Zombieland (2009)
Fucking. Awesome. You guys are going to love this one - best zombie flick I've seen in a very long time. I can see some folks being let down by the lack of gore, but they more than make up for it with a great cast, a witty script, and the perfect balance between hilarity and intensity. Woody Harrelson absolutely steals the show, but you've already seen most of his best moments in the trailers. I was actually really impressed with Jesse Eisenberg...he gets a little annoying when he slips into his Michael Cera-style "lovable awkwardness" mode, but he actually manages to pull off some fairly touching moments. There's also a certain cameo appearance part way through that had me laughing my ass off - it's a pretty poorly kept secret, but if you don't already know who shows up I'd advise going in blind, just so you can get the same effect :) Can't wait to hear what the rest of you think. I'd recommend this one to just about all of you zombie fans - don't go in looking for buckets of gore, because if you do you'll be disappointed. But if you go in looking for some big laughs, really cool set pieces and maybe a few surprises, you should have a blast. |
Hills Run Red
Films about films always bother me... they just seem self-indulgent. That said, this film totally satisfied me. The pacing and story are a bit off in the first two acts, but the finale rules and more than makes up for any of the film's shortcomings. A solid slasher with a great killer and an even more demented svengali. |
Richard Speck: Chicago Massacre
Parker Lewis on a bit of a rampage :) This wasn't to bad I dig these killer biopics, it had a good balance of the investigation/the killer's activities. Still waiting for one of these to top Ted Bundy or The Hillside Strangler. Tony Todd made an apperance and Andrew Divoff was pretty solid. |
Wonder Woman
The DTV from earlier this year. I was never really interested in Wonder Woman, but this was great. I think I even preferred it over First Flight and Public Enemies. |
Iphigenia (1977)
A very well produced and incredibly powerful interpretation of the classic Greek tragedy. I can't even imagine how challenging it must have been to adapt an ancient Greek play and still give it this much effect on modern audiences, but somehow they manage to create incredible tension and bring these mythic characters to life with grace and strength. Very, very impressed. Alky, _V_, Roshiq, Geddy, Fortunato, Doc - any of you guys seen this? If not, give it a look. Might need to brush up on your ancient Greek culture first as some elements wont really make sense otherwise, but I think you would really appreciate this one. |

Zombieland was so so good. Like Return said, it's highly recommended. Funny, witty, touching. The cameo was hilarious. The comedy does go beyond what happens in the trailer, so don't expect that you've already seen all the good bits.
Sneak some Twinkies in in your coat pockets, enjoy the movie and stay til after the credits roll for another laugh or two. |

Sin Nombre (2009). i cannot attest to the reality of life in Central America as it is portrayed in this film, but sadly it is not too hard to imagine it as painfully authentic. This film is a beautiful study on the trappings of a third world lifestyle gone horibly awry. The story centers on two opposites, one an iniquitous gangbanger and the other an innocent girl, as they try to leave behind a world with no future. While the story itself was not as deep as that of "City of God," i'd say the bleak atmosphere lent to the inevitable misery that these people are born into may have actually made this one as powerful if not more so.

Silent Hill- 7/10
I still think this flick has one of, if not the best horror climaxes of recent years. |

Night Watch.

Last night I watched Clive Barker's Night Breed...sheesh, this movie only gets better with age. I remember going to the premiere in Rockville, Md when I was 12 or 13...I thought the movie was great but didn't grasp alot of the plot. The make up was great( I think it stands up today) the environment of Midian was so good & creepy and the story was good but more geared for adults than the average horror film. Watching the movie 20 years later, I was suprised how much I missed by not understanding just a few things...Anyhoo props to Barker, trifecta king of horror art/film/writing!

Adam Resurrected (2008)
The story of Adam Stein (Jeff Goldblum), a Jewish comedian of genius in prewar Berlin, who is unable to save his family when the Nazi genocide overtakes them and only survives a concentration camp himself by becoming the 'literal pet' of the camp’s commandant (Willem Dafoe). These harrowing memories torment Adam in 1961, when he is the star patient at a special mental hospital built for Holocaust survivors in the Israeli desert. It's not dared to be Cuckoo's nest but still bit surprised to see all the mixed reviews about the film. Where I think it's quite touching & moving instead. And Goldblum delivers one of his finest role for sure..what a blazing performance! At least give it a watch for him. >>: B+ Obsessed (2009) >>: C- |

One of my favorite movies of all time. I believe it did the book great justice. The feel of the movie is dead on. Fun fact you don't care about: I had no idea they made a movie of this and it just so happened the day I finished the book I was flipping around late night TV later on and this movie started on TBS or something. And started looking very familiar. On topic, I currently have Ghoulies II in the player right now. |
The Haunted World of El Superbeasto
I liked it, but I was expecting a little more. The humor was sometimes a little TOO juvenile and the story wasn't all that great but I liked some of the characters and loved the little musical interludes. So, while I was a little disappointed (and disinterested for a brief second here and there) I still enjoyed it. |
Glory.....

The Battle of Algiers (1965). This fantastic flick, shot documentary style, felt less a movie and more like an actual history as to what happened. The differing black and white scenes, some clean and some wickedly grainy, worked wonderfully to demonstrate each scene's power and influence. There is no character development, just the start of a war for independence and freedom from colonialism. Apparently it was unbiased in its portrayal of atrocities committed on each side.
Laid to Rest (2008). For those looking for complicated premises, profound stories, and twists galore, this will probably be a disappiontment. If unabashed gore and brutality, decent acting, and some eye candy is what ya had in mind, then this flick is the perfect choice. Laid to Rest is a wickedly simple story of a monster's inability to end his campaign of atrocious bloodletting. And the occassional techno deathmetal score was apropos, especially during the split second torture-fest in the intro credits. Ashe. derek |

Antichrist.
Not sure what all the hype was about. Disturbing? Somewhat. Graphic sex? Some. Graphic violence? A bit. Misogynistic? Not so sure about that. I think that because it's seen as more of an "art film" it got far more flack than it deserved. The sex and violence isn't really much more than you can see in a dozen other more mainstream movies that are released each year. It's just the juxtaposition of said sex and violence with the perceived type of film it is and you get people going apeshit over it. Would I recommend it? To most people, no. It's just not that kind of movie. But to someone who really digs Lynch and similar directors, most definitely. |

El traspatio [Backyard] (2009)
http://pics.filmaffinity.com/El_tras...74789-full.jpg It centers on a young detective (Ana de la Reguera) determined to solve a series of murders committed against women in the northern border city of Ciudad Juarez. Ciudad Juarez is a small town in Mexico along with the U.S. border where women have been disappearing, only to be found later raped and murdered. Though the numbers keep growing, seems like no one really cares. These women come mainly from the poor classes, cheap labor for factories of multinational businesses on the area, and these crimes are, at most, a nuisance to the authorities. This Mexican movie from director Carlos Carrera focuses on that reality and made a decent tragic drama out of it. The Mexican film academy already selected "Backyard" as its foreign-language Oscar contender for the 82nd Academy Awards. >>: B+ Trainspotting (1996) >>: A- G.I.
