sleepaway camp
going to watch sleepaway camp 2 and 3, still not ever watched them yet. |
I watched "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" on BBC2 last night.
I liked the film generally but I think some characters were unsure of their actual motivations. I think that the mother character didn't really work. She didn't seem to hold any Nazi values at all despite being the wife of the commandant of what it presumably Auschwitz. That she didn't know of or approve of the extermination was fine, and realistic. That she didn't seem to have any negative feelings towards the Jews seemed to be at odds with what her character should have been. She seemed upset at the labour camp enough before realizing that it was an extermination camp. This would have worked had it been a regular German family, because of course not everyone was fanatically devoted to the regime. She seemed a bit too unsure and clueless for the wife of a commandant and SS man, though. The kids were good and the ending, whilst shocking, was very good and very tastefully done. I think the highlighting of the hypocrisy of the Nazi state was brilliant. The idea of one soldier being sent to the front line for disloyalty for not denouncing his father by the commandant with a disloyal wife - and her calling him out for just that - was very good and a very real part of that culture. Overall, a very good film. I'm just not that keen of kids, they kind of piss me off with their innocence. But hey, maybe I'm just bitter because the cold light of reason hit me pretty early on...a reference to the quote (that I forget exactly) at the beginning of the movie. |

Loft (2008) http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...c/Loft2008.jpg This is a pretty cleverly plotted an excellent Whodunit murder-mystery-thriller from Belgium. Gave it a watch as soon as I read lately that an American remake (starring Karl Urban, James Marsden & Rhona Mitra) is on the way from the same director (Erik Van Looy) of this original. Highly recommended. >>: A The Alzheimer Case aka The Memory of a Killer (2003) http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...yofAKiller.jpg From the same director of ^LOFT^, this time it's an intense crime aka cop thriller with great characterization & that comes with some engaging performance from a good cast of actors. Erik Van Looy's this film is also getting an American remake treatment which is currently in development by Focus Features, Universal Pictures' independent boutique. Highly Recommended. >>: A Very much looking forward to check out more thriller films in coming days from Erik Van Looy. |
Ice Road Terror
Typical SyFy Original Movie. No build up at all. The monster killed someone in the first two minutes and then appeared in the first eight. Still i know what to expect when i watch these movies and it was a lot better then Roadkill, the last SyFy movie i watched, so i enjoyed it. |

"The Return Of Swamp Thing" (1989)
-Dick Durock, Plot: IMDB The Swamp Thing returns to battle the evil Dr. Arcane, who has a new science lab full of creatures transformed by genetic mutation, and chooses Heather Locklear as his new object of affection. Phantom's Review: Remember when comic book movies sucked big time? Well, pop this turkey in your DVD player and relive those glorious days of yesteryear. See truly awful acting (despite a good cast) horrible directing (Jim Wynorski, so what else can you expect) and just general all around crap. Perfect for Bad Movie Night or if you want to torture any friends of yours who happen to be fans of the comic book. |

Malevolence (2004)
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...olence1994.jpg A pretty decent slasher of 00's. Watched it once before & that's almost 5 to 6 years back when I started watching horror films passionately. Liked the 80's popular slasher influenced background music. >>: B Bereavement (2011) http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...vement2011.jpg A decent prequel with a decent cast & some nice cinematography of the location. >>: B |

Wasn't a fan of Statham but he's won me over after The Expendables. Dug Blitz too. |
Pumpkinhead (1988)
Above average 80's horror movie definitely. Really cool creature and the special effects in general are pretty damned cool. Not one of my favourite horrors but certainly worth watching. 7.5/10 Near Dark (1987) Holy shit, this movie is one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. Awesome story and characters and very well directed. Moody, atmospheric and overall just badass. The whole cast is great (particularly Bill Paxton who steals the show in my opinion). This one is easily one of my new fave vampire flicks. 8.5/10 Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) This movie creeps me out hardcore. A superb cast keeps this odd tale grounded in reality and the direction is supremely chilling and well executed. All the elements of a great horror film are there: mood, exciting plot, believable sympathetic characters, and a chilling concept all brought together by a slow methodical build up. One of the classics of the genre. 9/10 |
going to see shark night. When I come back I will say how it was.

very good movie this is. |
Atrocious (2010)
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/.../ATROCIOUS.jpg A old, abandoned & maze like garden...now that's a great & easy setting for a filmmaker to create some effective spooky moments for the audience. And in this case they succeeded 50-50. But that doesn't mean it's an another mediocre POV-horror feature. Instead I'd say this is pretty fun & enjoyable Spanish 'found-footage' film with only 70 minutes length. Liked the twist at the end but that's kinda comes from nowhere; as if it was a last minute decision in order to try & give the audience "something new". >>: B+ Red State (2011) http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...c/RedState.jpg >>: B- |

"Assassination games" 6/10 Nice acting and nice depth in both Damme and Adkins characters. The story was alright as well, but concidering the team-up of the old kick-ass star and the new kick-ass star this movie contained disappointingly little ass kicking. It was more like Dammes "Until death". |

The Whistleblower (2010)
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...stleblower.jpg Inspired by actual events, the film tells the story of Kathryn Bolkovac, an American former police investigator from Nebraska who later signed on with a company called Democra (a pseudonym for the real world DynCorp) that had a security contract with the United Nations. As she begin working as U.N. International Police Force monitor she gradually becomes aware of a wide-scale, child sex-slave and human-trafficking scandal involving officials of U.S. military contractor: Democro Corp (DynCorp) and the United Nations in post-war Bosnia. She risks her job and her own safety to uncover & report that many "peacekeeping" police officers were even paying for prostitutes and participating actively in sex-trafficking. And so soon it turns out a battle against The UN, governments, and private contractors as Democro later fired Kathryn from her job. This is quite a bit of heart wrenching film that shows a part of hidden & ugly face of UN's "peacekeeping" missions which is a bastard child of dirty world politics, IMO. The frustrating thing is after Kathryn's whistleblowing, a number of 'peacekeepers' including private contractors were sent home. None have been prosecuted, as they enjoy immunity from prosecution in Bosnia and even none forced criminal charges in their home countries. The private contractor that fired Kathrun continues business with the US Govt including contracts worth billions in Iraq & Afghanistan. And that just makes me wonder how the UN & those private contractors are now contributing to keep "peace" in those war-ridden countries of the world. Last but not the least, kudos to Mrs. Daniel Craig, for giving a splendid performance as Kathryn Bolkovac; that I hope will get the deserved recognition in coming award seasons. >>: A- The Bang Bang Club (2010) http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...ngBangClub.jpg >>: B+ |

I was very surprised to see Kevin Smith was behind this one. This movie was pretty raw and contained no humor whatsoeever. Guess he has moved on. Good for you Kevin. Good for you. |

"The Last Exorcism" (2010)
Plot: IMDB In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the evangelical Reverend Cotton Marcus was raised by his father to be a preacher. He agrees that the filmmaker Iris Reisen and the cameraman Daniel Moskowitz make a documentary about his life. Cotton tells that when his wife Shanna Marcus had troubles in the delivery of their son Justin, he prioritized the doctor help to God and since then he questions his faith. Further, he tells that exorcisms are frauds but the results are good for the believers because they believe it is true. When Cotton is summoned by the farmer Louis Sweetzer to perform an exorcism in his daughter Nell, Cotton sees the chance to prove to the documentary crew what he has just told. They head to Ivanwood and they have a hostile reception from Louis's son Caleb. Cotton performs the exorcism in Nell, exposing his tricks to the camera, but sooner they learn that the dysfunctional Sweetzer family has serious problems. Phantom's review: Some of these documentary/Lost footage style movies are quite good ("Cloverfield", "rec") and some are a major pile of crap. Unfortunately "The Last Exorcism" falls into the second category. While the acting is good, this film goes nowhere fast. Absolutely no scares or suspense and a terribly anti-climatic ending. A total waste of time. |
