"Red Riding Hood" (2011)
-Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, Shiloh Fernandez Plot: IMDB Valerie (Seyfried) is a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter (Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry (Irons). Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie's older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Hungry for revenge, the people call on famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon (Oldman), to help them kill the wolf. But Solomon's arrival brings unintended consequences as he warns that the wolf, who takes human form by day, could be any one of them. As the death toll rises with each moon... Written by Warner Bros. Pictures Phantom's Review: I gotta be honest with you, I really didn't know what to expect from this film when we watched it. Was it going to be a "Wolfman" style "guts and gore" horror flick? Or some sort of lame "Twilight" type of film. Much to my surprise, the film seemed to follow a murder mystery type of format with almost the entire village locked behind walls and the werewolf is someone on the inside. You get a bunch of suspects to choose from and the director leads you in different directions as you try and figure it out. The film is beautifully shot and is surprisingly good, both in story and acting. The romance angle is a little cliche', but the ending is interesting. Overall, I liked it. |

All the adaptations except the last one are really goot The New 'View from a Hill' and Number 13 are top notch and I think The Ash Tree is my favourite of the older ones though they're all good. Jacques Tourneur's Night of the Demon is also based on a James story (Casting the Runes) - there is also a 70's TV version of it too. |

Fright Night (2011)
I was really, really looking forward to this one...the trailers were great, and after In Bruges I've really been a fan of Colin Ferrell. I thought this could be one of those rare "good" remakes...and, as far as I'm concerned, it turned out great. The start of the movie, however, is undeniably awful. Painful dialog delivered by horrible "teen" actors - even our hero Charley Brewster seems pathetic. The only thing that works right of the start is Christopher Mintz-Plasse (McLovin') as Evil Ed - turns out the kid is becoming a pretty decent actor, and he's perfect for the part. It stays pretty damn bad for a good long while - basically until Jerry really gets a chance to kick some ass, at which point it pulls at complete 180. Colin Ferrell plays a great monster, and even though it can get pretty corny at times, his Jerry has such an animal charisma that it sucks you right in. And once Charlie meets up with Peter Vincent (the always badass David Tennant, being awesome), it doesn't stop getting better right up to the ending. They manage to stay faithful to the original too, surprisingly. It updates a lot of course and some details are changed up here and there, but all things considered it stays pretty close. Can't speak for anyone else, but I thought this was a damn good remake - and just an overall blast of an action-packed horror comedy. If you can suffer through some horrible acting/dialog here and there, you should have a lot of fun. |

http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/...R20214317_.jpg With the remake out, i decided to revisit this movie. It's been awhile but it's still as fun as the first time i saw it. I forgot how awesome the death scenes were. I hope the remake can live up to it. |

"Conan The Barbarian" (2011)
-Jason Momoa Plot: IMDB The tale of Conan the Cimmerian and his adventures across the continent of Hyboria on a quest to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village. Phantom's Review: Awesome! This was a great movie. Exactly what I wanted in a Conan movie. A story right out of the pulps, extreme violence, gallons of gore, evil witches, sorcery, sword fights and lots of naked woman. Jason Momoa is fine as Conan (his style/look is more Barry Windsor-Smith, than John Buscema) and the film is shot well. I enjoyed it a lot. |
Just watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
It was good, very good even. The ending was a little anticlimatic but I'm under the impression there is a sequel already in the works so it makes sense really. Plus, there is some extra parts after the initial credits so be sure to stick around for a little bit. This sets the scene for a follow up nicely. The CGI is frankly, amazing. The few laughable parts are, I think, a result of the difficulty of showing increasing intelligence. For that reason, I don't think the film should be criticised as they did well with a difficult idea. They just pushed it a little too far and it became a tad farcical. |
