I like the way you never really know what is going on, you can draw your own conclusions, otherwise a pretty typical Haneke flick. 7.5/10 http://onlinefilmhome.dk/images/manderlay.jpg I can't believe I got bored with a Lars Von Trier movie, I only got half way through before I coudn't be bothered anymore. I hope the ending was good, but I will never know. 2/10 http://www.posters.ws/images/941274/stunt_rock.jpg Great cheesy fun from Brian Trenchard-Smith, it's as the title sugest, stunts and rock 'n' roll! 7/10 |

Un prophete (2009). With all of the usual suspects present for a typical prison drama, it is hard to believe that this flick could find a sprig of originality. Instead, this incredible French drama creates a patulous world of its own with which to succor in the viewer with its visual buffet. A gritty coming of age story, the central character is clay with which society's dregs gets a free hand to mold. The surprise is that the hardened statute of iniquitous art has become a dichotomy between humanity and shrewd duplicity. The story was wonderful, blending a tale of incarceration with an eerie, almost hallucinogenic sideline of one's conscience. The direction was sublime, and the camera work was impressive without being obtrusive. Clocking in at around 150 minutes, not a second is wasted, leaving the viewer wanting more but satisfied, especially with that almost incongruous yet touching ending. Genruk |

I thought this was good fun, a rock 'n' roll vampire road movie with some great cameos, none better than Rollins one, that was classic. The songs are pretty lame though, better music could have made this a cult classic. 6.5/10 http://i43.tower.com/images/mm115526...-cover-art.jpg I was never going to watch another Uwe Bowl movie, but the blurb and front cover got me interested. It is a fucked flick, ultrs violent is an understatement. It actualy makes you feel something, which I never thought I would say about one of Boll's flicks. I recomend it to everyone who hates his movies. 8/10 |

Night of the Hunter (1955). Eschewing traditional cinematic storytelling, this wonderful classic is the epitome of an odyssey as told through the eyes of children. A tale of a bogeyman in sheep's clothing, this flick meanders in its own way, sometimes dreamily, towards its own style of denouement. Robert Mitchum is awesome as the rotten preacher man, unctuously worming his way into the hearts of his victims, innocent lambs that they are. The children's parts were no less awesome, their plight a heart-wrenching journey into the unknown world of a depressed era. The direction was superb; it is sad that this actor did not make good the transition of actor to director. The camera work was awesome, with shot composure that was nothing less than magical. The ending congealed the fact that this was not a formulaic piece, instead ending on a note of its design. Merci beaucoup.

"Predators" 8/10
Entertaining from the first second, but nothing more than that. Typical sequal characters. "Case 39" 6-7/10 Seen a similar story more than once before, but it was quite decent nevertheless. Zellweger & Ferland did good. |
seen couple of entertaining films last night...two of them were pretty "exciting", all I can say now it was like "Night of the BooBies!" I'll write them about soon but any guess now??;)

Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)
Oh, same old acrobats! To me, it's the weakest entry so far in the series. >>: C Piranha 3D (2010) http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6281/piranha3d.jpg Wow! It was a blast! Gore & nudity on epic proportion, but that 'twist' at the last scene was unnecessary. Otherwise absolutely as well as thoroughly enjoyed it. >>: B+ Night of the Demons (2009) http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/8...hedemons09.jpg Quote:

Lake Placid (1999). A light-hearted affair, Lake Placid is one of those flicks that is best entertained when one could use a little comic relief. From the get go, this is a blatant comic ripoff of Jaws and it knows it. More so, Lake Placid never tends towards serious aspirations as it assiduously attends to the business at hand, which is to make fun of itself. The cast all deliver their roles with the aplomb accorded their due. Oliver Platt and Betty White are top notch competitors for the agency of hilarity. The story itself takes a backseat to the fun here, and in doing so the willing viewer is bequeathed to some 88 minutes of creature feature joy. Merci beaucoup.

Brick (2005). It's accelerated English meets seedy underworld, totally unbelievable, but no body's counting, no body cares. This neo-film noir piece is set in high school, with all the right elements transposed onto the world of geeks and stoners, thespians and socialites. With dialog taken straight from another genre and seamlessly integrated into our heroes and villains, Brick creates a world both familiar and strange, transporting the viewer into a new realm of the universe. The acting was solid with characters that never strayed. The dialog was sublime though a tad discombobulating. The story itself was wickedly smart and stylish. Directed with flair and aplomb, Brick almost creates a genre unto itself, almost.

"The hole" 7/10
Oh Roshiq... were to begin. In short (as always). Exactly like "Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer" this one started out very promising with good funny dialogue, good story, good pacing and a good build-up. But the problem with both movies is the constant build-up until a disappointing ending. For shame.. "Four boxes" 4/10 Not really a horror movie. Good actors/ Annoying computer nerd characters who are at least 10 years too old for their computer slang vocabulary. The low budget story moved on veeeeeeeeeeeeeery slowly until the last twisted 15 minutes, which not many would've guessed, i'm sure. The very ending was crap and didn't make a lot of sense. "The Descent 2" 7/10 Just like "Predators". A good entertaining sequal, but not a lot of new added to it. A nice return of one of the characters tho. "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" 6/10 Thought the story was quite bad and uninteresting, but the visuals and all the famous faces mad up for it in the end. |

I love Romero, I really do, and I usually give him a bit of a pass on some of his stuff. Land of the Dead; universally panned but for a zombie movie it was... above average. Sure it didn't have all the trademark Romero goodness but he was handcuffed by the bigwigs in Hollywood this time right? Diary of the Dead came along, ok, no more Hollywood but with that came no budget either. Wasn't a problem in Night... but, with a unique spin on the standard zombie story I bought into it even with social commentary that was neither subtle or new. Yesterday I finally caught his new one... Survival of the Dead... I wish I hadn't. The characters were almost all weak, the story was poorly paced with a message that was spoon fed to the audience, his effects were sad (forget CG George, WE WANT SAVINI), and the atmosphere Romero generally creates was missing completely. In short: I fell asleep.

Home Movie (2004). Some body needs a vicious spanking. This disturbing tale of a family gone horribly south laments that the end is not going to be pleasant, and it certainly does not disappoint. To eschew those moments of stupidity, where the characters behave with retarded capacity, is one necessity of the viewer, for these parents absolutely blow it at times. The acting was top rate for such an endeavor, with exceptional performances by the children, creepy little things that they were. Adrian Pasdar was a sheer treat to watch- what a ham. There are some fun connections between the lessons of the father and how the children take note and put words into discommoding action, all to wicked effect. For those not charmed by home movie style flicks, best to stay away. As well, this was a chilling affair turned dark as black towards its end- stay away happy happy joy joy fans. As to the rest, this short little psycho-thriller might just be reason enough to get those tubes tied. Mercie beaucoup.

Predators....it was what it was...didn't hate it |
Virtuosity: Quite a good movie that other than the stupid 80s wardrobes has aged surprisingly well.
The Hole: Very fun movie with a great combination of scares and kids as one would expect from Dante. A bit derivative as it borrows a bit too heavily from other movies, but worth a watch nonetheless. |
Road Kill
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6.../road_kill.jpg Not bad. Definitely not what I was expecting. Has the sort of mood that you get from movies like Reeker and Dead End - You know that something's not quite right - And it's not. Not quite "supernatural," this movie is definitely odd. The final "reveal" isn't much a "reveal" since the whole movie is building up to a predictable outcome but, regardless, I enjoyed this one. Better than average, which is more than one can hope for when randomly sampling new horror movies On Demand. 2.75/5. ... Get Him to the Greek http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...rl/get_him.jpg What a blast - I really enjoyed this one. Jonah Hill was his usual funny straight-man self and Russell Brand was surprisingly restrained AND hilarious. Then again, I thought that he was the funniest part of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, so this movie was pretty highly-anticipated for me. Unfortunately, looking at the movie holistically, I think that the parts are definitely greater than the whole. Sometime I found myself laughing out loud (like at the hilarious fake music videos) and sometimes I found myself just "waiting" for the next funny part to come. Regardless, it's a good buddy comedy. Mindless and fun. The fake songs are my favorite part. 3.75/5. |

Santa Sangre (1989)
One of the most beautiful, powerful film experiences I've ever had. Was lucky enough to catch a screening at a great local theatre from a 35mm print...truly amazing. I love El Topo, but this is by far my new favourite from Jodorowsky...I'm at a loss for words, really. Never seen anything like it. |

And before too long we'll (finally) have this wonderful R1 DVD: http://twitchfilm.net/news/2010/09/j...-to-bluray.php |
The Five Obstructions (2003). This documentary might be the best window into the insane mastery of cinema that is Lars von Trier. In a way, Lars attempts to use the essence of struggle to to find the the humanity beneath a facade, in this case of his mentor Jorgen Leth. The result is a mixture of sing song dialog, boring shots that are worth their weight in gold in establishing reality, and the brilliance that is born of the struggle. In doing so, as the tables are turned, the intent comes to full circle and a half in the way by which the essence of both directors drop their towels and reveal their naked selves. This is a must for fans of film auteur, for those more interested in the essence of cinema as opposed to the its capacity for entertainment. As well, the results of the challenges are cinematic gold and are in themselves worth the investment of the retinae.

Escape From New York: Finally got around to watching the blu-ray release. It's quite a nice transfer, better than I was hoping for. Maybe it's just the increase in detail, but it seemed like in a fair number of scenes the depth of field was very shallow. The main focal point was tack sharp, but then the periphery was out of focus. My main gripe about this release though would have to be the utter lack of extras. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Pretty disappointing. Although I guess with what MGM is going through it's not too surprising, but they could have at least thrown on the extra stuff from the special edition release even if it wasn't HD.

The Incredible Two Headed Transplant
http://www.grindhousedatabase.com/im...headedpost.jpg not as much fun as "The Thing With Two Heads"...but a hoot anyway |
My 31 Nights Of Halloween Celebration continues with:
"Vampires" (1998) -James Woods Plot: Moviefone John Carpenter directed this horror-western, adapted from the novel Vampire$ by John Steakley, illuminating the pivotal figure of fearless vampire killer Jack Crow (James Woods), who lost his parents to the creatures. In a remote New Mexico location, Crow and his team, protected with chain-mail fang shields on their throats, blast away at a vampire nest, haul them out with the Jeep's winch, and then celebrate by pulling on other wenches at the Sun God Motel. Their revels are soon brought to an end by king vampire Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith), who became invulnerable after a bungled "inverse exorcism" during the 14th Century. Amid the motel mayhem, Jack escapes, along with his buddy Montoya (Daniel Baldwin) and hooker Katrina (Sheryl Lee). Since Katrina was already bitten by Valek, they use her as a decoy to locate Valek. Cardinal Alba (Maximilian Schell) sends padre Guiteau (Tim Guinee) to join Crow, who is unaware that Montoya has been bitten by Katrina. The hunt begins. Phantom's Review: I like this movie. It's a good gory R rated horror movie. Plenty of blood soaked action and some cool scary vampires.(remember when vamp's were supposed to be scary?) Highly enjoyable. and "Shutter Island" (2010) -Leonardo DiCaprio Plot: IMDB It's 1954, and up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. He's been pushing for an assignment on the island for personal reasons, but before long he wonders whether he hasn't been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister. Teddy's shrewd investigating skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals "escape" in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything - his memory, his partner, even his own sanity. Phantom's Review: Excellent Hitchcock style psychological thriller from director Martin Scorsese. Great atmosphere and acting and with enough twists and turns to make you car sick. A superior film. |

I held of on seeing this for a while, but finaly gave in, it was a bit lame. the scenes that were taken from the original had no where near the impact they did in the 1984 version. The new Kruger didn't cut it for me at first as he didn't look or seem as human, but he got better as the movie went on. 4/10 http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile...051_3398_n.jpg This was a pretty slick remake, a lot of fun, everyone should check this out sometime this month. 8/10 |
