Drag Me To Hell

Enjoyed it but the Evil Dead gags/homages got pretty tiresome and the ending was way to predictable.

The Condemed

Good fun despite it being way to drawn out and the awful nu-metal/radio rock soundtrack. Sure Endgame and The Running Man did it better but this was a pretty dope modern action flick (which are sadly few and far between these days).

Brainscan

It had potential... but a really silly "villain" ruined it for me.

L'armee des Ombres AKA Army of Shadows (1969). In short, this was a non-spectacular masterpiece by Jean-Pierre Melville. This is a somber tale of a cell of freedom fighters for the Resistance in France during the Occupation, considered to be terrorists by the Germans. There are no superheroes here, just ordinary men and women called up to an extaordinary duty. What is incredible about this flick is not the action, but the realities of the lives that they must live. Of course there are a couple of "action" scenes, but even they are approached from an almost dull manner. The characters of this flick are forced to live tragic, empty, and isolated lives in order to attempt to make a difference, which they never really seem able to do, especially since they are up against the massive forces of the occupation. Instead, this flick centers on the lives of the Freedom Fighters as they are forced to move from hideout to hideout, faced with the reaility that each and every one of them will probably be called upon to commit some unspeakable act, such as execute one of their own, before they meet their own lonely and tortuous demise. Occassionally there is some action, where they are either being chased or are trying to save a comrade. The acting was on the whole supreme, but the lead part off Lino Ventura was absolutely amazing. A brilliant piece of cinema. Ashe.

This Halloween, Anchor Bay Entertainment releases Staunton Hill on October 6, 2009.

Directed by the son of legendary cult filmmaker George A. Romero, Cameron Romero is clearly following in his father's fearful footsteps as a master of terror and suspense.

When a group of hikers take off for a weekend of fun and adventure in remote mountain region, they unwittingly stumble across the Staunton family - for whom the hill is named - and find themselves at the mercy of a depraved, diabolical brood that will stop at nothing to rid their property of these "trespassers." The only law on Staunton's Hill is the law of the Stauntons...and, in this case, the penalty for defying that law is death.

Staunton Hill stars Kathy Lamkin (No Country for Old Men), Cristen Coppen (Road Trip), Kiko Ellsworth (Dexter) and Cooper Huckabee (The Funhouse).

One of the best Barker adaptations, IMO.

i felt the same exact way.

the only saving grace was seeing it in a theatre full of screaming teenage girls - so i was able to enjoy the nostalgia that brought - more than the movie itself.

raimi - you just cant go all the way back home again.

I can't understand the attraction to Halloween II. Please do not take this as an attack on you, because one of my best friends LOVES H2. I just can't stand the film.

It's a week re-tread with poor direction, bad acting, an annoying interpreatation of one of the greatest soundtracks of all time and the lead character (the only truly sympathetic and fully realized character in the film) is asleep until the climax.

Sure it ends well, but getting to that ending is like pulling teeth. John Carpenter's Halloween is soooooo good, but the sequel feels empty and uninspired to me.

I'd rather watch Halloween III, as incoherent as it may be, anyday.

Perfect blend. Together with The Others and House on Haunted Hill, it would make one heck of a Haunted House Marathon.

And at the end of it all, the wife would crawl under the covers, shaking in sheer fright. No sex for that night.

Made for TV timewaster, surprised to see F Murray Abraham in it. As B movies go it was OK but you really need to have a love for the (classic) old crap films to appreciate the new crap films like this.

I love it myself and it ranks up there as one of my all time favorite horror films. The pacing of it is just menacing and there's plenty of tense moments just like the original. Each to their own...

I was going to hire that the other night, might give it a spin seeing as I love the classic 'old crap films' :)

I see what your saying to a degree, but for me, H2 represents one of the better sequels out there. It takes advantage of the set- up provided by Halloween and offers a simple bare bones approach to the format. Still plenty of nice touches along the way, little bit of added brutality, classic ending and some fine moments from Donald Plesance. I know its execution is crude but I guess I forgive it its faults because, generally speaking, it delivers what I'm looking for.

Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3D

Not much to say that hasn't been said countless times, although the texture work on 2 was incredible.

I completely agree with you, I was very disappointed with H2.

It's Alive double bill & others.

Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972)

A fantastic later addition of the series. It's pretty well packed & nicely paced; Lee and Cushing are, of course excellent, the Hammer beauties like Caroline Munro (though appeared with a short role) and Stephanie Beacham (looked stunning at the final showdown) and the overall 70's tone made it highly enjoyable.

Brazil (1985)

A remarkable satire of all time.

It's Alive (1974)

A pretty decent suspenseful entertainer with an effective background score. Also the performance of John Ryan as the father was simply great to watch.

It's Alive (2009)

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/3948/itsaliver.jpg

As a remake I think it's just okay considering it's effort. It has a different approach in the storyline from the original and those alterations or the changes weren't enough for ruining anything that much. A time passing fair treat.

Btw, in matter of comparison...as almost based on the same theme, this year's dark horror gem Grace (2009) is obviously the superior one.

Le Samourai (1967). i think that this flick by Melville would be best seen without review of any kind, save for that it was absolutely brilliant. For the guys out there, it is not a chick flick so that should not stop ya from seeing this incredible French classic. i cannot help myself, though, and must say that Alain Delon's perfomance was superb. Goya's Ghosts (2006)

More amazing work from Milos Forman...he might not be as prolific as some other great directors (he's made less than 10 movies since Cuckoo's Nest in '75), but I've yet to see him create anything less than stellar.

This incredibly dark and powerful period piece is not only beautifully realised, but features a cast of powerhouse performers: Javier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgård and Natalie Portman all inhabit these characters and deliver some truly powerful moments.

Didn't know what to expect from that as I knew next to nothing about Goya going into it...ended up being very impressed.

roshiq 10-10-2009 11:31 PM

The Hills Run Red (2009)

http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/1...llsrunredh.jpg

A better effort (rather than go for a remake of 80's slasher & for the attempt of avoiding some cliches) and slightly an above average homage for the genre fans. Though I think it could have been better in some area at the end parts but overall it's a decent time passing slasher entertainer.

psycho d 10-11-2009 05:49 AM

Dirty Pretty Things (2002). A grimy story of the tribulations of illegal immigrants and what they must endure (and perform) for those most willing to take advantage of them. The cast was a treat, for they were not only solid actors, but there was nary a standard fare Englishman amonst them. Chiwetel Ejiofor as Okwe portrayed his angelic though tortured character beautifully and deserves an award for his performance. When Audrey Tautou finally let down her stern manner of consternation it was almost a relief. This was definitely a dark, cerebral, and even poetic flick that makes the viewer forget that he is watching a movie. Ashe.
