my list is at 80 and counting so far....

I have 61 so far, but almost all of it is horror.

Think we need to give some space for horror/exploitation to accomodate Tetsuo, Ichi and other related flicks.

I d like to hear what others say on this. Of course, I m still very much in doubt regarding Oldboy. Where do we actually draw the line here?

I really don't see why Oldboy should be on the list?

Sure it's one of the best aisan movies out there, but it's no way near horror.

The same can be said about Lady Vengeance i'm sure.

Another Anime i'd like to add is "Fist of the north star". Because it's grotesquely violent and bloody. And quite good actually.

See, I would have to argue with you here. I think that Oldboy and Lady Vengeance most certainly qualify for horror. With Oldboy, Park is exploring Gothic Horror (dickensian horror) to its extremities. It's horrifying. It's pulp. And it's iconic. It's the struggle of the human condition against itself and against all odds. And there are certain twists in the film that are honestly horrifying.

It's the same argument that Doc uses for Ichi - It's as much psychological horror as it is pulp action. I would definitely consider Oldboy horror.

You can't deny Godzilla's status of influential monster movie icon.

I also liked a lot of Shimizu's ideas in this one, especially because they seemed new and original and not JUST rehash, as i thought was the case with his former 2 ju-on movies.

Yes, maybe the story itself was a little weak, but then again, the story is pretty much the same in all the ju-on and Grudge movies. I watch them for Shimizus creative mind.

Then why the hell did it look like ass?

I don't think that it looked any higher budget than the first one. I thought that the ghosts and special effects looked painfully cheap and tacky where in the first one and in Rinne I thought that the ghosts and folly work were both brilliantly well-done.

Ju-on 2 was just painful to watch.

Ju-On 2 is needlessly slow. It has only one redeeming scene. As for Godzilla...well, you know my sentiments on that. The original is one of the best films about the horrors of war ever made and the others create a world of fantasy and bizarre action that you can't get anywhere else. Most of them do not have strong horror elements, but Godzilla versus Hedorah features sentient space garbage that melts people, a Lovecraftian filth god that threatens to absorb the earth. It's awesome, surreal and has one great monster.

Elvis_Christ 02-22-2009 04:36 PM

Godzilla is great. Part of its charm is its awfulness.

You do know we're talking about Ju-on: the grudge 2 and not Ju-on 2, right?

Your arguments stinks.

If we look at it like that EVERY movie is a horror movie in one way or another.

And how can we argue about Ichi? That movie is gory and gross as hell. Of course THAT's a horror movie.

roshiq 02-23-2009 01:36 AM

I have made a temporary list of 32 films that I have seen so far but there may be some adjustments (add/remove) before sending it to V.

I'm not sure whether it'd worth or not but will it be okay to make another list for recommendation (that I haven't seen yet!) based on the high ratings & positive reviews from different viewers & movie sites?

Oldboy is called a "bizarre, powerful and fucked up" thriller, and a part of The Vengeance trilogy of Chan Wook Park. I dont see it listed under horror anywhere.

But if we are leaving the window open by including Se7en and other similar thrillers under the genre's broad definition, Oldboy stakes a claim too.

So...what will it be?
