The Human Centipede-overrated
Guinea Pig; Devils Experiment- one of the few films that I have found extremely unsettling recently, so had the desired effect.
Guinea Pig; The Android of Notre Dame-Absolutely dire.
Watching Grotesque later.

"All Hell Broke Loose" (2009)
-David Carradine

Plot: IMDB
After serving his county in the Civil War as a skilled sharpshooter, Will Drayton moved West in search of employment using his shooting skills. He ends up with the wrong type of people as a deadly assassin.

Phantom's Review: Oh my God. what an awful film. Total amateur hour. Bad acting, bad action and a lame plot. The late David Carradine looks bored. Avoid at all cost.

Diary of the Dead (2007). Lots of different opinions on this one. While there were a great many scenes (goldfish, the Amish guy) there were also some pretty unrealistic ones. The characters themselves were mostly too stupid to have lived as long as they did. The concept itself was pretty great. What probably killed it was too much attention paid to propagating its overall message instead of just making a great movie and letting its message shine through. Worth a watch to pay homage to Romero, and ya have a 50%chance of liking it. Late.

Nikutai no mon (Gate of Flesh) (1964)

An enthralling, brutal pulp-drama as well as a potent commentary on a particular time in history; a gang of prostitutes makes a ruthless existence among the steaming mess of crime and debasement that is WWII-devastated Tokyo. One of Suzuki's greatest works; a subversive pseudo-exploitation masterpiece, complete with his hyper-stylized flair. If you haven't seen this yet, absoluuuuutely do it.

The Last House on the Left (1972). This classic shocker from Wes Craven deserves all the notoriety that it has received. Though a bit abrupt, the documentary feel of this flick makes for a gritty and realistic experience. The down and nasty scenes are portrayed in a cold, mean, and believably humiliating fashion. The acting was pretty decent for what it was, with Hess and Lincoln putting forth tremendous performances. The first two acts of the story itself, loosely based on a Bergman classic, were pretty solid, though the third act was a little more than contrived. Overall, this one will definitely leave a bad taste in your mouth, but it's a bitterness that the horror fan is only too happy to shell out hard-earned bucks in order to savor. Ashe.

You should watch House By The Edge Of The Park next. It's a better film IMO. Hitch-Hike is worth a watch too makes for a nifty David Hess trilogy.

Semi Pro

A few funny bits here and there but I lost interest.

The Road: Quality film. A drab, post- apocalyptic story. It doesn't have a particularly hard hitting or original theme, but it really is a well crafted film. The film really captures the grim reality of the situation. Beautifully shot creating a desolate, grim feel, with some quality post- apocalyptic imagery. Everything within the movie is totally devoid of colour with the exception of flashbacks of the life before, which are cramed with vibrant colours and beauty. Too much of a slow burner to make it an easy one to recommend, but I loved it.

The Men Who Stare At Goats: Thought it was pretty funny. Great concept, packed with funny scenes didn't really go anywhere but it was a fun ride.

Plan Nine from Outer Space: Accidently brilliant.

psycho d 05-30-2010 04:51 AM

Darkman (1990). Another fun entry from Sam Raimi, this one definitely has that comic book feel to it, though it was not based on such a series. Raimi's definitive style is definitely apparent here, with over-the-top absurdity being most entertaining. Liam Neeson plays his part with aplomb, and Larry Drake's portrayal of the villain was just as playful. The story was decent, but it was of course the direction and visuals that make this such a distinguished effort. Overall this was quite an entertaining endeavor. Ashe.

The way PR3SSUR3 did the autopsy of this film I have nothing to add about it. It was my 3rd or 4th time watch as lately I have have decided to re watch some horror films that I have seen such a long time ago or whatever the reason as now often fail to remember some parts of them properly. Moreover, just for a personal level of curiosity as now a days I have managing some time for my compilation of "Best Hundred Horror Films that I have seen so far" there are some more films that I think need to watch again sometime soon. Hopefully this project will come to an end (temporarily...as there are still some good number of films that I haven't seen yet & have no idea when I can...like Legend of Hill House, The Devils, Spoorloos etc.:() within a month or two and thinking to start the countdown here at HDC in the last 100 days of this year.

The Mothman 05-30-2010 05:44 AM

watched the first part of Philosophy Of A Knife. overly long, boring, and amateurish. didnt live up to the hype at all.

Posher778 05-30-2010 08:35 AM

Abominable (Syfy)- 7/10 I'm not sure if this was a syfy original or not, but if it was, it was better than most of them. The monster looked absolutely hysterical, but the film itself was made with almost a Hitchcock style to it. Basically a handicapped man moves back home to the mountains, and his house neighbors one other house, high up in the mountains. He's bored in a wheel chair so he watches the girls that are vacationing in the next door house through binoculars. Add in a giant monster snowman, and it was pretty fun.

Also, if nothing else, most everyone here will think the last 5 minutes are hilarious.

Jennifer’s Body – Too quipy, not enough of any one thing. Not bad, just blah.

The Box – All the elements of a good thriller, but it didn’t quite coalesce.

Pandorum - Who knows? Not good, so I turned it off halfway through.

The Night Of The Living Dead 90- A fairly decent remake of the original which I love. A sort of new take on the story with a new "Barbara" a more in your face an less helpless version of her character. All around I thought the movie was great but the selling point for me, was Tony Todd acting, he did an amazing job in this story. He brings alot to the character an story in general. Sure theres some zombies in the movie where you can tell there plastic"The Fat Farmer in the house near the start for sure" but thats not really a problem to me. All around great movie I give it a 4.5 out of 5

Great film. I actually saw that one before the original when I was younger.

Funny Games (1997). This is the original which was then copied almost to a T in Haneke's American remake. At first glance this appears to be a mean and pointlessly violent movie, but then Haneke turns the tables on the viewer, forcing the viewer to take some responsibility. The acting was solid, the direction was incredible, and the message was profound. This is the one flick that Haneke formally admits to intentionally provoking the viewer, and he does so with aplomb. Ashe.

Always liked that, but I find not too many people know what i'm talking about when I mention it...

Legion - Not bad. Interesting effects. Might be fun to show to some bible bashers?

Triangle - Started pretty slow and turned out quite alright. I like this one. Though the decision/scene to *spoiler* keep driving after the bird towards the end seemed to make little sense when the loop factor comes into play...I mean c'mon, is this happening NOT what just happened prior to the film? The bird would have been warning enough...I get it...stuck in a loop...but it just seemed like if she could change things at all as she did during the boat scenes, wouldn't she have done the post-boat stuff slightly differently?
But yep, other than a few small issues a pretty good sci-fi-horror-ish effort there.

"The Daybreakers" (2009)

Plot: IMDB
In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.

Phantom's Review: Much to my surprise, this was actually a pretty decent film. The film had a nice look to it and the story was different. I enjoyed it.

Youth in Revolt.
I enjoyed it "ok", had some weirdness to it that I liked, and thought while not over the top it was humourous enough. Wonder if Cera will ever get cast as someone over high-school age though...

psycho d 06-01-2010 05:11 AM

Asphalt Jungle (1950). This classic film noir is arguably one of the greatest for the era, if not of all time. The characters make for a great story. Each of them is human to a fault, with strengths that drive them forward and vices which bring them down. Each and every character was cast with perfection, and while each is important, Sterling Hayden and Sam Jaffe are the central characters, polemic and perfect together. The acting was top-notch, and Marilyn Monroe's pivotal yet minor role was no exception. The story was of the perfect caper gone foul, as are all good capers. The direction was simply fabulous. The camera work was compelling, with perfectly composed close-ups that more than bring these wonderful humans to life. Merci beaucoup.

Agreed. Not a particularly good movie, but it's hard to criticize a film that sets out to be a gratuitous exploitation flick, and then delivers gratuitous exploitation.

I like 3/4 of it but the ending was just to dumb for me, even for the type of film it was. Though I must admit Camaro is one of my favorite female roles in a long time.

The God Who Wasn't There (2005)

Obviously very biased, but still an interesting doc. Some of his info seemed a bit shaky, but some of the interviews were fascinating. Only problem is that it really doesn't try to give us anything new: I didn't see anything here that would make anyone rethink their beliefs, and as an agnostic myself, it didn't really present anything that I didn't already know - I'm sure die-hard atheists must have been bored to death by this.

Still, the interviews made it worthwhile. Not a bad watch if you're into this kind of thing.
