I love the cinimatography in this one, the editing is great too really good stuff. I do think we get a few too many shots of the tall grass but that's minor. What really gets me is how torn I am on the story after watching it a couple times. On the one hand I love the simple story and the way it's executed but on the other hand I think there's so much potential for more in that one. Overall I can't fault the movie for what it wasn't and merely judge it for what it is which is a really good film. 7.5/10

sinistar 03-17-2006 06:08 PM

I saw this too, a few months back, cos I bought it on the net on a whim. Yeah, lots of tall grass shots indeed.. and the sound of it rustling in the wind...

Did you get the Criterion edition? What did you think overall?

sinistar 03-18-2006 09:17 AM

Yup, Criterion versions are always the way to go if they're available.

Overall I thought it was a good movie, not exactly scary, but had some tense and suspenseful moments, like when the girl had to run as fast as she could to get to her bf's hut. The atmosphere of the movie was well thought out and executed. I don't know how many times I'd watch it again tho...

2LDK, the other movie in the Duel Project with Aragami. I really didn't expect to like 2LDK as much as Aragami but i was very surprised with this one. It starts out a little slow but soon the rivalry between these two actresses lead to an all out war with everything from swords to electric chainsaws! The final bit is great as well, really good film in my opinion. A lot of the shots seemed very "Raimi-esque" as well but maybe I'm the only person who thought so.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengance

I thought it was really good and I can't wait for Lady Vengance but it wasn't as good as Oldboy in my opinion. I thought Oldboy was much more focused and better paced.

R Point

This movie ambles along a little too slowly most of the way through, so I ended up pausing and continuing it later a couple times before finishing. A lot of the members of the platoon (more accurately a squad by the number) irked me for flipping out so easily and so soon. I liked the reserved and calculating Lieutenant though. The premise of ghosts getting "innocent" people to kill themselves is a good one, but I must admit, it would have been more satisfying for me if it were evil people, not "green" soldiers just wanting to get back home ASAP, that were lured into off'ing each other.

There's some irony to the fact that the warning engraved on the stone toward the beginning says "those with blood on their hands shall not return" yet it was the ghosts that tricked most of the soldiers to get their "first blood" on their hands in the first place.

kairo ..

i enjoyed it .. lots of creep factor .. diverse characters.
a lot of attention to the type of detail that creates a nice freaky atmosphere.

a refreshing entry (finally) in the j-horror subgenre.

Posher778 03-22-2006 02:48 PM

I watched Ichi the Killer, asian right? I was too busy actling like I was watching cartoons so my dad wouldn't want to watch it with me.... Now that would be a fun experience for mr. LovePGonly.

What's the best version to get?The Director's cut or the standard? And are they both sub-tilted?

Last seen:Ong-Bak,this movie gets better and better everytime I see it.I'd like to see more fighting/action in films sans the tired ass wire-work.

In the UK the best version is either the Tartan 2 disc special edition or the Tartan NTSC single disk edition(this version is the "Theatrical version"
The original Tartan Special Edition(that came in a nice tin) had slight problems with the sutitles, they were hard to see in places and were "burnt on" so you couldn't remove them, mind you can't see why you would want to.
The new special edition(not in a tin) has sorted out the subtitles and has the same 8 minutes extra footage in the film and an alternate ending that the original special edition had.
The single disc version also has the newer clearer subtitles but lacks the 8 mins and it will only play on NTSC compatible players.
Both versions are easily available from places such as www.play.com. I would personally go for the the special edition of it.
Hope that helps.

A very interesting film that is mostly carried by Shinya Tsukamoto's strong acting. It's rare to find a director who is also a talented actor, which is why Tsukamoto's films are always such a pleasure to watch. Takashi Shimizu does a good job in the director's seat, although I don't think that this film is as strong as Ju-On was. Still well worth watching though, despite the somewhat confused narrative. Overall: 7/10

Violent Cop

Takeshi Kitano's directorial debut and I rather liked it. The story was pretty cookie cutter but it was all well done.

He's so nonchelant I love it heh. Just says to the mother he needs to talk to her kid then walks upstairs and beats the crap out of him (well he wasn't TOO bad to him). The ending was well done too with his sis and all... I don't want to spoil it but Beat did a great job in the acting and directing dept. I think. Oh... and the face shot, I was expecting a head shot but that guy (to protect spoilers again) got shot right in the face. Good stuff.

Very gory but the story and acting didn't do it for me.

I think "Beat" did a great job with this one and although some of the acting was suspect I really liked it.
