A Dirty Shame
Later day John Waters comedy with Tracy Ulman and Johnny Knocksville. It was funny and I laughed plenty of times, but there just isn't that sense of Anarchy and true perversion Waters had in his early years. I miss that. Great soundtrack though, full of dirty jungle music from the 50s. |

The Hurt Locker (2008). i can't believe that this flick won so many Oscars. The acting, direction, and camera work were all solid, but the story itself was contrived to absurd. What was Hollyweird thinking? Ashe.

Defendor: Totally not what I was expecting. I thought it would be a slapstick, rolling on the floor kind of comedy. Not at all. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty damn funny, but it's also quite dark and brooding. I would highly recommend this one.

The Wolfman [2010]...not bad..some good gore....a bit overboard on the ending..some crappy CGI...some not so.
From Paris With Love----John Travolta at his over-the-top best....put the mind on hold and enjoy the action. |
Kick Ass
Extremely entertaining subversion of the genre. The violence was fantastically staged and the soundtrack selection/placement added a neat touch. 9/10 |
Alien Raiders (2008). Like the slow kid in class, these guys didn't have it takes to get a high score, but instead you end up cheering them on for all of their hard work to get that passing score. This was obviously a low budget flick, but instead of degenerating into a low-class splatter-fest, everyone took this one seriously, gave there best efforts, and in turn churned out a most enjoyable sci-fi. The acting was rather good for such an affair, with not a slouch in the bunch. First time director Ben Rock shows that he is more than adept at getting a story to unfold with perfect pacing and such. Inventive camera work is used to compensate for lack of dough, but this does not detract us from the story. All in all this is a worthy flick that should serve as another testament as to what filmmakers can achieve with a limited number of clams. Merci beaucoup.

Kaw- a pretty decent killer raven movie, well there infected with like a mad cow meat an makes them go mad but still a good decent flick worth watching

Book of Eli: Starting off I was quite excited. The way the movie was filmed/post-processed for about the first third was amazing. Then it seems to just throw that style out and go full Hollywood. The story is pretty good, but there are some massive holes in the plot. Ignore those and it's a fun enough watch though.

Those looking for a mindless CGI actioner will not be disappointed. Jerry Bruckheimer pulls off a "Sinbad movies"-clone, in terms of production values and cinematography. Jake fills the Prince's shoes quite effectively, and Gemma is very charming. The rest are forgettable, which is a letdown. Half-decent script, adept direction, loud background music...and CGI. Not much substance, but plenty of style and brimming with effects. Fans of the games, like me, will be very disappointed. A lost potential, but still a watchable flick. Get some popcorn and put your brains on the shelf. All in all, a perfect summer blockbuster, and a far-from-perfect game adaptation. * * ½ |
Salem's Lot (1979)
http://content8.flixster.com/movie/25/59/255926_pro.jpg Awesome! One of the superb modern day vampire tales, very creepy & atmospheric. >>: A Pet Sematary (1989) http://content9.flixster.com/movie/1...891447_pro.jpg Though it was my probably 3rd/4th viewing of the film after a long time but still the death scene of little Gage is very upsetting to watch, cause it was wonderfully done. >>: A- Warlock (1991) http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/mov/video/i.../84/133284.jpg Decently funny. >>: B Night of the Living Dead (1990) http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/mov/video/i.../27/143527.jpg >>: A- |
Pi: Intrusive, claustrophobic exploration of an obsessed mind. Probably not half as intelligant as it would have you believe but its a very well shot and enjoyable Sci-Fi.
Alice in Wonderland: I don't really have any previous experiance with the original story/ stories, beyond the sort of knowledge that one collects naturally over the years. I probably knew enough about Alice to tell people I read the book as a child, but I really have no memory of ever reading it. So I went into this one with pretty much no expectations and still managed to feel like I was watching something well removed from the original source material. I could be well wrong here though. Nothing about this movie managed to draw me in, at any point. I know I'm not exactly the target audiance, but I didn't find it engaging at all. Acting was so-so and the story was pretty much a by the numbers fantasy- action film. The absurd seemed contrived and flat and the 'big' action moments were pretty small. SPOILER BELOW: As I said above, I'm not all that familiar with the source material, but is this supposed to be a story about a 19 year old girl? Any sort of childlike innocence and sense of adventure, I was expecting to find, was lost right there. I found the whole experiance kinda cringeworthy, right up to the point Alice came trotting out in full body armour for the final battle. Of course she wasn't wearing a helmet, we need to see that pretty face, don't we? |

Been on a bit of a Robert Redford binge lately. In the past few days I've watched:
Brubaker (1980) I enjoyed this one quite a bit. It sort of ruined the effect a tad when after I realized it wasn't actually completely based on a true story, as I had been told it was by some people, but it was still a great film. The first twenty minutes or so are actually terrifying. Prison movies in general freak me out, but the scenes in this were brutally effective. Good performances, and an interesting story. -7.5/10. The Way We Were (1973) I like this film a lot more than I was expecting to. Redford, and Streisand both give great performances, and Pollack's direction was fantastic as usual. One of the best romance films I've seen in a long time, not cheesy or phooney, or anything like that. Damn good ending too. -8.5/10. Jeremiah Johnson (1972) I actually loved this film. I'm not gonna say it's perfect, there are some scenes that seem a bit out of place with the rest of the film, but just something about it really drew me in. The landscapes were beautiful, and Redford's performance of Jeremiah was fantastic. -9/10. |

"Soloman Kane" (2010)
Vert well made adaptation of Robert E. Howard's pulp hero. Plenty of action and supernatural bad guys. "C.H.U.D." A crap classic! One of the best of the worst of 1980's cinema. "The Warriors" See above comment "Escape From New York" My all time favorite John Carpenter movie. A classic. |
Dread (2009)
Decent enough. Suffered from some awkward dialogue and weak acting here and there, but the concept held my interest and they managed some really great moments near the end. Still...was anyone else reminded of Patholgy? Far from identical, but lots of similarities (though Pathology turned out much, much better). |

Amityville II: The Possession (1982). This prequel of The Amityville Horror is a brave take on the events that actually occurred. The first act was pretty darn creepy, the second was rather brutal, and the third was an enjoyable rip-off of another horror classic. The acting was decent enough, though over-acted at times. The direction was pretty solid, but that camera work was wonderful, at times almost paying homage to the brilliance of Argento's fabulously roaming lens. The special effects were decent for the era, though much of the actual creepiness of this entry relied on on less industrious techniques. Overall worth a watch. Ashe.

Double Indemnity (1944). This is simply one of the best film noirs ever produced, and to think that it took eight years of writing and rewriting to get Hollywood's approval gives one a start that this film may have never been. Of course, all of that work eventually culminated into this magnificent piece of work. The acting was simply astounding, with chemistry that was palpable not only between the hopeful romantics, but also between worker and boss. Even the body language seemed to emote that larger than life feel that screamed in pain at the thought that this flick will at some point have to come to an end. Every scene was a delight to watch, and that dialog between Stanwych and MacMurray was sublime. This story was simple and perfect, and the would-be flaw in the story turns out to instead have been a subtle element for character development and not a flaw at all. The direction and camera work and lighting were all perfect, with the end result a film that might just be the tops for the era. Ashe.

Frontière(s)
Engaging enough storyline. Although I found the inclusion of Nazis to be a bit clichéd. There were also far too many plot holes to really take the movie too seriously. I seem to remember people putting Frontière(s) in the same category as Martyrs or À l'intérieur, but I really didn't see that at all. It's somewhat brutal, but nowhere near as much as Martyrs or À l'intérieur. It was an alright watch, but it just seemed a bit weak overall given the atmosphere they were trying to go for. |
Splice- I'm really surprise I haven't seen anyone post about this yet. Such big names attached, I figured everyone on here would have gone to see it opening night or something. See recommended movies thread for more.

The Best Man
Henry Fonda & Cliff Robertson battle it out as political candidates roughly based on Adlai Stevenson and Nixon. As absolutely relevant today as it was back when it was made. Death Sentence Interesting. Keven Bacon is great. Sidesteps all the moral issues inherant in the plot. |
Jaws (1975)
Videodrome (1983) |
Perfect Creature (2006). This relatively low-budget affair hits many high notes in style and application. First off, the atmosphere that is created is simply wonderful; it simply blends many differing eras to create the perfect backdrop for this story to unfold. Bleak and drained of life, full advantage is taken of the setting to create a world where the unlikely is most believable. The acting is strong enough, with some pretty great performances here and there. The story itself threatens to turn Hollywood weak, but never really does as such. Instead, it blends sci-fi and horror into a dilapidated tapestry of a plagued-ridden world of suffering. The direction is competent, and the camera work and computer-generated imagery captures an era best left unearthed. Overall, this can almost be seen as a transcendental B-movie on the bounce. Ashe.

Are you a fan of the new wave of french horror cinema? Do you love your horror tales with a generous dose of splatstick (yes that's a word I invented...I hope) humor and plenty of gore? Do you want to see a riveting tale of cops and robbers take a frighteningly gorific turn? If the answer is yes to all of the above, watch it asap. Then come back and rave about it to everyone else. Highly recommended. Chrono, NE, Fort, Jenna, Psycho, Return, Alky, Newb, Zwoti, Rayne...everyone else reading this, hunt this movie down and blind buy it wherever you find it. Trust me, you won't be sorry. |

Don't think the dvd is out yet. Find it at a Film Festival or theater near you.
I think this one will come under the Dimension Extreme label soon, ala Inside. |
George Romero's Survival of the Dead
It was okay. It almost seemed like the zombies were an afterthought, a prop used to tell the story of two feuding families. |
