Well, it's definitely an over-the-top, sweeping absurd epic... I'm just not sure that I care for over-the-top, sweeping, absurd epics.

I thought that the movie definitely started strong, and I really liked the dark absurdest humor... But it lost me about half way through and by the time we reached the fantastically epic finale, I just wasn't into it.

Sorry, J.

I bet a lot of people on here will enjoy it, but it wasn't really for me. Well-made and acted, but felt a bit long.

Haha, no worries. Honestly, I'm with you on the finale. Even for being an over-the-top, sweeping, absurd epic, the ending was too much. Especially CGI-wise. Really deflated the finale for me. I mean, I still really liked the movie, but that would be my big complaint. Sorry you didn't like it. You may still enjoy his other films, though. While they are certainly crazy, I think they might be easier to get into. Dance with the Devil is a sleazy exploitation love-letter. Is it streaming? I thought it was only on DVD.

It was ok. I might have enjoyed it more if I wasn't stuck in a room with someone smoking.

XMen First Class (2011)
Thanks elvis this was excellent escapist viewing and I was overjoyed to see Banshee make one of the films. Much better than the last two. At first I wasn't sure about the cold war setting but I see this was necessary for the epic finale. A very fun filled film.

The Bloodstained Butterfly (1971)
Been a while since I saw a giallo so had to see this. What's most striking about this film is that it isn't the death scenes which are the best it's actually the sparse lurid scenes. It's worth watching for them and like all good gialli it does surprise you. Really for fans of the genre unfortunately not solid enough to introduce people to it.

Fearonsarms 01-03-2012 06:07 AM

The Reflecting Skin (1990) Intriguing and mysterious masterpiece directed by Phillip Ridley (The Passion Of Darkly Noon, Heartless). Though I still prefer Heartless I strongly recommend this as well. It's one of those rare gems that stands the test of time even though it is a period piece of unspecified date. Stunning performances from everyone, beautiful cinematographer that purposefully masters the setting of rural life. Very much a film open to interpretation but there is enough on the canvas to fully impress the viewer. Watch with an open mind and open a treasure of mystique :)

The Man from Nowhere: Awesome Korean Action movie. Imagine Tony Scotts Man on Fire being given the Korean action treatment. Everything that Korean cinema does so well is delivered. Its a simple plot and perhaps not as well orchestrated as something like Oldboy but it still has bags of heart. Acting is amazing but subtle while the action scenes are intense and brutal. Pacing is spot on, everything is spot on. Best action film I've seen in the past few years, highely recommend.

War Horse
http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/...R00214317_.jpg

A very emotional, touching story. I found it to be reminiscent to Black Beauty with the horse winding up with a lot of different people although i would say this is better because you don't hear the horses thoughts so its not silly like Black Beauty was. I loved all the different stories. They did a good job with them. I'm glad to see Spielberg hasn't lost his touch.

Bit of a different take on the adbuction movie genre. Pretty decent film.

Psych9.

Just horrible. It's not a horror movie at all. I saw some notable actors and thought I would give it a try. Cary Elwes & Michael Biehn must have been just picking up checks for this one. The twist & ending was unbelievable. Also, if anyone remembers the old board game movie Clue. The actress who played the French maid, at least I thought she was French when I originally watched Clue. She's in Psych9. Sadly, she doesn't look like a French maid anymore. I had to check to make sure it was the same actress. Avoid this movie at all costs.

Safe in Hell (1931)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

Just picked this up through Warner Brother's archive series. Despite them fucking up The Devils release, bless them for recovering forgotten films like this one.
This is a remarkable pre-Code gem. Featuring a rugged cast of characters, and an amazing, shining performance by Dorothy Mackaill, Safe in Hell is almost whimsical, but ultimately anchored by brooding and intense undercurrents, and paced with increasing tension. The last act, then, is a heart-breaking gut-punch. Highly recommended.

The Innkeepers (2011/2012)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...nnkeepers2.jpg

Like House of the Devil, Ti West's this new spook-fest takes its time to build up the characters & suspense. The story is pretty simple set in a beautiful premise...an old, haunted hotel. The shock factors is kinda low in here which may not satisfy some viewers and with white & fade eyes the main ghost looks kinda silly sometime. But the thing is it's a straight forward ghost story with a little background info and what really interesting is how nicely Mr. West still managed to deliver an effective spooky tale through the doors, rooms & passageways of Yankee Pedlar Inn.
Mr. West shows his craftsmanship as a promising director for genre films another time here by efficiently handling two major technical aspects in the film...the direction and the background scores & sound. The neat camera works & sound mixing beautifully contributed to create & maintain an unease & eerie atmosphere in every corner of the Inn (somewhat like The Shinning) throughout the film and that's the main strength of the film, IMO.

My suggestion: This isn't a horror film that you should watch with your friends or family. To feel & experience the real gem of The Innkeepers, you need to watch it alone in a dark room at night;) (like I did!:D).

I wasnt sure how well Kevin Smith could make a movie that wasn't his usual stoner comedy, but it seems he absolutely nailed it. It had a fair few more subtle jokes in it towards the end, but other than that it was fairly gritty with a lot of decent action and gore.

HIGHLY recommended.

Straker 01-05-2012 07:17 AM

Eagle Vs Shark: Quirky, romcom starring one of the dudes out of Flight of the Conchord. Plenty of laughs, good characters and solid acting from the main cast. While Jemaine Clement (FotC dude) provides most of the comedy, its Loren Horsley who really drives the movie, her peformance is quality and the relationships she has with the central characters are what really makes this movie work.

Hugo (3D)

Really a pretty good movie and very moving despite the fact that a family film by Martin Scorsese seems odd.

But at least we may have some people who are interested in Georges Melies.

Apollo 18 (2011)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...lo18cartel.jpg

I agree with V - This was really well-done and definitely a good addition to the found footage cannon. Geeks who love space, the moon landing, and always wanted to be an astronaut will especially adore this film. ;) I liked how they created a realistic claustrophobic atmosphere. I also like the production value and how "old" the film felt. Great shots of them on the moon as well.

My issues are both personal and also nit-picky. From a personal side, I wish I hadn't read too many reviews (my fault here) because I pretty much made up my mind before seeing the movie that I'd enjoy it, so I feel like my experience was a bit flat (I kept just waiting for the monsters). From the nit-picky side, I don't think you can really run on the moon... Plus I'm not sure that we'd have that level of sound effects. Also, I thought the alien to ultimately be silly and a bit disappointing (though Rue Morgue's review did prepare me for this).

All-in-all, it was a fun watch and I really really appreciate its style, but the scares were a lacking.

3/5.

I kept on wanting to sing out ROCK MONSTER (to the tune of the B 52's "Rock Lobster") every time a rock rattled

Though I do appreciate the line in the end implying that we've handed out these little monsters to foreign dignitaries - that was pretty amusing...

"The Ride To Hangman's Tree" (1967)
-Jack Lord

Plot: IMDB
Three young outlaws try to stay together and keep one step ahead of the law.

Phantom's Review: Likable, light hearted western adventure. A good (and very recognizable) cast intentionally pull out all of the western cliche's. and have fun doing it. Very enjoyable.

I feel like they were trying to make an original creative movie but to me it ended up feeling more like two separate generic films. All the different twists really fell flat for me and were really obvious. Also, despite the great cast, the acting really wasnt that good.

Have any of you guys seen it?

Absolutely excellent flick. I loved it and highly recommend it.

Zatoichi, the one they did a few years ago.
Haven't seen any of the older stuff to have featured this character, though I was quite surprised that near 30 films and a tv series came out.
Hm, this one was ok...it was pretty strange in the presentation...though it was interesting and unusual and the story it told of the characters involved was done quite well.
I quite liked the music in this one too.

Henri-Georges Clouzot's Les Diabolique.

I've been going through a few French films at the minute, mostly by chance. In the last couple of weeks I've watched Les Enfants Du Paradis by Marcel Carne, Le Dernier Combat by Luc Besson and now this.

It's pretty good stuff, but I knew the ending twist (As I imagine most people here do) but the second twist...didn't see that coming.
