Martin (1977). Martin was a lanky and awkward sort of character, which works perfect to shatter the myths of his existence. Newcomer John Amplas does a splendid job in his pained portrayal of this untoward character who feels real and yet unreal. The rest of the cast does a great job setting the scene for Martin to run amuck and do that which he does best, which is to awkwardly terrorize the community. The ending was unmistakably perfect. This was a nice deviation for the genre, and this cult classic by George Romero should have made more of a mark on horror fans.

What a fantastic film. I am getting really impressed by these masterpieces of French cinema. The whole film has a subtle underlayer of suspense running through, and the backdrop of the French Resistance during Nazi occupation conveys a very strong message of anti-war sentiments. The background shots are absolutely awesome, the direction crisp and the actors are brilliant. This has been hailed by critics as a lost masterpiece, and I couldn't agree more. Return, Alky, Fort, Psycho d, Chrono, NE, Elvis, Zwoti, anyone else loving French film noir...see if you can find this near you. Trust me totally and blind-buy Army of Shadows asap. |
Got Derek to watch Halloween for the first time. He liked it.

Last seen: Dancer in the Dark (2000). Lars von Trier scores another ten with this brilliant tear-jerker. The beginning has an almost amateurish, home movie feel to it, suckering the viewer to stick his chin out only to receive the requisite sucker punch. This lugubrious and exhausting flick was thankfully punctuated by much needed emotional breathing space. The acting was second to none, with Bjork spilling forth a compelling portrayal of a blue collar mother willing to go to absolute extremes in order to give her son the chance for a decent life. Lars extracts ever bit of talent from his supporting cast of Catherin Deneuve, David Morse, Peter Stormare, and company. The handheld camera work by Lars is fabulously ingenious. As simple story really, it unravels with aplomb as not one scene is unnecessary or contrived, with a riveting conclusion that should serve to move the most phlegmatic of souls. Ashe. derek |
Martin [1977] - Ages since i`ve seen this flick. A darn good modern-vampire!

NOES 2010
Not surprisingly, I the original 80's version was preferable ...this Freddy while ok just didn't seem dark or quite sinister enough compared to the original as featured in #1-#3 before he became a complete stand-up comedy act. I mean sure, he would be a scary fucker to be confronted with no doubt, but comparatively speaking...not at all. Some interesting ideas were there, including an alternative twist on his back-story and how he was killed etc, some re-made/slightly different scenes (hit and miss)...and during the "current" events, the concept of micro-sleeps was introduced which I thought was one of the stand-out points in the film... Though - atmosphere was lacking in my opinion, it relied a lot on jumps. *Spoilers in white* But...no centipede? No "this is God"? No fingers chopped off or cutting into his own guts? No dead-friends-face-mask? I thought of all the things to recreate those might have made an appearance...though yeah, this kind of shit is what I loved about the first. One thing I really missed was the totally surreal dream scenes as featured throughout the entire old series...like where they were clearly dreaming - in most cases in this new one the dreams were most of the time just the same scenario as reality only telling any real difference when the villain appeared. I think he laughed WAY too much throughout too. Overall it was "ok" and "not bad", and an interesting take on the Krueger tale. Though I did not greatly enjoy it. In my honest opinion the NOES related scenes in FvsJ were more atmospheric and well suited to the character. |

ANOES Remake
4/10 |

... Speaking of Nazis... Finally saw Dead Snow. Thought it was really good, though I think that a lot of the humor in the dialogue got lost in translation for me, but the gore is simply fantastic. Plus, it's Nazi Zombies. I mean - AWESOME. 4/5. Recommended. |
I've been meaning to hire Dead Snow. Read some reviews that said it was pitiful but that never stops me when it comes to horror flicks.
------- The Crazies I liked this one more the first time round but it's still a solid film. I was thinking it would've been great to have seen this before Dawn Of The Dead because it does throw a somewhat of a shadow over it with its similarities. Wanted to watch this again before I checked out the remake. Felon This really took me by surprise and I really enjoyed it. Gritty and downbeat prison film. I thought the reason for the main character going to jail was a lot more interesting than the usual films of this type. Sure there was the usual cliches but this was entertaining as hell. I forgot how great Stephen Dorff is as an actor... totally underated, he really outshines the majority of actors working today. |

----------------------------------------- Date Night (2010) Eh, it's okay. Pretty standard stuff, really. The funniest bits seem to be the ad-libbed dialogue. Some pretty decent action sequences though that I really wasn't expecting. |
[Lesbian] Vampire Killers (2009). What's not to like? The title says it all, and those that did not appreciate the wicked humor of this one simply do not like horror comedies. This witty little comedy never takes itself seriously and never strays from its intended purpose, which is to make the viewer laugh; and laugh i did. Pretending to be a dick flick, instead LVK uses this notion upon which to make light of itself. The acting was fun for what it was, with relentlessly humorous dialog that came off as natural. The direction was spot on for its intended purpose, and the camera work and lighting gave an almost musical feel to this laughable flick. Overall this was a very fun and lighthearted horror comedy. Merci beaucoup.

Vacancy (2007). Instead of relying on cheap scares, torture, and gore, this little flick instead gives chance to some decent character development and then places our endearing characters into harm's way. Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale do their part and make for a believably troubled couple whose marriage is unraveling. As well, their response to the misfortune ahead are more in line with what normal people would do, normal people which seem conspicuously absent in most horror flicks. Frank Whaley's part is simply fantastic with the only complaint being a lack of screen time. The story itself had a nice Hitchcockian feel to it, more of an homage than a crutch. The direction and camera work was solid. The sense of grounded frame composures which devolved into some dynamic hand held scenes was perfect for effect. The sense of claustrophobia that was instilled by some of the shots was almost palpable. The denouement left much to be desired, but it was not so bad as to detract the viewer from checking this one out. Ashe.

All the Alien films- my son has decided he likes them
Antichrist- Ouch it made me squirm big time, very odd but enjoyable x |
Fires on the Plain AKA Nobi (1959). This harrowing Japanese classic jump starts at what should seem to be the lowest point of a soldier's life. That it is the the apex of the film is a hint at the tribulations to come. In fact, this might just be the greatest portrayal of the squalid nature of war. The protagonist of our little flick, by way of some serious method acting, starved himself until he collapsed on set, shutting the production down for two weeks until he got his strength back. All of the actors here were intentionally underfed to create a more than realistic appearance of starvation in the soldier actors. The story is not of your typical type, but instead is more of a snapshot of the downward spiral of the plight of downcast, neglected Japanese soldiers in the Philippines towards the end of WWII. The acting was strong, the direction competent and daring. Both pitiful and awe-inspiring, this is not a flick for tender hearts or those of weak stomachs. Ashe.

Just watched "Dead of Night" that I got from NetFlix. I'm a big fan of the anthologies, but not so much this one, lol, Oh well.
Three stories in this one, It's from 1977 and the stories are directed by Dan Curtis and written by Richard Matheson. Unfortunately, they stink in the way they are presented. Story one is "Second Chances" about a car that travels back in time. Thought this could have been better. Story two is "Bobby" about a boy who died and comes back to life. "Trilogy Of Terror 2" had the same story in it, and executed it more effectively IMO. Story three is "No Such Thing As A Vampire" and this one seems like it was straight out of an HBO "Tales From The Crypt" episode. Only there wasn't much scare to match the camp, lol. All in all, 2 out of 5. Just because I love anthologies Generous score, really, Skip this one if it comes up, |
The descent: part 2 Perfect ending!!!

Grey Gardens (1975)
One of the Maysles' great "direct cinema" works. The Beales (especially the strangely enchanting Little Edie) are two of the most fascinating and tragic subjects ever captured by the lens. |
Deathwatch (2002)--7/10
It was a bit predictable. It did seem to lumber along in places. But the gritty trench setting worked well for me. You could almost feet the trench foot setting in. |

Close to cinematic perfection. Highly recommended to anyone who hasn't seen it yet. |
The Wolfman (2010)
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/4672/thewolfmannew.jpg The unnecessary new plot twist damaged the whole nice build up of the first half. Otherwise it could be a pretty good remake. >>: B |

Last Seen: Time of the Wolf (2003). The French have that uncanny ability to take ideas that have been done to death and freshen them up my merely making the concept seem painfully real. This one, with its documentary feel, is no exception. The setting is in fact perfect for many a horror flick, but in this the horror is the setting itself. Instead, it is the daily trials and tribulations of survival that make for such a gripping scenario. And the savior here might not be the craftiness of man, but might be found by embracing humanity. The acting was simply wonderful, with stunning performances by by child and adults alike. Supporting actress Beatrice Dalle of Inside fame gives chance to one incredible scene, but the performance by Isabelle Huppert as a woman on the brink of collapse was astounding. The direction by Haneke was sublime. With some wonderfully drawn out shots and removed camera work, every bit of this flick works to support the rest. Not really a fun movie, its stark reality is entertaining though difficult. Merci beaucoup. derek |
