Late Phases 2014

Excellent! 8/10. The main actor who plays the blind veteran is simply phenomenal. I've been on the lookout for this one for a while, and I was not disappointed. Highly entertaining film.

THE ORPHANAGE (2007) We both really liked this-sumptious sets and pretty eerie throughout. Elements from THE SHINING, FRIDAY, THE 13th and THE HAUNTING (Geraldine Chaplin looks a lot like Claire Bloom here) add to the mix. Well worth seeing. ****

No, not really.

Then it's movies such as "Childs play", "Dolls", "Tourist Trap" and "Puppetmaster". Not bad movies, but not very creepy either.

What We do in the Shadows (2014) brilliantly funny NZ vampire mockumentary, if its showing near you go and see it!

Feed The Gods (2014)
Concept and setting were good but the script not so much.
Looked like it was filmed too dark but I think the problem was with the version I had.

The Way of the Wicked 2014

A bit of both The Omen and Twilight. A young girl living with her policeman father and and a young man who is not what he appears to be, a high school and a priest, all make for a mildly supernatural story.

Vinnie Jones is the father and I can happily watch him for hours.

The Possession

Not crazy scary, but it has quite a few good creepy moments, the cinematography was really good-looking, and the exorcism scene was fun too. I might get it on DVD.

A Tale of Two Sisters

I dunno what to think of this one. It was boring for the most part, but there were quite a few scary scenes.

I don't tend to go for films like this -- "back from mental institution, strange things happen at home". I've seen too many films of this format... listing along for an hour-30 with a token "bad thing happened in the past" ending.

I'm not going to see this. Would you tell me what were the "surprising revelations and shocking conclusion"?

Journey to the West 2013
8.5/10

Lots of fun. Director Stephen Chow brings a vibrant & high quality SFX cinematography to the film, along with humor, subtly, innocence & action. Highly recommend it, especially if you like getting a glimpse at other cultures.

(This is currently on Netflix with english subtitles, easy short readings).

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country 1991
7/10

Fairly compelling for the genre. Had a good dose of intrigue & excitement. Sure bet for Star Trek fans. Not surprised it was good as the director of Wrath of Khan directed this film.

Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack 2001
6/10

I gave this film another shot. Found it modestly compelling with three likable characters. The SFX are good. The action is only fair. The conclusion made sense within the film's context, but seemed a bit trudging & unsatisfying to me.

The Haunting in Connecticut

Jesus fucking christ, was this a disaster. I haven't laughed so hard at a horror movie in my life... and not in a good way! So many "scares" were actually hilarious because the loud sound the movie used was so cheesy. It was as if they typed "scary noises" into google and used some of those. The story also didn't make a lick of sense either. I will say that the acting and cinematography were great, but those were the only good things about this movie. Definitely don't recommend this unless you want a good laugh.

Baron Von Marlon 11-29-2014 09:55 PM

I watched all 3 Punisher movies the last couple of days.
So I'll put the first one here too even though it's from the eighties.

The Punisher (1989)
Not perfect but I'd think this version's the best when it comes to capturing the essence of The Punisher. I'd say this is the best one but it might be for sentimental and nostalgic reasons.

The Punisher (2004)
Not a bad movie but I wouldn't say it's a good Punisher movie.
The cast seems out of place and the atmosphere feels wrong.
My least favorite.

Punisher: Warzone (2008)
Perhaps the best one or sharing number 1 with the 1989 version.
Lots of kills, brutal violence, some gore, dry humour, overal a good cast,...

Nightbreed (Director's Cut) (1990)
First viewing. Didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised.
Some things look outdated but overal it still stands.
Would love to see a decent remake and/or sequels.

This is my favorite. Thomas Jane is The Punisher. Granted I haven't read or looked at the comic/graphic novels but the fight with the Russian accompanied by opera...is outstanding! : )

HARD CANDY (2006) Very intense cat and mouse film with two extremely unpleasant characters...to tell more would be unfair and you'll get the full impact coming in cold. Very good performances by Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson. ****

Nah, gotta go with Titus Pullo as the Punisher, he has the look and the attitude far more than the other 2. Warzone is my fave of the 3 films too but the Looney Bin Jim character almost ruins it.

I did like the Thomas Jane one but wished it stuck with having Ma Gnucci as the baddie ratherthan lame John Travolta. The Russian was done well though.

We saw The Babadook last night.

Big thumbs up!

The acting is excellent, and the story is very dark indeed.

I rewatched A Tale of Two Sisters, and I understand what happened now. That's some crazy stuff.

Also, was my post for Haunting in Connecticut 2 deleted?
