Still more NETFLIX Tarzan films with Johnny Weissmuller getting to the end of his series and really running out of gas, especially the last one. Best part for us is all the cool Horror thespians (mostly from Universal) in them like Brenda Joyce as Jane (Inner Sanctums), Barton McLain (THE MUMMY'S GHOST), Charles Trowbridge (THE MUMMY'S HAND), Maria Ouspenskaya (THE WOLFMAN, FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN), Acquanetta (CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN, DEAD MAN'S EYES), George Zucco (THE MUMMY'S HAND, THE MAD GHOUL) and the lovely Patricia Morison (DEAD MAN'S EYES, HITLER'S MADMAN, and DRESSED TO KILL).
TARZAN AND THE AMAZONS (1945) **1/2 TARZAN AND THE LEOPARD WOMAN (1946) **1/2 TARZAN AND THE HUNTRESS (1947) *** TARZAN AND THE MERMAID (1948) *1/2 |
On the films you listed that are not Tarzan, I have them all and really enjoy watching all. Great films. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

KING KONG (1933). Still wanting to go to the jungle, even after all the TARZAN films::big grin::. Saw this in the theater when I was eight on a 1970 re-issue....was really in to dinosaurs and just loved this from beginning to end. Surprised they did not eject me from the theater during the Kong/T-Rex square off!
Moved a lot as a kid and started watching sports while living above Chicago IL (really no interest) to try to fit in at school. During the Jan 1977 Super Bowl (Know Oakland Raiders won), a station out of Milwaukee WI was showing KING KONG the same time. You can probably deduce what I watched that day. Still love this and can only shake my head at fools who try to find all sorts of racial/social/sexual messages in the film. You only need to know it's a great entertaining movie...PERIOD! ***** |
The Vampire (1957)
Beast From 20,000 Fathoms. Dracula's Daughter From Hell It Came |
20 Million Miles to Earth

ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE MUMMY (1955). Some good chuckles and cast in here, but a lot of gags are recycled and it's clear the team was running on empty. Worth seeing- Not as great as A&C MEET FRANKENSTEIN,but better than A&C MEET DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE. **1/2

BLOOD FEAST (1963). Back in the early 90's, started a little bi-weekly meeting I called "B-Movers" where a group of us would bring over munchies and go to someone's residence to watch 2-3 films, usually ones that were older or a little unusual-or in plain speaking, not the stuff the masses made into big hits that usually weren't that good. Not surprisingly, most of them were held at my place and would usually show a couple of trailers (usually from SINISTER CINEMA VHS's), a Warners Cartoon or Three Stooges short before beginning.
Also, not surprisingly, I would always sneak a Horror film in . Had some unusual linesups in there like FIEND WITHOUT A FACE/WIZARDS/USED CARS, SERIAL MOM/THE TINGLER, CAPE FEAR (62)/HENRY:PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER to name a few. The very first meeting had THE BIG HEAT (1953-EXCELLENT crime film I highly recommend)/BLOOD FEAST/DRACULA (Spanish version of the Lugosi film). Probably the first all out gore film with lots of splatter, limbs being chopped off, internal organs being removed, sadism etc etc. Also, probably some of the WORST acting ever, non existent production values and a maddening organ/tympani score . . Many groaned at the defects, but appreciated the action and for a few weeks, "Make The Heart of an Old Man Glad!" was uttered among us. Re-watching it again recently, it is pretty awful, but still pretty intense in the bloody scenes. Also lots of laughs, particularly when Mrs Freemont meets with Fuad Ramses...the mind boggles. Many classic lines such as "Have You ever had...AN EGYPTIAN FEAST??!!??", "THis Man is Uncanny!", "It all happened so Fast!" and my favorite "Now...PROVE You Love Me!" Also, it's only 70 minutes, so before your tolerance runs out, it's practically over! ** |
House on Hunted Hill. Love Vincent Price

LAND OF THE PHAROAHS (1955). Very campy film about the building of the Giza pyramid in Egypt with a young Joan Collins already starting her evil ways! ***

Watching "Psycho" right now on the Sundance channel. Looks like they're having an Alfred Hitchcock marathon. Next movie up is "The Birds".

It's hard to introduce this movie to people who have no appreciation for suspenseful build up or black and white films. Why do I bother... ::roll eyes:: |

Island of Lost Souls
I recorded this months ago, and I think I watched it before, but I'm watching it again to finally check my tape for a clean recording and get it ready for more recording. Based on my favorite book, naturally I enjoy this movie. It's a good adaptation, with a better Moreau than the '96 film... Although the animals in that were more creative. Lost Souls is very basic but gets its point across with its filming and care to atmosphere. Quote:

How old is she? Psycho 1960 is an adult film. I'm not surprised a young person wouldn't comprehend the intrigue of the first half, it's quite an elaborate bates and switch. Or maybe, as a young 2016 woman, the social roles are too alien to her? |
An Abbott and Costello fest for the long weekend...Biggest shocker was spotting Tor Johnson in the last one.
1-ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN (1948) ***** 2-MEXICAN HAYRIDE (1948) *** 3-ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE KILLER, BORIS KARLOFF (1949) *** 4-ABBOTT AND COSTELLO IN THE FOREIGN LEGION (1950) *** |

DRACULA (Spanish Version)-1931. A Mexican crew made their version of the Tod Browning film after the day cast left using the same sets and script. While it's still flabby, this has a lot more oomph than the Bela film with the sets being used more wisely (The Carfax Abbey set barely used in the BL film is magnificent), many loose ends put together and quite a lot more violence.
The acting is still pretty hammy-Renfield and Martin really overdo it-amazing how lax the security at the Sanitarium is- and Harker is even more of a doily here than David Manners ever was. A big improvement with Lupita Tovar playing Mina...more vivacious than Helen Chandler and quite lovely too-no wonder Drac enjoyed nibbling on her! As the title character, Carlos Villarias gives the old college try, but he can't touch Bela's turn and I know I'm being petty, but whenever CV meets people in the film, all I can think of what a big Shit Eating grin He has! *** |
The Seventh Seal
Hadn't seen this for a long and I'd forgotten how good it is. Whats not to like, a knight returning from the crusades plays a game of chess with Death whilst seeking answers about life, death and god. |

BRAIN FROM PLANET AROUS (1958). As SINISTER CINEMA put it in their catalogue, John Agar is indeed "Precious" in here and gets to ham it up pretty good. Of course, the film is silly, the effects are cheesy and the acting is not all that, but it's a helluva a lot of fun.
So...What are You waiting for? *** |

Yeah, I love this flick too, for all the reasons you mentioned and more. The hair styles for one thing! This is really not the standard Bava fare in some respects, but all the trademarks in production and style are all over Planet of the Vampires. |
Just watched Eegah. Love that movie. Anyone else ever seen this?
