Starship Troopers
Picked up the boxset so I've been getting thru the series. Verhoeven is an amazing director he just brings so much stylistically to the table and lifts the bar on what would usually just be typical genre fodder (this film could've easily have been more like it's sequel had he not been at the helm). This still holds up well but is notably less dark in tone than his previous films. Starship Troopers 2 Nowhere near as bad as I remember it but still very average after how good the first film is. Lacks any of the class it's predecessor had and it's socially commentary falls pretty flat but I liked the premise of the bug controlling people. Bit of a waste really considering this could've had a Aliens meets The Thing going on if it had a better director/cast/budget. I'm hoping the third one's better. Quote:

Natalie Portman completely deserves Best Actress. The movie was beautiful, disturbing, and jerked me around trying to figure out what was going on. This is a terrible review but I haven't had a chance to properly compile my thoughts on it. So forgive the terribleness. Wow, I am surprised terribleness is actually word that Spellcheck doesn't catch. |

Black Swan (2010)
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/.../blackswan.jpg Very glad that after Shutter Island this year here’s another brilliant movie that comes with bit of an old school vibe of dark, twisted psychological thriller and the great news is this time in Black Swan the content gets unpredictably impulsive, results a shattering experience in a Roman Polanskian way. As Darren Aronofsky already admitted after making the film, there’s an adequate influence of Polanski’s Repulsion & The Tenant in Black Swan. And as a great fan of this sub genre I like to salute his effort & the way he make use of that ‘influence’ in his own convincing fashion. Aronosky proved his talent in dealing with dark, sophisticated & thought provoking subject matter in his earlier films like Requiem for a Dream & The Fountain (haven’t seen Pi yet). After The Wrestler he depicts a complete different art in Black Swan with darkly gleaming looks where again performance is disturbingly demanding. It’s a daunting tale of a ballerina (or we can say BalleNina) who gets lost into a spiral web of delusional fantasy and chilling reality. Like the theatrical tragic finale of Swan Lake, Portman remarkably delivered a ‘perfect’ & her career defining performance in this film. Kudos to the great little, powerful supporting cast who all gave a much needed perspective on Nina's slowly developing descendants into the madness. Overall, a nail-ripping provocative thriller indeed which is surely one of the best in 2010. >>: A And Soon the Darkness (2010) http://l.yimg.com/eb/ymv/us/img/hv/p...mallposter.jpg 1970’s original is one of my all time favorites. I like that a lot for its beautiful camera works & the way Robert Fuest developed & maintained the suspense till the end. So I wasn’t expecting that much from this remake but the thing is it had some potential to be at least decent. The production value, cinematography were good enough like the two beautiful female lead (hey V, one of them is Amber Heard!). But the disappointment comes just when the mystery begins to unfold and specially the way they wasted Karl Urban with his role at that point of the film. >>: C+ Buried (2010) http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...hdc/Buried.jpg It’s literally a 90 minute movie about a man trapped in a coffin. This may not appeal to all, but director Rodrigo Cortes made it wonderfully work with continuous several plot twists to maximize the suspense and solitary actor Ryan Reynolds delivered a pretty convincing performance (but I still think he’s the wrong choice for Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern:D) that expressively displays the nature of his terrifying ordeal. Overall, it’s an intelligent & creative thrill ride with a single character and a single setting that successfully holds the tension and toying with the viewer's anticipations from start to finish. >>: A- |
Despicable me - Much better than I was expecting...still in the realms of "family friendly" but does what it does well. I liked it, it was actually quite funny.
Dead Mans Shoes - Found some of the dialogue difficult to hear/understand but overall a very good film...it was pretty tragic, and left me feeling pretty unsettled but I suppose that speaks to it's success. |

It isn't. I loved the first one but the sequels suck leper balls. |
I never bothered with the third Starship Troopers...the second one was in my opinion completely sub par...I actually got about 25 minutes into this before I switched it off, which is something I rarely do, but yeah...not my thing at all.
I would not specifically OBJECT to seeing the third, considering it's meant to be at least a little bit more of a continuation of the first one than the second was, but yeah I'm not about to rush out and grab it. The animated series is something I watched a few times, actually thought that was pretty decent. Watched: A Serbian film - Yeah pretty nasty I suppose...though the one scene it's "known" for to me actually looked pretty deliberately fake (kuato comes to mind), but yeah otherwise it was fairly brutal and depressing. ...I don't know if I was confused or not, but I thought I'd heard something about someone being forced to eat a dick in this? did not see that...so what I read must have been talking not quite about "eating". It's not a bad attempt at a first film though. The Horde (La horde) Actually I thought this was one of the better "zombie" films I'd seen in a while...I had not heard of it before I grabbed it, and don't regret that I did. Not the most fulfilling ending, but some good gore/splatter, decent atmosphere and some great violence against zombies. Characters and storyline...meh...but it was above all enjoyable, I'd reco it to zombie fans looking for something new. |

"I Love You Phillip Morris" 7/10 - Thin, thin story and a lot of gay intimity that made me cringe several times. BUT it did have me laughing here and there. And once again Carrey did good. Really good.
"The loved ones" 8/10 - Amazing how a movie can work this well with a story that simple. Recommended to all horrorfans. If not for the story then for the performance of Robin McLeavy. You gotta love her character even tho she's utterly insane. :D (Too bad the genre doesn't allow her to be considered an Oscar nommination for best supporting actress). "Black Swan" 8/10 - and the Oscar goes to.... Sure, Portmans performance was flawless and the movie WAS good, no question about it. I'm just not a big ballet fan, so i honestly got a bit bored with all the dancing scenes. The rest was good. Predictable but good. And the finger-flesh ripping scene in the bathroom... brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.. GOD DAMN NASTY!!!! "Bad Ronald" 6-7/10 - Unique story. Poor guy. :( "Home movie" 3-4/10 - everything about it was disappointing. |

Cronos (1993). Guillermo del Toro's debut is a splendid take on a hit or oft miss genre. del Toro hits his mark with this Mexican offering that blends alchemical fantasy with the horror genre. Instead of centering on gore or relentless action, del Toro keeps the focus on life, and what is lost when life is pursued for quantity instead of quality. The story is simple but effective, with elements that could have seemed silly with another director's execution. The symbolism here is thick, and delightfully so. The actors are all appropriately named, marking their fundamental role in this rich flick. The tension is slow to build, but this only serves to fuel our appetites, like offering a snack on Thanksgiving morning in order to stave off our appetite for the ever-so distant afternoon feast. The acting was incredible, from the kindly grandfather, the silent and expression-filled child, and Ron Perlman's vanity-stricken thugness. As well, each character adds his or own unique caricature of humanity, ranging from the innocent truth of youth to the blinding delusion that tempts the aging into its nefarious snare. Blending horror with apropos comedy (like Perlman's abused nose), this low-budget movie will leave the audience with the feeling that they got their money's worth and more. The technicalities were assured, with the cinematographer to later offer his services to the likes of Tarantino and Rodriguez. With an ending whose simplicity marks the film's brilliance (literally), Cronos should enjoy a classic status when that movie birthday comes around. Merci beaucoup.

Rampage (2009)
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...dc/Rampage.jpg Surprisingly a pretty decent film from Uwe Boll! With a story content like that I think he really did an appreciating job, specially as a director. Moreover the lead character also delivered a fine performance here. Overall an interesting tensed action rampage with a nice little twist at the end. Liked it. >>: B+ Hunter Prey (2010) http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...unter_Prey.jpg Old school style a pretty good low budget full length Sci-Fi feature from the same guy who made such nice short like Batman: Dead End & that trailer World's Finest. He did his best within the limited budget & capacity in this nice action pack sci-fi story with continuous twists & turns till the end. With a better budget I believe he and his crew could have really done some more great work. Cause this guy (Sandy Collora) really has the potential & talent to make bunch of cool films in coming days. >>: B+ |

Saw 3D: Overall, I've liked the Saw series for the most part. The last few have become a bit stagnant though. The first was great, then at least with the sequels they tried to change it up a bit. After that they became quite formulaic. At least there seemed to be an over-arcing storyline being woven throughout the series which made it far more interesting than your typical slasher series like Friday the 13th or Freddy.
But now we come to what supposedly is the final movie. What a poor way to end the series. Although I guess technically they did end it in such a fashion that if they so chose, they could continue milking the franchise. I just couldn't get over the bad writing, the laughable special effects (strawberry jam-bright CGI blood and very silly looking CGI deaths), and just how none of the traps felt very Saw-like as they all pretty much felt unsurvivable. I sincerely hope that this is the actual final addition to the series. It's just too bad that it's such a terrible end to it all. |

"True Grit" (2010)
-Jeff Bridges I gotta admit, I was surprised by how much I liked this film. Great acting, cinematography and dialog. It doesn't embarrass the original film and might actually bring new fans to the western genre. Go see it, I think you'll like it, |

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009). This Swedish thriller begins by crafting some character tension and then goes on to provide a rather meaty story. Unlike US flicks, it follows its own movie infrastructure, in effect placing moments of tension and resolve into its refreshing occupation, and the result is more than satisfying. At first the title seems a misnomer, but as the story builds up the titular character reveals her significance, and in fact earns her name in the limelight. The acting was stupendous all around, with some great names in the background playing roles that supported the two main protags instead of trying to outshine them. The characters, instead of being the typical caricatures found in film, instead are slowly revealed to be real people with believably difficult pasts, engaging the audience to root for them but not to be let down by the difficulty of their choices. The main theme of this flick is handled with care, and instead of insulting the viewer's intelligence it remains subtle enough for esteemed contemplation during and after its enjoyment. The technicalities are all handled with a polished professionalism, and the result is a flick that grabs the audience for the duration. Not a flick for every one, with compelling scenes that will disturb the sensitives in the crowd, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a must see for champions of foreign cinema that are not put off by some grim scenarios. d |
"The experiment" 8/10
I like prison movies a lot. And i thought both Whitaker and Brody did a terrefic job in this one. There was only a very few thing i didn't like about this movie. 1. I don't believe everything can go wrong that fast. We're talking 5 days here. 2. the ending could've been better. Like.. could we get some explanations please?? Good watch tho. One of the best of 2010. |

A Lizard in a Woman's Skin (1971). Giallos are usually a hit or miss thing for me, and Fulci always lands on the miss side of the ledger, until Lizard that is. The opening sequence is one of the most captivating cinematic embarkation ever made, and it becomes the film's focus for the remainder. The feel of the flick is that of a bad acid trip made worse by the intrusion of reality. The imagery alone makes Lizard worth a go, but its stylish look is but one of its remarkable attributes. The acting and dialog are at times laughable, but injected into the meat of this flick are believable bits and pieces that keep the eyes from tiring from relentless rolling. Ernie Morricone's score is appropriately punctuated by a splendid and jazzy score, adding to the impressive and psychedelic atmosphere of this 70s mystery. Lucio Fulci has finally proved that he actually can direct with concentrated aplomb, heresy I know but my opinion none the less. The camera works its magic with stunning visuals and creative takes, which is all the more appreciated since its lens supported by the other aspects of movie making as opposed to standing alone in its wizardry. Amazingly, it is the story that is the standout here, a murder mystery that captivates the audience throughout only to utilize the last segment to wonderfully throw our guesses of culpability in every imaginable direction, only to have the truth thrown in our face at the last possible minute, a truth that should have been obvious but that was wonderfully kept out of reach. All in all, Lizard is a giallo with impressive performances by Fulci and crew whose trippy sequences are actually supported by the story as opposed to be encumbered by it. Merci.

But i don't believe the happenings and actions were as extreme as in this movie. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_prison_experiment "Zimbardo aborted the experiment early when Christina Maslach, a graduate student he was then dating (and later married), objected to the appalling conditions of the prison after she was introduced to the experiment to conduct interviews. Zimbardo noted that of more than fifty outside persons who had seen the prison, Maslach was the only one who questioned its morality. After only six days of a planned two weeks' duration, the Stanford Prison experiment was shut down." Still scary tho. Once again we see that men are crap.. |
