Comment from IMDB:

"For a movie I haven't seen in 10 or 20 years, and one that I disliked on its initial release, THE OTHER sure has stuck with me. It is a low-budget, low-key retelling of a psychological horror novel by actor-turned-writer Tom Tryon, and it is pretty darned faithful to its source material. The twins playing the murderous kid are terrific, and veteran thesp Uta Hagen is a standout as the grandma. It used to run on TV a lot. Now it is a "lost" classic. See it if you can. There is a cellar sequence, of which I will say no more other than that it is key to the whole plot, that is sure to scare the pants off even the most hardened horror film fan."

SOLD!!!

Paranormal Activity.
I don't care how many endings it had...for those who saw it in a noisy cinema, you might find on dvd viewings, it wasn't spoiled by that.
Did not like.

Alice in Wonderland - the ol' animated one.
Saw this as I heard that the "new" one is something of a sequel of sorts, so thought I'd freshen up a tad.
Yknow...this is a pretty damn good animated film no matter what spin you put on it, great animation, some of the strangest dialogue that has ways of getting so nonsensical that it starts making sense again, REALLY good background/scenery art, a fantasy classic for sure. And yknow what? I couldn't remember them, but I actually thought the songs were pretty good too.
Hard to believe it was made all the way back in '51...

The noisy theater is what sold it for me. I was more scared from people's nervous energy and screams, than I was by the plot or on screen jumps. I don't think I would like it on dvd at allll. But uhm.... do you think you could send me a file of the alternate endings? I'll give you my e-mail and everything, but I can't find them online and I'm curious about the original suicide ending.

cheebacheeba 12-30-2009 06:40 PM

Nah, I just heard about a few different alternate endings...didn't see any other'n the one I got...in which:
The guy hears her screaming and goes downstairs, she comes back up with blood on her carrying a knife, cops come in later and when she goes towards them holding the knife in a confused state they shoot her.
...I looked up some of the endings on youtube but all I found was a bunch of dickheads.

Is that a remake of the old 'Black Devil doll from hell'?

Another animated movie of doom.

Beautiful. Loved it.

Grace (2009). Not your typical horror flick, it was not really scary but instead disturbing. The story was pretty good overall. This movie really captured the gritty realities of some of the more overlooked aspects of a life when it turns messy. The direction was very good from a relative newcomer. The acting was fine, and the camerawork was pretty fun, especially with the use of focus. Fairly gory and very unsettling, i wouldn't recommend this to pregnant gals or those with young children.

Paranormal Activity (2007). i thought this one to be genuinely fearful. i watched it just before going to sleep, which was perfect for effect. i think much of the scare factor here comes from making that which is mundane into a potential time of terror. Good stuff. .

i don't think so, but they may have hijacked the basic concept of a possessed doll from them. BDV was pretty much an over the top sexploitation piece with no boundaries. It was kinda a "so bad its fun" thing; it did have a couple of hilarious moments.

Sad and frustrating story. Great sci-fi.

Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire (2009)

Wasn't crazy about it. Doesn't really give you much reason to care about the main character beyond the fact that she has a shitty life. Her situation is powerfully portrayed through strong acting and solid direction, but the fact is that Precious just isn't a very likable character. Not all movies have to make you like the main character, but for something like this to work you should be able to feel something for her...maybe it's just because I'm from the absolute wrong demographic, but I really couldn't care much at all.

It's not really a bad movie, just not as good as the hype machine wants you to think. It's well made and showcases some strong performances - I don't think she deserves to win, but Mo'Nique will be getting a well deserved Oscar nomination for her role as the abusive mother - but overall it fell pretty flat for me.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)

A few months back I watched a wonderful documentary on John Ford...I hadn't seen any of his films at the time, but was immediately on the lookout for some of his work. Well, this is the first film of his that I've had the opportunity to watch, and I couldn't be more impressed. A western that beyond being beautifully shit and well acted, really leaves you with something to think about. Our two "heroes" - John Wayne's Tom Doniphon and James Stewart's Ransom Stoddard - are both fascinating characters, and the film leaves you with a moral dilemma: both men have their own flaws and made their own mistakes...but who did the right thing?

Absolutely makes my list of favourite westerns, and I'll be checking out more of Ford's work as soon as I can.

Invictus (2009)

A good film, but I was expecting more from Eastwood. Freeman, Damon and the supporting cast all give fantastic performances, but the film as a whole seemed overlong - the blame for which lies partially with the poorly paced script, but also with the lackluster (and often inappropriate) score. I was interested from beginning to end and there were some brilliant moments here and there, but it could easily have been 20 minutes shorter and had a much stronger impact.

Despare 01-01-2010 09:35 PM

Sherlock Homes
I went in not expecting much but I really enjoyed it. There was a moment in the beginning half where I almost fell asleep but after a nudge from the wife my interest was captured. For the life of me I can't figure out why films today love to flirt with that two and a half hour length, especially when it seems so unnecessary. Good flick though, can't wait for the next.

A true classic. Can't forget to mention badass Lee Marvin.
I highly recommend The Quiet Man. My favorite Ford film (though it's an unusual one for him) and my favorite John Wayne film.

Elvis_Christ 01-01-2010 10:21 PM

My favorite Wayne film is still The Searchers. But The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is solid for sure.

Still not much bad to say about this film, I really liked it...the opening is crazy and pretty emotional and I just think the whole thing is pretty epic.

The Bank Job (2008). It was nice to see Jason Statham get a chance to prove that he can act without the requisite action scenes to bolster his qualities. This was a top notch caper flick. Although it started a little slow, once it got going the pacing was perfect. With little initial action, the story-telling was enough to keep the viewer more than interested; there was sufficient character development to get the viewer to care about the characters. As usual with British caper flicks, this was nicely convoluted such that the characters were all nicely intertwined. Acting was strong, direction was fine, lubba lubba lubba. Overall a great crime drama. AShe.

A Stranger in Town (1967)
The Stranger Returns (1967)

A great pair of low-budget spaghetti westerns...enjoyed them both. They've got a wonderfully cynical sense of humor throughout, and Anthony's Stranger never ceases to entertain. The second film is stronger by far, but the first is still a really fun little western.

I'd consider both of these flicks must-sees for any spaghetti western fans out there. Even though they were quite obviously made to cash in on Leone's trilogy, these are still highly entertaining.

Mothman, Elvis, Phantomstranger, _V_ - consider this a recommendation.

Christmas present, actually...but I'm pretty sure they ordered it from the Turner Classic Movies website:

I'm sure you can find it cheaper though. As awesome as they are, I sure wouldn't pay what they're asking.
