Requesting to add Predator (1987)

Straker 05-12-2013 08:16 AM

Jack the Ripper, TVM starring Michael Cain should probably be on the list too, just checked IMDB (wasn't sure of the name) and it has it listed as a crime drama.

Giganticface 05-12-2013 09:34 AM

Wow, this is going to be heartbreaking, some of the movies that won't make the 20-item cut.

Thanks. IMDB hasn't categorised it even as a thriller. Glaring overlook on my part.

roshiq 05-12-2013 12:49 PM

Trying to make a 'unique' list for 80s, omitted couple of classics
which is easy cause there's lots of brave & amazing movies. Oh, how anyone could not love 80s...what a fun decade!

The Villain 05-12-2013 02:29 PM

I'll back Salem's Lot as well

neverending 05-12-2013 04:43 PM

I see the 80s went for quantity over quality.

Giganticface 05-12-2013 07:32 PM

I'll be the second to back The Sentinel as a great ghost story with some unique visuals moments. I agree with Straker about how successful it is at creating atmosphere. The final scene is a horror classic that is sure to stick with the viewer for a while. Although it's a mainstream film, the touch of sleaze and "little person" ghosts give it a slightly exploitative tone. I have it at #13 on my list for the 70s.

realdealblues 05-13-2013 06:56 AM

My 80's list is in.

With 2 open slots left for the 70's I will back "Salem's Lot" & "Black Christmas"

_____V_____ 05-13-2013 12:17 PM

Compiled Master List of the 70s updated. We now have 19 films finalised for our chosen 20. Still need to finalise ONE more 70s film.

Big thanks to roshiq, neverending, realdealblues and hammerfan for submitting their lists for the 80s. It takes the total tally to 5. I await plenty more submissions, folks!

hammerfan 05-13-2013 12:31 PM

Rabid (1977) (neverending) (seconded by Straker)

Can I back this? Or has it been added?

roshiq 05-13-2013 12:47 PM

Yup...Rabid is a well deserving one, I also like to share my support for it.

You can second the backing. The ones in bold are the finalised ones.

And we have found our 20th chosen one for the 70s, thanks to hammerfan and roshiq.

Keep the entries for the 80s coming, folks!

Giganticface 05-13-2013 06:20 PM

Wow, this is ridiculously hard to choose 20.

It's interesting that originally it was contemplated that ten films per year would be picked.

For these three decades, I've decided to stick with the ten best movies of the decade instead of year by year. Why? Because some years are very poorly represented, or practically not represented at all. Not a lot of movies were being produced at this time, and the medium was still new and experimental.

That makes sense when there are only 79 movies on the Master List for a decade. But when there are 973?! Yikes.

So no one likes the idea of submitting more than 20? (I already know how you feel, neverending!) :) Just throwing it out there.

Straker 05-14-2013 08:29 AM

So far I'm managing to keep my list pretty strong and avoid going down the nostalgia route. If we increased it past 20 my list would probably include movies I loved as a kid but deep down I know are total crap..... Ghoulies would probably make my top 30, so lets just save me some embarrassment and leave it at 20 please.

@ V: should have my list done by the weekend.

_____V_____ 05-16-2013 07:59 AM

Take your time, Straker.

Big thanks to fortunato for submitting his list of choices for the 80s. I expect at least 6-7 more lists before the weekend runs out. Keep sending in those entries, folks!

Giganticface 05-19-2013 07:44 PM

Just submitted my 80s list. Wow, that was tough. Interestingly, for the 80s being the slasher decade, I don't think I had a single true slasher film in the top 20.

As far as being able to keep the list strong past 20 -- I hear ya, Straker -- it's tempting to want to include childhood favorites that aren't all that great. I managed to resist the temptation too, and I think it's still pretty easy to keep the list strong. Just for fun, here's my next 20.

21 Re-Animator (1985)
22 Altered States (1980)
23 Sleepaway Camp (1983)
24 A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
25 Day of the Dead (1985)
26 Christine (1983)
27 Aliens (1986)
28 Halloween II (1981)
29 Prince of Darkness (1987)
30 Cujo (1983)
31 The Watcher in the Woods (1980)
32 Friday the 13th (1980)
33 Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986)
34 My Bloody Valentine (1981)
35 Tetsuo (1989)
36 Pet Sematary (1989)
37 The Changeling (1980)
38 Deranged (1987)
39 Tenebre (1982)
40 Amityville II: The Possession (1982)

neverending 05-19-2013 09:30 PM

Five of those made it in my top 20.

A bunch of those are gonna be in my top 20 easily and a few I would like in there but will probably fall short.... I'm really hoping The Changeling and Altered States are gonna feature in plenty of lists though, the fact that they didn't make your top 20 has be a little worried now. (Less worried about the omission of stuff like NOES and F13 as I think they will be in most peoples lists anyway). Just hoping The Changeling isn't gonna be one of those classics that slips through the cracks.

_____V_____ 05-20-2013 07:54 AM

Thanks to Giganticface for submitting the 7th entry for the 80s. I await to see plenty more before we bring the 90s in.

I share your sentiment... It's hard to imagine certain iconic movies not making the list. Personally, I think there are better movies that ANOES and F13 for that decade, however it would be downright weird if they didn't make the list. I suspect up to half of my top 20 won't make the final cut. It's a double edge sword: either make the list like every other 80s horror list, or include less obvious (and according to my rankings, better) movies on the list, and risk those iconic movies falling off. Ah, the predicament of having such a prolific decade of horror. :)

Kandarian Demon 05-20-2013 01:11 PM

It was really difficult, but I managed to make my list :)

I await plenty more, people! Get to it!

Straker 05-21-2013 08:28 AM

My list is nearly done, its come down to a toss up between Basket Case and Day of the Dead.... I've cut so much trashy cinema, stuff like Bad Taste, Brain Damage, Killer Klowns, Street Trash are all long gone, but I don't think I can let Basket Case go..... I could make it easy on myself and cut The Video Dead, but that's just not happening.

Can I expect a few more entries before the weekend rolls in? Let's see if we can bring in the 90s by then.

If this is still up for debate, I'd like to second, or otherwise support one of these films (in this order). See if anyone wants to endorse any of these:

Magic (1978) - 2 (excellent and scary movie. Anthony Hopkins does an incredible job of acting and ventriloquy)
The Andromeda Strain (1971) - (Truly a great movie. Very sci-fi, subjective on horror genre)
Godzilla Vs the Smog Monster (Gojira tai Hedora) (1971) -- (an artistic gem. The sound, music, costumes/effects, animation sequences and cinematography is fantastic. I always loved the story and creativity too.)
The Night Stalker (1972 TV Movie) -- (Excellent movie, fantastic suspense, completely original take on the vampire genre at the time.)
The Spell (1977 TV Movie) -- (very creepy and well made movie. Introduces the young Helen Hunt)
King Kong (1976) -- (great music and mood, live ape was fantastic, except when it smiled.)
Kingdom of the Spiders (1977) -- (very effective creepy and good movie. The last shot of webs all over the town is incredible.)

I'd like to endorse Salem's Lot, but I only saw part of it. It's two eps, or a 3hr movie.

This was my left over list (not in the top 20):

American Warewolf in London
Twightlight Zone
Funhouse
The Serpent and the Rainbow
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Creepshow 2
the Hitcher
Alterd States

It's not so much about flaws (it's one of my favorites of the decade), it's just that I don't rank it quite so high for a horror list. If it were a sci-fi list, or an action list, or thriller, or maybe even just a "favorites" list, it would be pretty high. But I don't think it's particularly scary or gory, and not really intended to be. It's like Predator, Resident Evil or even The Terminator -- dark and full of creatures, but more of an action format.

The first Alien, on the other hand, is one of my top horror movies of all time, as it follows more of a slasher format, and is also genuinely scary.

Kinda ironic because I'm the one lobbying for movies to be added to the list that don't always make it -- stuff that I think is scary and contributed to the history of horror like A Clockwork Orange and Straw Dogs. For the 90s I'll probably be lobbying for scary thrillers Clean, Shaven and Seul contre tous. I'm sure much milder crime thrillers like Se7en and Silence of the Lambs will be on there.

Ya, I know what you mean. I wouldn't have included Andromeda Strain in my horror list, so I can see how you'd favor more strict horror over Aliens. A Clockwork Orange was fascinating, and quiet an art piece, and certainly has horror elements.

For instance, there's five in this list that got 8 votes, and I bet most folks have an opinion of how they would rank them. The Exorcist is 5th alphabetically, and I (as one vote) would rank it at the top of that list.

I say, I was a bit amused when I saw Eraserhead in the list. I've seen it a few times. It never occurred to me as a horror movie. I saw it as a surreal, subconscious dream movie. It's trippy, dark and disturbing, but in a depressing way, as opposed to horrific. It's at worst sardonic, and at best bare truth. I just never saw it as horror. But I see on the internet, some organizations add the tag of horror.

By the way, Eraserhead premiered at Filmex film festival in Los Angeles, on March 19, 1977. It's a 1977 movie, not 1976.

It won't be a ranked list. All selected films will have equal limelight in their podiums.

The Master List had it as 1977 (http://www.horror.com/forum/showpost...&postcount=249). Roshiq sent his entry and incorrectly marked it as 1976, and so it stayed when I compiled all the entries.

My mistake. Corrected.
