Punishment Park (1971)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...ntPark1971.jpg

Few months back while I was looking through some IMDB lists then I first get to know about this film & it made me instantly pretty curious to give it a blind watch as early as possible. At that time I just found the title & the premise very interesting.
Now, after watching it very late last night without knowing much about the background or the content, Peter Watkins' Punishment Park just straight way made me think & feel I was watching something very real...a genuinely horrifying documentary that was probably banned or hidden all these years or people didn't like to talk about it for its shockingly true & appalling subject matter. Therefore, in this regard, this is surely turned out one of the best Shockumentary I have seen so far.

Quote:

Punishment Park is a politically subversive pseudo-documentary giving a voice to the disaffected youth of late sixties/early seventies America. Imagined as the footage of a British news crew it set in a detention camp in an unspecified near-future, detainees gamble their freedom on an attempt to cross the desert (bare footed with no water) whilst being chased down by a squad of heavily armed police and National Guardsmen. In the California desert, arrested dissidents are tried by an emergency tribunal aka kangaroo court and when found guilty (as all are) they're given the choice between unreasonably lengthy imprisonment or take a gamble on three days in the park. Once released into the park, the dissidents - grouped in bunches as numbered 'Corrective Groups' - are given three days to make it 50 miles through the scorching desert to an American flag. That is, if they can evade police capture; they have a two-hour head start.
This is a troubling document from a time when the US seemed about to tip into chaos and the powers that be would have gone to unimaginable lengths to maintain their control. But what gives Punishment Park its quite substantial punch is the absolutely palpable air of paranoia that pass through in every scene. The film flips back and forth between one Corrective Group's miserable odyssey across the desert and the next Group's tribunal hearings. One of the best aspects of the film is those heated tribunal sessions.

"I don't have to call you what you are, you know what you are...better than I do."

According to Wikipedia, Mr. Watkins allowed his cast to mostly speak their minds to each other and the cameras, and that creates a fascinating time capsule from a time & gave birth to a tale of a generation when average citizens actually cared passionately about their country and were willing to go to extreme lengths for those beliefs & doesn't care about the consequences.
Of course, now, some 40 years on, it might be supposed that the political context of Punishment Park is out of date - but Watkins' film still has its relevance, as the US again & again caught in endless foreign conflicts resulted the untold horrors of US detention compounds in Guantanamo Bay, Iraq and Afghanistan. Looking back on history reminds us of the differences and similarities between then and now, but still Punishment Park shows that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Punishment Park is an extraordinary film, very much thought provoking and deeply depressing. A must see for everyone.

Didn't have the time to watch many films in-between, but I watched my 2 staple Halloween horrors on Oct 29th and 31st:

No November movie marathon for me this year.

Last night though:

Out of those, the only ones i've seen are Troll Hunter and Life as we know it. I would give Troll Hunter a score of 10. I loved that movie but i agree with you on your rating of the other. Good to know In Time is good, i was interested in that one. What's submarine?

The last one I saw was Halloween Resurrection - It was pretty good, though other hardcore horror fans may disagree. I'm incredibly biased towards horrors and since I love the Halloween series, I couldn't help but enjoy this. Really, the only Halloween movie I didn't like was Halloween 3 but that's cause it had nothing to do with Michael Myers and the first two movies. That scene where the girl stumbled into Michael's secret room was my favorite part. Aside from the kills, it had some funny moments too, including that banter with Michael Myers and the guy who was impersonating him.

I started watching the Curse of Michael Myers but it was late and I fall asleep. I'm gonna finish it tonight and with that, I'll have completed the trilogy of Halloween films that I bought for $5.

Deep Rising meets The Abyss on an offshore oil rig!

The beginning of the film is so reminiscent of The Abyss that it's uncanny - right down to the small glowing creatures! For the next 30-odd minutes the film goes nowhere before the first death occurs. Many things are left unexplained which makes it a bit confusing (the ridiculous subtitles don't help much either) and when the explanations come, they make your eye roll. Then, the film enters Deep Rising mode (even swapping the power jet ski-boat of Treat Williams/Famke Janssen for a motorbike here). The similarities don't end here - look closely after the climax and you will find an ode to Predator's ending in the whole chopper pickup scene!

A mish-mash of several Hollywood films (the maker is obviously very inspired by all of them) which sadly doesn't click. Only when the monster comes in (a pretty cool looking one - http://popcultureninja.com/wp-conten...-7-monster.png), does the film get any sort of injection to run forward.

Too bad, because they could have done wonderfully well with the setting - an offshore oil rig cut off from the world during a thunderstorm.

Watch if you have any time to spare for a monster film. Skipping it will not be a big deal at all.

I watched Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb again recently for a critical analysis essay I had to write. Honestly, I'd give it 9/10...maybe even 10/10. It's one of my favourite films of all time, brilliant satire and hilarious!

Also, I watched Enter The Void most recently. Crazy, crazy film. Really trippy. I'm not sure how I felt about it though. The unpleasant scenes make it not great to watch whilst high but the trippy scenes almost make being high a prerequisite. I guess I liked it more than I disliked it though so...6 (maybe 7)/10.

The Shrine (2010)

holy crap, it wasn't wholly crap. i'm smashed so idk if i'll type spoilers so here's your

***SPOILER ALERT*** just in case

this movie was... the shit. amazing. had everything i could expect or hope for from a horror film, let alone a MODERN horror film. the fact that one third of the movie was in polish was a huge deal to me. i'm american, and when an american film is dedicated enough to not only produce a good portion of their movie in a 'foreign' language, but to cement that with some bitchin folklore, cool cinemetography and... sub-par(but it's a horror show so who gives a flip) acting, that's an em-effing win. scene that smacked me in the face with awesome (though predictable): first girl in the mist with the statue. also a twister: bad guys are the good guys and good guys are the bad in the end? = baller. this reminded me of everything i like about horror movies and i would highly recommend it to any of you blokes who haven't seen it yet. sry if you watch it because of this review, but i warned you about spoilers yo.

Darbareye Elly aka About Elly (2009)

Quote:

A group of 3 married couples (Sepideh-Amir, Shohreh-Peyman, Nazi-Manoochehr), some with children, visits to a seaside town & stays in a seaside villa for a short break. The only single people in the group are Ahmad who has recently separated from his German wife and Elly who is a nursery teacher to Sepideh's child. Sepideh (who brought Elly in the trip) has organized the whole trip, as well as playing matchmaker for Ahmad and Elly.

After the very first night, in next morning Elly wants to go back home because of her worried mother but Sepideh doesn't let her. Sepideh and Shohreh went shopping, men were playing volleyball and little girls were playing at the beach with Elly while the other kid (Arash) was swimming. After a while, the girls came and reported to their fathers that Arash was missing. The film really takes off just at that point when, in an apparent attempt to rescue the 'missing' kid, Arash from drowning, Elly disappears. Was she drowned too or did she just leave...but why would she do that?...whatever actually happened to Elly?
Iran's official submission to 82nd Academy Award's Foreign Language category in 2010 (though didn't get the final nomination) is a very nicely crafted suspense-drama that interestingly play with its characters, somewhat in a 12 Angry Men fashion where lies, suspicion & speculation slowly starts to digs off some dark sides of each others very human nature.

Highly recommended.

The story was decent that needed to be told in a shorter length. So to portray it in a one & half hour long film the pace turned out pretty slow which killed much of the 'entertainment value' of the film.

Just finished watching "May". Enjoyed it. Not 100% sure about the ending, but guess it's open to interpretation. The opening scene, though, I think, is excellent. I like how the character develops and you can see her slipping further and further into insanity as the film goes on. And you can almost pinpoint the exact moment she finally snaps completely. Not bad at all.

Checked it out due to many saying it was better than The Tribe. With me being a Lost Boys fan I was dissapointed with The Tribe but I did enjoy The Thirst as it mostly had Edgar Frog as the lead but I did wish Alan was in it a little more.

I do hope they decide to do a Series with Edgar and Alan Frog later on
