The running man

It had been a long time since I watched this flick, it hadn't really lost much over the years. Maybe a few to many one liners from Arnie, but it is otherwise pretty solid.

Candyman (1992). Hard to believe that i had never seen this wonderful flick. While looking kinda cheesey, this flick deserves to be a cult classic. The story was solid, as was the acting. The direction made for a believably creepy movie, and the score had a disturbingly religious feel. All in all a great horror movie.

Dead Man (1995). One word-brilliant! There is so much to this movie that it would probably be best to see it a few times before making any comments on it. Unfortunately, i am not that intelligent. This is a dreamy movie centering on purgatory, good and evil, and the spiritual sterility of the west. While Johnny Depp and Gary Farmer are wonderful in their leading roles, there is not a bad act in this one, with the likes of Crispin Glover, Robert Mitchum, Iggy Pop, and many others filling in the gaps. The symbolism in the movie is layered like an onion, and the direction and story by Jim Jarmusch is perfect. Shot in black and white, with the occassional transition to sepia and the infrequently obtrusive closeup, this movie is absolutely beautiful. The score by Neil Young not only drives movie forward, but is seemlessly interwoven into the very fabic of the essence of this movie. The very beginning hints that this movie will be better than anticipated for all of those that expect more than just sex and violence from a movie, not that there is anything wrong with that. Ashe.

So many tities and ass shots, you kind of forget the story line.... And the story line is pretty forgetable, but it has good gore and some daft slapstick to keep you amused. \

Antichrist (2009)

I feel as if I should wait a while to fully process and then step back from the immediate visceral reaction(s) this film inspires before I write about it.

But wow. What a film.

Another below average TCM rip off and this time from Cameron Romero...the son of George Romero! Even the tea lady from the TCM remake & the beginning played the role of the mother here.

Ravenous (1999). This wickedly delicious little flick that was both comical and disturbing. The story itself was simple enough, pretty much an offshoot of the infamous Donner Party. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep it interesting. The acting was more than solid, and the quiver of personalities was delightful, though many of them were killed off before they could fully bloom. The score was fantastically incongruent with the movie content at times, which somehow worked with beautiful effect. The direction was solid, as was the camerawork. A must see if the overall theme is not too repugnant. Ashe.

"Werewolves: The Dark Survivors" (2009)

Made for cable TV movie. (showing on Animal Planet of all places)
Faux documentary (shot like a true crime show) about a cop and a zoologist investigating a murder and how it leads them into the shadowy world of modern day werewolves.

Surprisingly decent take on the werewolf legend. Tries to be realistic even with such a fantastic subject. I enjoyed it.

Watched A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) for the first time in a while a few days ago, I gotta say it still holds up for me. I was genuinely frightened which surprised me quite a bit.

Halloween III - BAH, at least I didn't fall asleep this time.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (82') - While the acting in the movie is far superior the voices in the original are beautiful. I love Lansbury as Lovett, she always cracks me up. It's funny, the only person in the movie that is far and away better than their stage counterpart is Sacha Baron Cohen who puts on a show that's truly superior to the original. A lot of fun, it's neither better nor worse than the movie in my opinion and I think I'll be buying this one.

Bug

What an infuriating movie. Sets up a really interesting situation, keenly directed, expertly acted, and then in the last 20 minutes completely throws away everything it set up for a bunch of psychobabble.

Every Little Step (2008)

Brilliant documentary about the trials and tribulations of young performers auditioning for the Broadway revival of A Chorus Line, while simultaneously delving into the fascinating story of how the show was originally conceived.

I know that I'm not the only one here with a passion for theatre - if anyone with a love for Broadway hasn't seen this one yet, treat yourself and do so immediately. I went in with high expectations and was not let down.

psycho d 10-27-2009 05:30 AM

The Alphabet Killer (2008). Decent enough psycho-thriller. It seemed better than it was because i figured it would be total crap. The acting was decent, the story fairly predictable. At least the very ending, which was lame in its own way, was not at least totally cookbook. Ashe.

Cloverfield- 9/10

Sometimes They Come Back... Again- 7/10 (Had never seen it. Liked it a lot)

Sometimes They Come Back For More- 3/10 (Started out great, seemed like it would be a suspenseful flick, and felt a lot like 'The Thing'. It wore thin.)

Desperation- 1/10 (Nothing happens in this movie...)

Storm of the Century- 4/10 (Started out with promise, turned in to 3 hours of build up for a poorly executed, unrealistic, and overall stupid climax)

Rose Red- 4/10 (Same thing. Way too long, and boring. The Haunting remake was better.)

Those weren't really made as movies though, which is what ultimately hurts them when you watch it on DVD. I enjoyed Storm of the Century during the original mini-series run but on DVD, not so much.

Zombieland

A brilliant film. Aside from a short spell in the middle it was consistently funny, the acting was good and the character of Tallahasse was brilliant. Bill Murray had a very funny part. I found myself laughing at this just as much as I did with Shaun of the Dead, if not more. The rules were entertaining and the film never takes itself too seriously.

Gods and Generals

Fuck me this one just went on and on! I persevered though and dont wholly regret doing so. The rise and fall of legendary confederate Stonewall Jackson is a struggle at times, overly sentimental and waaaaaaaay too long but it is compensated by some solid acting and decent battle scenes.

If half the things in this film is accurate, its difficult to see Stonewall as a tactical genius when its clear every bugger else was a complete clueless wanker when it comes to battle tactics. Surely lining your men behind a wall is basic common sense as opposed to standing up in an open field firing one shot a minute. In the Kingdom of the blind, the one eyed man is King.

Worth a watch but be sure to stock on supplies before settling in.

Calvaire (2004). Definitely not a movie for everyone, but a must see for those looking for horribly disturbing movies that are done well. Set in the countryside of Belgium, this shocker rates up there with Irreversible, if not beyond. The acting was solid, the story simple, and the direction great. The camerawork was awesome, with dizzying shots and dismally washed out color film. The harsh and foreboding landscapes only added to the dark nature of Calvaire. The ending is one that initially disappoints but then works its way back into your psyche like a persistent parasite of the mind. Loved it.

A Simple Plan (1998). Wonderful if somewhat dismal, this flick by Sam Raimi takes a rather simple idea and twists it up into ugly knots. Intrigue, greed and distrust disfigure typical stereotypes and bring out the evil in the four main characters. Billy Bob and Bill Paxton were superb, and the rest of the acting was without a flaw. The cinematography was literally chilling, and the direction was awesome. This dark tale literally uses film to separate the veritable dark nature out of man's divine self portrait.

It seems that yesterday was a day of frozen landscape flicks. Ashe.

Drag Me to Hell (2009). Great movie. Pretty scary, does not take itself seriously, and a fun ending to boot. Any more, i think that the scariest elements of a movie are when the characters undergo embarrassing or humiliating situations. Now that gives me the creeps. Ashe.

Martyrs

I didn't think this was as brutal or hard to watch as everyone had been going on about. I felt all the violence was perfectly justified by the story line which is very strong. A very interesting movie, I just wish there were more great ideas like this being developed.
