mary shelley's frankenstein
|
I think Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is a classic. Personally, I couldn't care less about Frankenstein. If I had to care however, this is the one I would likely watch. It really isn't scary at all, but it is definitely a rather entertaining watch. It reminds me of high school.

Rogue (2007). This was simply a solid Aussie entry into the creature feature genre. The cinematography took full advantage of the stunning and vast beauty of the Northern Territory. With much ardor the crew earned their keep both on the sets and in the actual wilds, doing one in-water scene with reports of a 3 meter croc in the area, later confirm to be true. The acting was solid and believable, with extra tension from authentic fear helping to color their performances. The direction was more than solid; this guy knows how to shoot a beautiful picture. The cinematography, with the cinematographer given artistic license to shoot his wares, was impressive. The animatronics and CGI were also well done, with lots of actual motion study of real life critters and even water. The string score was used with genius, making for either a lilting lure of the splendor of the territory or adroitly creating an audible feel for the presence of our creepy creature. All things considered, this was a simple and effective horror story with a freak of nature as our anti-hero. Merci beaucoup.

A pretty lame story, bad acting, it didn't leave itself with anywhere to go at all. Hopefully Hatchet 2 won't be this dissapointing. 4/10 |
Driller Killer (1979). Some of Abel Ferrara's earliest work, this is not to be dismissed by fans of his later and admittedly better work. DK serves as the director's budding work, an unsophisticated rose that unfolds in pathological squalor. Unfairly relegated to the status of "video nasty," DK is more of a punk rock degeneration of the mind amongst the pains of artistic capacity left unexpressed if not squashed in a repressive New York City. Abel plays the lead role, chunky but still enjoyable, and his acting cohorts lend competent support to his rather quirky role. The music and audio is punk rock rugged, a flick meant to be played loud to increase the inner animosity of the viewer. Where the movie itself falls short, its portrayal as an artistic expression of a squalid era makes up for this shortcoming. Not for everyone, DK is still mandatory for those calling themselves fans of the darker movie genres. Merci beaucoup.

The Tournament
I was expecting a brainless actioner, and a brainless actioner I got, that was no bad thing though.I wanted an undemanding hour and half of people being punched, kicked, shot, stabbed, throttled and blown up.The film obliged and I was entertained.7/10 Demons 2 It's been years since I watched this and while it's not on a par with the first it's still fun, albeit in a bady dubbed, campy kind of way. 6/10 |

The Final Destination
I'm going to say the same thing I said about "Resident Evil: Afterlife", If you liked the others you will like this one. |
Blindness
What would happen if a segment of the population started going blind, for no apparent reason? Avery interesting and well told story. Deals with the situation on the human level, much in the same way that one movie about infected people trapped in a sealed house does (help me out here, Chrono...). Hedges its bets a bit by having one person remain sighted, and has a somewhat facile ending- still, the journey is worth the time. Recommended. |
Beneath The Planet of the Apes
Escape From The Planet of the Apes Conquest of The Planet of the Apes 1 more left, then into a horror marathon till the end of October. |
Spoorloos aka The Vanishing (1988)
http://content8.flixster.com/movie/31/11/311198_pro.jpg One of the most anticipated movies for me that I was looking for years. An excellent psychological thriller indeed. Absolutely loved it for its brilliant camera work, characterization and the gripping performance of the cast. >>: A- The Vanishing (1993) The surprising part is this stupid remake made by the same director of the original!?! >>: D Cell 211 (2009) http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/4978/cell211.jpg Wow! A surprisingly very entertaining prison revolt action packed drama that has the capacity to keep you at the edge of your seat. The story of this 8 Goya Award winning (Spanish Oscars!) film follows a newly hired prison officer finds himself in the midst of a prison riot after an unforeseen turn of events. With the inmates around him unaware of his position, he must pretend to be a prisoner to survive. As from the beginning with mounting amount of tension the story evolves in unexpected ways, changing our perceptions of characters and the situation again and again. This film has it all, intelligence, action, drama, suspense, sadness and even a dash of comedy through all the madness. Kudos to the director & the entire cast for their spectacular performance that mostly contributed to made it so intense & engaging till the end. Highly Recommended. >>: A- |
Circulation (2008). This visionary flick will likely see more scorn than accolades, but such is the way of the experimental writer/director. As a movie proper I suppose a case can be made against it, but this is far from standard fare. Instead it is a unique vision of philosophical proportions applied to one of the greatest questions ever posed by man. The result is a unique if not chunky vision of the feral capacity of humankind. The acting was solid enough, with the frustration of differing cultures and languages portrayed with interesting results. The direction was fresh; this guy might just be the next unflinching auteur if he sticks to his guns and does not fall prey to the tired parameters of acceptable movie making fare. The camera work added as much to the vision as did the story itself, a wandering, tireless journey on the reel of existence. The ending was unexpected and gave chase to more contemplation, just as this movie set out to accomplish. Merci beaucoup.

I however knew what to expect when buying the DVD so I wasn't really disappointed. In fact, I kind of enjoyed the title. It wasn't terrific by any means, but it was a fun little flick. It was a VERY dark movie with a surprising brutal ending. |
The Bad Sleep Well (1960). This lesser known phantom of Kurosawa's Shakespeare trilogy turns out to be a masterful study of the moral corruption of Japan, as if this degeneracy is for corruption's sake, sans any avaricious designs. The usual suspects turn up to the show, with Mifune and company giving their usual standout performances. The story, with its relaxed Shakespearean association, takes its time letting loose its plot; AKA, it tends to drag a bit. For those with patience, the morass is worth the wait to see how the tragedy ties up its evil threads. Direction and shot composition were splendid, as should be expected from this master. For a different take on Shakespeare and even Kurosawa, this classic might be worth a go. Merci beaucoup.

Highlander: I can't even remember the last time I watched this film all the way through. It was probably when I was about 15 and thought the movie kicked so much ass. Now? Not nearly as much. If any movie deserves to be remade, it's Highlander. The storyline is great, but everything else sucks. The acting is terrible. Clancy Brown is great, but Christopher Lambert? He couldn't act to save his life. Even Sean Connery's perfomance is pretty lackluster and far too cheesy. I guess the fact that he's an Egyptian with his trademark "Shcottish acshent" doesn't really help. The special effects while passable at the time are severely dated now so a remake with good actors and proper special effects would rock all kinds of ways. Still a good watch, but I can't help but wonder how much better a remake would be.
Predators: Easily the best Predator movie. Holy crap. Take everything that was awesome about the first Predator movie and throw out the cheesy one-liners and rippling biceps. I was thoroughly impressed from start to finish. The only thing that had me worried was this: (spoiler) It seemed like they ditched the whole Topher Grace is a serial killer character angle and made him a doctor which might seem plausible. The predators might include a doctor just to keep the hunt more interesting? They really gave next to no clues that he was in fact psychotic until the very end. So in those regards it was well done, but throughout the movie I was worried that for some reason they decided that idea was too much or something? (spoiler) |

Dead and Breakfast (2004). Horror comedies all walk the line between stupid and fun, with the former the usual victim of this difficult genre. Dead and Breakfast instead breaks into the magical realm of pleasantly enjoyable over the top carnage of blood strewn mayhem. The acting was solid for the genre, with horror regular Jeremy Sisto and even David Carradine showing his mug. The gore was more funny the disturbing, but those with weak stomach still might be best steer clear as heads do roll in this flick. The combination of the storyboard intervals laced with the hilarious music of Zach Selwyn were more than a treat. The technicalities were all up for the challenge of this comic and bloody affair. The end remarkably leaves room for a sequel that might best be left as a threat. Merci beaucoup.
