I think a big part of it is that he is a pretty bad actor... The only people in that movie with any talent were Jake Busy and the great Michael Ironside

That is definately a plus. Kinda like Bruce Campbell. Now ther eis a guy who sacrifices for his fans....

some guys dont forget where they come from and how they got to where they are now ..

that being said - its probably easier to do so when you have a smaller fan base and the fans are 'genre fans'
