Plot:A Mexican revolutionary hires an American gunslinger to organize the rescue of their leader from a brutal army prison. |

Phantom's Review: Second sequel to the American western classic. Not as good as the original, but very entertaing nonetheless. Plenty of action and humor and all the actors do good jobs. A fun film.

Splice-not a bad film but a little slow in places. Adrian Brody is nice though

Prince of Darkness (1987). This offering by John Carpenter at first is in want of one small item- decent acting. With time though, this deficit almost becomes endearing as this creepy little flick builds momentum. In fact, maybe the initial lack of talent is the springboard of some of the creepiest scenes ever to grace the silver screen. With eerie, giggling maniacs, street people gone awry, and doe-eyed monsters, things really fall apart for our potential heroes. There is even a smattering of humor to perk up the dismal atmosphere that belies this little horror's premise. While the actors seem to be in the infancy of their careers, the dialog is at times the driving force of the hideous terror that is this flick's foundation. Who knew quantum physics could be so scary? JC's direction was solid, taking this low-budget endeavor and creating a memorable flick from beginning to end. The score turned out to be a perfect fit, timed with adroit skill for effect. But what is memorably burned into the memory banks was that dream video from a different era, whose message portends that the story does not end with the rolling of the credits...

City of Men (2007). From the producers of City of God, this flick brings us back to the slums of Rio. A story of friendship, it centers less on violence and more on family, especially the duties that young men should honor lest they bestow on their children the same ignominious fate that was handed them. It is not an easy choice. The acting was first rate and contained some scenes that will make the American public cringe at the audacity of the film producers. A violent flick, its presence is more in the background and is not gratuitous by any means. The direction was fabulous, with heavy use of editing to create the necessary back story of our protagonists. The story itself was a bit of a stretch, but the fantastical coincidences jibe well for its purposes. At the end, the notion of urban warfare will be forever changed in the hearts of its viewers. Merci beaucoup.

Robin Hood (2010)

http://content7.flixster.com/movie/1...121829_pro.jpg

Following the recent success of some superhero flicks the idea was fine to go with a reboot style or telling the origin story of a great hero but I think they spend too much time on the middle of the story and thus results a bit of mess at the end.

Though it wasn't bad but I don't get the idea how come this series needed a this sorta period prequel then? It was for the hype, I guess. Then they could go for another one setting in a distant future (like Jason X)...Ginger Snaps Back - The Future Fright!:D

Watched Jaws 2 the other night. It may not be as good as the first but it's still very enjoyable. And let's not forget, it is leaps and bounds above the rest.

What ever Happened to Baby Jane.

I'd never seen this film before. I never knew how tragic it was! I mean, I shouldn't like the character of Jane for all the terrible things she's done, but I do. I just feel so bad for her, especially as she begins to lose her mind. She's just an ill old woman who's been overcome with jealousy and resentment, and yet she wants to be a child. I mean, the scene at the end where she dances is just heartbreakingly poignant.

Death Factory
The film has an interesting lot aand the execution is decent, but the acting was a bit lack luster and I didn't find myself really hating the bad guy as much as they were trying to make me hate him (and they tried really hard, trust me). Another thing is I didn't really care about the protagonist after about a half an hour into which usually comes as a turn off. Death scenes were meh at best and the overall narrative just felt odd or rushed.

Star Trek - Generations
I don't usually like the movies, but always thought this one was pretty decent.
Good villain with a good "evil" plot, played by a good actor...I think that's largely what made the film for me.
That and, it doesn't really "tie in" to the whole ST universe, you could watch this without any prior knowledge of the series IMO.

Oliver and Company
Actually the first time I've seen it since watching it at the cinema as a kid...got it on VHS at an op-shop for 50c...pretty fun animated movie with a great musical score and soundtrack, pretty solid voicework all around.

Excellent twisted bittersweet comedy from the genius brain of Chris Morris. Four (pretty clueless) British Muslims try to get their Jihad on. The show is stolen by the the white Islamic convert who has to be more extreme to prove his dedication to the cause..

Excellent stuff,,,

Strangers on a Train (1951). This Hitchcock thriller is simply one of his best. Working on so many levels, when it is not symbolic it is masterfully artistic, or maybe understated, then again polemic and malevolent. The story examines a fascinating take on murder and builds it into a thrillingly intense carnival ride, literally. There are so many memorable scenes that it is almost exhausting to watch. Robert Waker was absolutely sublime in his nefarious role of the antagonist, a minacious doppelganger of Bill Murray. He is pitted against the perfectly wooden Farley Granger, the perfect patsy, a stranger on a train. The direction was spectacular, a Hitchcockian classic. The camera does not disappoint, with the most grim moment of the flick capturing the action from a wonderfully beautiful POV. The ending, with the ultimate unfurling, was perfect. Merci beaucoup.

Machete (2010)

Now, I still haven't seen The Expendables...but as far as throwback, over-the-top action flicks go, I can't see anything getting much better than this. Amazing cast, crazy action...bat-shit insane from start to finish. I've heard people complain about it being "too talky" in places, but even when the action did slow down I was completely entertained.

A lot of people here will really enjoy this movie. I had a fucking blast.

The Last Exorcism (2010)

Not bad. Was really impressed with the performances (particularly Patrick Fabian in the lead), but the story was kind of all over the place. Had some tense moments and a great ending, but not much else really stands out.

Tears of the Sun (2003). The beginning of this flick strongly hinted of an unbelievable and contrived story. In truth, this formula continued, but the fashion in which the story unraveled made up for this stench of Hollywood. In essence, it turned into am entertaining flick that dealt with some rather disquieting facets of human nature whilst trying to establish some overall message as to the duty of first world peoples to act in the affairs of others. Quite an endeavor, and to have done so in an entertaining fashion allots for its fanfare. The acting was solid, with Monica Belluci's role as the "package" that just happened to be wonderfully hot a real delight. Director Antoine Fuqua does a solid job here, but the mainstream feel of this flick a tad disappointing. The saving grace for this "nose towards the sheepish general public" was the audacity shown towards the depiction of the atrocities as they were being committed, which were brutal and far from entertaining. Merci beaucoup.

A Britt mediocre, low budget effort that tried to be Right at your Door meets with The Crazies, but didn't that much succeed as a film overall. Not sure whether for the muffled voices or the regional accents, didn't get the quick but vital explanation of the whole thing.

The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009)

http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/939/alicecreed1.jpg

With only three characters & as set on very limited locations, I think the director did a pretty convincing job to put things all together in a pretty exact fashion that a tensed & situation driven film required to have & entertain its audience. Overall, it's a gripping & fun kidnap-thriller with nice dose of nudity and the 'matter' of love & relationship;)(yeah...the unexpected twist comes at the middle of the story). Recommended.

I have always enjoyed the first two Major League films (The first in particular is a favourite),the third was mildly entertaing but still clearly the weakest of the three.

Major League I - 7/10, ML II - 6/10, ML III - 5/10.

Dummy

A quirky romantic comedy that manages to make standard plot conventions seem interesting and fun. Really excellent performances from Adrian Brody, Illeana Douglas and Mila Jovovich. I really enjoyed it- and Brody wasn't too bad as a ventriloquist.

cheebacheeba 09-07-2010 02:35 AM

Anchorman.
Now, I've been here and there about Will Ferrell...and after actually avoiding watching a lot of the films he was in, on account of his humour not really being my style in SNL and the like...though I saw some that I ended up liking of late...Stranger than Fiction was pretty cool, I didn't hate "Land of the Lost" (IMO a more watchable version of the recent "Journey"), Blades of Glory was alright, and I actually think Step Brothers was by far one of the better comedy films I've seen in the last five years.
I'm a bit the same when it comes to Steve Carrell, I actually HATE the office, though I think he did a great job in the "Get Smart" movie, and was likeable in Horton.
So, this movie having had both of them in it is something I avoided like the plague at the time, though these days I'm a little more receptive of their works.
So my friend, who seems to be one of the many people who are simply in love with Anchorman has been trying to convince me to watch it for a while...he dropped over his copy.

My thoughts?
Not good.
I actually turned it off after about 45 minutes...which in all honesty was about a half hour longer than I wanted to give it, but I tried.
I cannot enjoy a film where every few moments I think that it's a comedy film made to entertain stupid people. I know what people say about humour like this...well IMO It's not clever, intentional in its stupidity or otherwise...in my opinion it falls pretty flat, and I actually found myself bored most of the time.
To me this is a prime (another) example of essentially a SNL skit dragged on way too long. Just could not find anything to like about this movie. So yeah I switched it off wondering why the holy fuck, people still rave about this shit...
Now, for those who think I'm just ripping into films that are dumb for the sake of it, well, I sat through Kung Pow at least all the way, terrible as it was, this film was simply incapable of retaining any interest.
It's like kids wrote it, in all honesty - What an embarrassing waste of time.

Iron Man II: I really liked it. From the opening scene to the end this movie just had a completely over the top, hugely epic feel to it. Given what Stark is like, even moreso in this film, I thought it fit perfectly.

Absolute perfection. Everything you could want in a low budget exploitation picture. Violence, mayhem, gore, guns, hot chicks and of course, hot chicks with guns.
Robert Rodriquez delivers all that he promised. Damn! I hope there's a sequel.

Bangkok Dangerous: Nic Cage plays Nic Cage playing an utterly unbelievably bad actor trying to be a bad ass assassin. When viewed like that it's not a bad movie. Nic Cage does such a great job playing himself being a terrible actor. Otherwise though, bad movie is bad.

Shit! Shit! SHit!

Yes it was shit, nothing like the 80's throwback that I expected. What was the fucking point of Arnie even being in it?

Jet Li get's treated like a tool, Dolph goes bad then good again, give me a break, this is just a piece of shit for Sly to try make some money back he lost on the last Rambo, which by the way is actually awesome and should have done really well!

Forget the 3D, it is crap and has no effect, now think tits and ass and gore, are you with me?

Well if you're not don't bother watching this.

This is an awesome over done version of an underrated classic, they should have left the 3D aspect out as they didn't really utilize it, but I guess it helps it sell. Otherwise, it is one of the best horror flicks this year, just for the fact it doesn't hold back, it lets it all hang loose and get eaten.
