I've seen a good deal over the past few days.
Desperate Measures predictable/cliche yet enjoyable thriller Them good movie, nothing special however. watched The Fisher King for a second time Copland same deal as desperate measures. Pineapple Express wasn't expecting much, but was taken by suprise. laughed my ass off. James Franco nails the stoner role better than anyone. The Road totally took me by suprise, loved it. way better than The Proposition. Glory good yet slightly flawed flick. Avatar 3D (imax) pretty kickass. Feed repulsive, nauseating. the most disgusting movie I have ever seen. |

The Vampire Lovers
Great Hammer vampire flick notable for the amount of female nudity and implied lesbianism. If any of you have Impact station on demand, have some fun and check this classic out. |

Last Seen: Club Dread (2004). Figured i'd take a risk on this one as i usually don't like horror comedies. This was an exception. With lots of eye candy, fun, comedy, and some gore, Club Dread was a pleasant surprise. Ashe. d |

Jacob's Ladder.
I haven't seen this movie in almost 20 years. Amazing movie. Aged so well that it really could have been made recently. |

Duplicity (2009)
Nothing special, but I liked it as far as big-budget Hollywood caper flicks are concerned. Tony Gilroy directs from his nicely complex script, and keeps the action flying from start to finish. The cast is pretty solid too - Clive Owen playing his trademark spy and Julia Roberts in a surprisingly bearable role headline the show, and they're backed up by the always great Paul Giamatti and Tom Wilkinson as rival CEO's. If you're bored and want something flashy with a bit of a brain behind it, this wouldn't be your worst option... Star Trek (2009) Finally got around to seeing this, and I'm so glad that I did - enjoyed every second of it. I've always been a casual Trek fan - just started getting into the original series last year though - and this update more than lived up to my expectations. A sci-fi epic of the highest caliber. |
Who do you think fit their roles best?
Kirk came into the ...Kirk-ish? Bit towards the end I thought. Though for me, Karl Urban as Bones/McCoy was just the best...he had it down from the start IMO. |

They coulda had that Gervais guy do an alright Scotty I thought...
I'm a bit pissed at the whole Simon Pegg thing actually, like I keep holding onto the hope of him being in something as good (not that ST wasn't) or in a role as funny as Shaun or Spaced...and he just keeps being in...shit, or in this case a completely unsuited "lets put him in because people seem to like him now" roles...run fatboy run? that burglar one with david schwimmer? a bunch of zombie related cameos, and didn't see how to lose friends/alienate people but looked about the same league as the other two... Not saying he should be stuck on horror/comedy forever or anything, but I'd sure like to see him in something I'd actually consider worth watching him in. |
"The men who stare at goats" 6/10
Not really my kind of humor. I'm sure some of you will absolutely love it tho. |

Maybe it's just because I've never been a die-hard Trekkie, but I didn't have any problem with Pegg...he entertained the Hell out of me. Sure, he took some liberties with the character, and he may have been a bit over-the-top, but I found he fit the tone of the film and gave a great fun performance. I can see why it might bug some people, but I thought he was great. |

But anyway, Scotty was always kind of over-zealous in the original series, so I thought Pegg did a good job. The real problem is that Scotty is supposed to blend into the background, and Kirk and Spock were the main roles. I think what Pegg did, was be so good that he stole every scene he was in and thus became a little out of character. |
A Perfect Getaway.
I really enjoyed this movie as I give it a 8 out of 10. |
I really like Pegg in Star Trek as well, the only thing I didn't like was that stupid little creature they insisted on putting in the movie.

The Baron of Arizona (1950)
Lucked out this afternoon and managed to catch this on TCM. Been wanting to see it ever since I first heard about it (Vincent Price as a con-artist trying to steal the entire territory of Arizona? Sold!), but couldn't find a copy. Well now that I've seen it, I wasn't let down at all. Just an all-around great movie, with one of Price's best performances. Supporting cast is really strong too - the lovely Ellen Drew plays Price's "Baroness", and Reed Hadley (who also appeared with Price in Shock and Leave Her To Heaven) lights up the screen as a fraud investigator dying to bring down "the Baron of Arizona". This is also my first exposure to Samuel Fuller, but it wont be my last - his script and direction had me completely engaged right from the opening scene. Rarely does Price play this kind of character...to go into what makes it such a great performance would spoil aspects of the plot, but suffice to say he goes far beyond his typical villainous role. I think you all know how huge a fan of Price I am, and I'd put this right up with his best work. A must see for all fans of Price, of a good swindle, or of American history (based on a true story!). Avatar (2009) Second viewing in theatres...just as amazing as the first. |

Disturbing.....but not as bad as I thought it would be.I actually thought Cannibal Holocaust was worse. |
Subtterano
Am Australian sci fi flick that is not to bad if a little cheesy at times. It's about a virtual reality game that some people get trapped in and hunted down. 6.5/10 |

Daybreakers
Not really a horror flick like I expected but I really enjoyed it. The story was interesting and well written, the social commentary was layered and handled very well, and the action was pretty damn good. It was a bit predictable and some of the effects were less than stellar but I really enjoyed this well paced action drama. My buddy said it almost could have been a cop drama. |

Such a cute quirky film - highlights being Screaming Jay Hawkins, a drug Joe Strummer and the revelation that Carl Perkins is indeed the best... |

Shaun was like a 9. Hot Fuzz. Hm. 6-7? The rest don't even rate for me. I wasn't too bothered by him in Star Trek, though I don't think he suited the part too well, and in all honesty they didn't give him much to do except for playing with the transporter tech similar to what Chekov was doing. Yes, I like the Chekov guy, pretty good young actor there in all I've seen him in. Just watched "The Faculty". IMO one of the better body snatchers clones. I actually thought sci-fi/horror both had a pretty good run around this timeframe. |

In my book it's the other way around, although not THAT high ranked. More like Fuzz 8, Shaun 7. Just thought you'd be extremly happy to know.. |

Youth in Revolt
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...MichaelCer.jpg It was cute. Definitely a lot more muted than I had anticipated. Unfortunately, the previews show all of the laugh-out-loud parts, so the laughs were already anticipated. Regardless, the writing was absolutely fantastic. Gustin Nash creates and overly-dramatic teen romance to the tune of French melodrama. I found the lines brilliant and meticulously delivered by both Michael Cera and Portia Doubleday. Enjoyable, but not the comedy that I was hoping for. Definitely worth seeing, but you don't need to pay theater prices for it. 3/5. ... Daybreakers http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...e_poster1a.jpg Another slight disappointment. It wasn't bad, per se. In fact, I enjoyed it all the way through. The concept and the world that they create is incredible and intriguing. The special effects and gore are fantastic and Sam Neil was brilliant. I was significantly more interested in the vampire world than the human world, so I didn't really sympathize with the plight of the humans (the main human characters are two-dimensional, even Willem Dafoe - his character really stuck out like a sore thumb). Like The Breed, this movie is intriguing and highly entertaining, but I think that with its budget and star power it could have been better. Regardless, it was a good addition to the growing vampire mythos. 3.25/5. |
I'm glad I caught Sherlock Holmes on Friday instead of one of these two. Youth in Revolt looked fun, I was contemplating Nine, but my girlfriend was dead set on Holmes. I'm glad she was.
It didn't turn out to be that much of an action packed shitsplat. Holmes was very physical, but its not just a smashcut heavy fightfest. The plot actually follows Conan Doyle logic with a lot of neopulp and sorta steampunky elements thrown in. Robert Downey Jr. was a great Holmes, not played just as a junkie or a square, but as a gauche autistic savant type constantly living in his head and half as charming as he thinks he is. Jude Law's Watson was a good complement to this vision of Holmes, not a bumbling idiot but a longsuffering friend and sidekick trying to differentiate and rid his life of somebody who's not just an obnoxious pest but an obnoxious pest he believes in. 4/5, recommended Also watched Lady Vengeance and Animal House yesterday. Lady Vengeance felt slow and convoluted, but Animal House is Animal House so cleansed my palate rather well. |
