Hall Pass

Pretty funny. Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I was glad it didn't go overboard with the moralistic side of things like so many films of this type do. The best thing the Farrellys have done since Kingpin. Lots of fun.

The Villain 05-29-2011 05:01 PM

Hangover 2

It was funny but pretty much exactly like the first one. With that being said they can just keep doing these movies and just slightly change one or two things and they'll still make loads of money.

ferretchucker 05-29-2011 06:14 PM

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

I enjoyed it. It wasn't so convoluted and up itself as the last two. It had a nice atmosphere and was very Indiana Jones...

My first 3 BluRays

*Kick-Ass
*Earth
*Dawn of the Dead ('78)

...Really impressed by how we Dawn was taken over to the format. Beautiful...

Earth was pretty cool, I'd like to get more wildlife/nature doco stuff on BluRay, it's just like you're there...especially looking forward to getting "Microcosmos" on that. Stunning stuff.

Kick-Ass = reviewed before. Good film. Nice adaptation of the comic that didn't butcher things *all that* much. (Though I preferred the origin of Big Daddy in the comics...) Friend liked it. Overall fun film that I think a lot of comic enthusiasts should have in their collection. I'd love to see more Millar stuff make it to film.

Clash of the Titans - 7/10

I really enjoyed it and it looks amazing but don't be fooled into thinking it's artistic or well crafted. It is what it is, a big budget, swords and sandals romp. The action is awesome and it's supremely entertaining. Perfect accompaniment to your Sunday night hangover.

Make-Out with Violence (2008)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...thViolence.jpg http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...Violence_4.jpg

Narrated by their younger brother Beetle, the story centers on twin brother Patrick & Carol; and the neighborhood girls they silently adore. But when Patrick’s love interest Wendy Heart mysteriously disappears & at one point everybody eventually given up for dead, the lives of the brothers take a dark turn as one sad summer say Wendy return as a barely reanimated corpse! Mystified by her condition, Patrick, takes the lead and nurtures her over the summer when a rotting girlfriend is better than no girlfriend at all.

Though it kinda sounds like Deadgirl but this is more of a coming-of-age teen drama than a zombie horror flick. As an indie film it was pretty well made with a fresh cast & good performance but not for everyone.

I skip that one, thank you.

Thought Deadgirl was a big bore.

Watched two today actually - first was Freddy vs Jason, then Halloween ll (the original). Although Freddy vs Jason wasn't particularly scary...

wtb2612 05-30-2011 08:29 PM

Psycho Beach Party - I actually really liked it, it's super funny and original. It gets a little stale after a while, but it's short so it's not a big deal. Amy Adams was super hot in it.

A Fish Called Wanda - One of the best comedies ever made.

The King's Speech

Loved it. Reaffirms my opinion of Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush as two of the best actors alive today.

Ditto. A beautiful film with great performances by both of them.

The Rain aka Dark Fields (2009)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...DarkFields.jpg http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...hdc/RainV2.jpg

The residents of Perseverance are oppressed with a curse after digging out a 'hat' of Indian Shaman. Each year they suffer an affliction to their bodies and a drought to their land. Desperate to save their families, the people of Perseverance make a pact with that evil-supernatural shaman who promises to bring rain to their town in exchange for the sacrifice of three of their children.

Though the plot sounds kinda cliched and the film is bit too long in length with some dull moments but it wasn't a bad movie at all. I kinda liked it. The tale of that cursed town told over in 3 generations in 3 parallel stories and they weave together nicely. The story is at times a bit on the cheesy side but a few other moments are more tense. The director did a good job at transitioning among the storylines by keeping the continuity intact. The cast includes David Carradine, Dee Wallace, Richard Lynch and Evil Dead’s Ellen Sandweiss.

"Fertile Ground" 5-6/10

Mediocre haunted house movie using the cheapest trick in the book to scare its audience. Sudden loud music. Bravo.

"The Ward" 7/10

Piss poor story, but with a nice twist at the end.

Not exactly a great watch but at least it was entertaining.

"The Shrine" 7/10

This one HAD and interesting story, but just like "Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer" director Knautz could have pulled it off much better. Also, I would have liked to see Trevor Matthews in the lead role, coz i thought he did a really good job in Jack Brooks. But he was good as well as a Polish sect member.

Damien x 2.

Story, acting, direction, visuals. Pretty much everything about it was solid.

Thanks for the rec, Ros.

The Ward

It was decent. I liked the ending but i've seen this kind of thing a couple times so nothing really new.

Definitely not John Carpenter's best but not all of his movies can be as good as Halloween and The Thing. Not his worst either. I enjoyed it.

I highly enjoyed it! Pretty entertaining with an unpredictable twist at the end...yeah, I didn't see that coming. A good comeback for John Carpenter.

Stake Land (2010)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/.../Stakeland.jpg

A very decent post-Vampocalyptic film. But I was expecting something more in the end which turned out rather very simple with a little hint for a sequel (?) may be.

An average 'rape & revenge' exploitation flick from Argentina with some wooden acting & flat characters.

13 Assassins - 8/10

Highly entertaining sword play flick. The final scene, the battle sequence, lasts a long time and is totally engrossing. The setting for this final explosive stage is raw, violent and gripping. By the time the powder keg goes off, I found myself chomping at the bit to see some retribution.

In short, wonderful, emotive story telling with a superb climax. Check it!!!

Shutter Island

I did find it confusing at times, but i caught on for the most part pretty quick. Afterwards I think in all it was a pretty predictable ending. And the clues became clear to me of what was going on.

Yea... life as a mediocre metal band is hard.

"Secretary" 7/10

Excellent performances from Spader and Gyllenhaal, but the story and events moved on too slowly for my taste and the ending was disappointingly mild. I had hoped the weird-ass work relationship between the two would keep escalating and finally end with something grotesque, even murder.
That was before i looked it up on IMDB to find out this was a comedy/romance... :(

neverending 06-02-2011 11:53 AM

The 4th Floor.

An excellent cast (Juliette Lewis, John Hurt, Shelly Duvall, Austin Pendelton) is wasted in a pedestrian "woman moves into a new apartment and is terrorized by bizarre neighbors" film.

Kind of worth a watch to see Shelly Duvall doing a later day Karen Black impression.

The ending message also pissed me off a bit.

Completely agree if you're going to make a movie out of a BDSM relationship at least include some BDSM!

swiss tony 06-02-2011 04:49 PM

Outpost - 3/10

Really not worth watching. Somebody ripped off The Keep and The Fog (the movie) and made this. The supporting actors were pretty talentless and the atmosphere was non-existent. There's little enough time to cram all the movies you wanna watch in, without wasting time on this.

AVOID!!!

You're jaded. This is one of the most amazing true crime movies I've ever seen. The atmosphere is taught and nail-biting from the moment the shooting starts to the end.

I was particularly impressed by the honest portrayal of how this small town dealt with something completely outside its experience. The raw low-budget, almost documentary feeling also helped to honestly impart the emotions of the situation far better than a slick Hollywood approach would have.

Elvis_Christ 06-02-2011 08:52 PM

Ahhh the Virgin Suicides. Sophia Coppola has never topped this one.

Didn't really like Black Swan as much a lot of people.

Monster Dog looks fucking awesome I'm off to check that shit out now.
