Antichrist (2009). My god, that was one of the most beautifully shot movies ever. The use of focus and aggressive or unorthodox panning were sublime. The scenes themselves were splendidly crafted, with appropriate use of violence, gore, and sex. The symbolisms worked to convey the sense of psychosis that we each harbor and keep stuffed down. The story was solid, but the way in which it was told made it compelling. The acting-superb! And of course the direction was wonderful. A compelling and moving flick that has little company in the category of beautifully disturbing. Mercie beaucoup.

Hated all the characters so I just couldn't get into this one. The scene with the outboard motor was cool but apart from that I thought this was just average. |

Shirley Jackson's The Lottery meets The Stepford Wives. After 20 minutes you have the whole thing figured out. There are no surprizes, and no reason to watch the next 80 minutes. |

I got it from my local video store, I think it said uncut or directors cut,but yes it was an Australian release. I returned it this morning, it's dollar day!!!! wooo hooo!!!!! What version should I see? American swing A fucking crap doco on plaitos the American swing club, just shot in typical American doco style with no substance at all. There were a few nice asses hanging about in the air, but that was the only highlight. 3/10 |
The Jacket (2005). A solid entry that defies a genre, The Jacket is not to be pidgeon-holed. The DVD cover description kept me from watching this for way too long. The story itself may have a couple of holes, but this only serves to allow for more interpretations. The acting was solid, with great performances by Adien Brody, Keira Knightlely, Daniel Craig and company. In one sense, it is a combo of movies already done, but the direction makes it a fresh entry. This will prove to be a moving experience with a timeline that is both refreshing and competent. Ashe.

Patton (1970)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...px-Patton1.jpg Wow! George C. Scott gives one of the finest & electrifying performances as the larger-than-life Patton. Also salute to Francis Ford Coppola and Edmund H. North for the brilliant script. >>: A Odd Man Out (1947) http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/1917/oddmanout.jpg Carol Reed's another flawless piece of cinematic achievement in almost every area. Excellent cast (even in small roles) & stunning cinematography made it absolute gem of a film that stands up well today, and is definitely a highlight of not just the year it was released, but that whole 'film noir' decade as a whole. To some extent I even think, it's superior to The Third Man. >>: A A Cold Night's Death (1973) Scientists Culp and Wallach suspect that there is someone other than their research primates inhabiting their polar station. An excellent TV movie from ABC. The bleak snowbound atmosphere and palpable anxiety between the two characters seems to be familiar with John Carpenter's THE THING, but here the action is almost exclusively psychological and there's nothing and nobody around to break the formidable tension. It's really astonishing how much is done with so little in this gem, just two men slowly unraveling a chilling mystery in a creepy research station. >>: A- When Night Falls (2007) http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/8...nightfalls.jpg A slow burn low budget suspense thriller from New Zealand. Not bad. >>: C+ |
Das Boot (extended version)
Its tense and claustrophobic, got some great performances (esp. Jurgen Prochnow as the captain) and looks great. Some of the cat and mouse scenes between the U-Boat and the destroyers of the British Navy hunting it are fantastic, the sound of the radar bouncing of the hull as the crew waits silently is especially memorable. Definitely a must see war film. |

"The hurt locker" 6-7/10
Wasn't blown away by it. And I can easily understand if Jeremy Renner doesn't win an Oscar even tho he played the role well. he just didn't do anything extraordinary, imo. |
Sedmikrįsky (Daisies) (1966)
A remarkable madcap adventure viewed through a kaleidoscope . Two young women decide that because the world is a mess, then they ought to make a mess themselves. The ensuing hijinks play out in a chaotic whirlpool of bright colors, playful camera work, and bizarre editing techniques. The end result is a weird, wonderful feminist film-poem that is a true time capsule for the mid-60s. |

Shutter Island.
Great atmosphere, nice performances all around, not a bad storyline. Though even while I found it creative enough, at this point I'd really like to see a horror/mystery/sci-fi movie, like...ever again...that didn't use the cookie cutter "surprise/twist" ending that they all seem to these days. |
Halloween 2
It was just stupid, IMO. I went in with an open mind- I'm not a Rob Zombie hater. I just thought it was a really cliche superficial script. |

The Elephant Man (1980)
This incredible entry from director great David Lynch takes him out of his normal weird auteur role and shows that he can create a simple and emotional masterpiece of the human spirit. This flick is at times difficult to watch, but then the next moment it will have you riveted to the screen, moved beyond emotion by the inner strength of a dignified soul ensconced within the frame of a monster. The irony in this flick is how such profound beauty is found in the unsightly industrial world by looking beyond the physical monstrosity that is our protagonist. The black and white film works wonderfully, and the cinematography is beautiful. The editing was rather dignified, which is perfect for this film. Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt helm their characters with aplomb. An absolute must see that will mine tears out of the most phlegmatic of beings. Mercie beaucoup.

Poughkeepsie Tapes-
I mostly found this movie boring. There was only one part I found scary and that was the weird crab walk while wearing a mask thing. As far as things that unsettled me, Stockholme Syndrome is sad. Over all though, overrated movie. 9- I never saw this in theatres because I heard so many people say they were disappointed with the plot. I however, loved it. It was so cute, and I got really attached to the characters to the point where I was verbally rooting for them. Animation was actually the only thing that slightly disappointed me. I didn't like the simplicity of their 3D models, or how I could see just how everything was textured. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou- Amazing. I suggest this for any indi-movie or BIll Murray fan. It's touching, and it's funny, and it's beautiful. Just wonderful. Bon-Cop, Bad-Cop- Had to analyze it for Canadian film class, and it's mediocre at best. Lots of stereotypes worth laughing at though, and their budget allowed for like... one explosion. |
Hush
Solid and tense British thriller in the vein of The Hitcher and Duel. Enjoyed this one but thought the ending was a bit of a let down. Still well worth your time. |
"The lovely bones" 5/10
Visually stunning, but boring storywise. And the girls soft narrator voice really annoyed me. |

The Bucket List First watch. Wanted it to be alot better than it actually was. Not to good, but watchable. |
District 9 (2009). Everything about this movie except one thing was pretty good. The effects were awesome, the story was solid enough. Production value was high. But the one thing that really detracted the experience was it tone. It was almost as if the movie itself was never really comfortable in its own skin and would hence keep changing persona's, again finding itself out of character and uncomfortable. That killed it for me.
The Wrestler (2008). This is a simple yet spectacular offering from Darren Aronofsky. The tale is simply a snapshot of an aging pro wrestler's life, a life that is mess outside of the ring. The wrestling aspect of this flick is treated honestly and with respect. Yeah, these guys choreograph the whole thing, but the fact that they love their work and abuse their bodies to please the audience is proof that they deserve more respect than they will ever get. Micky Rourke is absolutely perfect in this role, which might symbolize his own present life. He is definitely staging a comeback with this great performance. Marisa Tomei does a great job as well, and how they made this sweetheart to look so hardened in the beginning is beyond me. Evan Rachel Wood's limited screen-time was wonderful. Of course the direction was brilliant, and Darren deserves the credit for squeezing these terrific performances out of his actors. Simply a wonderful, touching, and believably honest flick. Mercie beaucoup. d |
