Good Hammer film that really could be better...script is very inconsistent and although Yvonne Maular is gorgeous (and nice when we met her), her character is as stupid as can be. On the plus side, really good production values, Peter Cushing is fantastic and for my money, Andree Melley is the ultimate vampire chick...feral, scary and sort of hot...she scared me big time when I was younger. ***

My first post here! Hello. I agree about Brides of Dracula - Yvonne Monlaur was stunning, wasn't she? I also really rated David Peel's vampire; it's sad he never continued acting much after this. His Meinster character managed to do what Dracula never did - and put the bite on Van Helsing.
The only thing that disappointed me was the ending. After watching Dracula visibly crumble to dust in the previous film, Meinster just ... well, fell over! I always felt that was a little anti-climactic.

BLACK FRIDAY (1940). Been a long week, work wise and just wanted something short and sweet before bed. This gets a less than stellar rap because Bela/Boris don't have scenes together, but found Stanley Ridges quite good in here. ***

Yeah Stanley Ridges nails it in this - the personality changes are fantastic.
An unrated gem in mu opinion.

THE AMAZING MR. X (1948). While this more noir-ish than scary, there are some supernatural elements here and some great camera work for the time. Good cast includes Turhan Bey (THE MUMMY'S TOMB, THE MAD GHOUL), Lynn Bari (1946's SHOCK with Vincent Price), Kathy O'Donnell (TERROR IN THE HAUNTED HOUSE and really good in THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES) and Richard Carlson (CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE, VALLEY OF GWANGI). Not great, but worth checking out. ***

Brides of Dracula 1960
5/10

I had this film confused with Dracula -- thinking this one had Drac turning to dust -- but that was Dracula. This one was pretty slow but steady all the way through. It's not scary, or exciting in my opinion.

Recently I watched:

The Night Of The Demon
The Vampire (1957)
The Dunwich Horror (1970)

Ferox13 03-01-2015 01:23 AM

What did you think of The Dunwich Horror?

Someone needs to do this one right or at least let Stuart Gordon have a go.

Which THE VAMPIRE did you watch- The Mexican with German Robles or the seriously good one with John Beal, Colleen Grey and Kenneth Tobey?

FryeDwight 03-03-2015 01:49 AM

DEAD MEN WALK (1943). Usual threadbare PRC touches, but decent little vampire film with George Zucco as twin brothers, the evil one being a vampire (George is great here with a cool laugh::big grin::) and Dwight Frye in a Renfield type role both carrying the film. **1/2

Damn Heathen 03-03-2015 02:27 PM

The Sinister Urge -- 1/10; I couldn't stop thinking about Rob Zombie.

DeadbeatAtDawn 03-03-2015 08:36 PM

Blood Of Dracula's Castle, 1969. 5/10

Thumb resize.

The Return of Dracula -- 4/10

FryeDwight 03-11-2015 02:26 AM

RETURN OF DRACULA is hard going...pretty cool ending though.

ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN (1948). Often called one of the best comedies ever, it's also one the best films ever, period. A and C are perfect and while the Monsters are lampooned (particularly Glenn Strange's Frankenstein Monster), they still come off as scary and retain their dignity.
Great seeing Bela Lugosi and Lon Chaney Jr again in their defining roles.
Love this and can watch it over and over. *****

Horror Of Dracula and Brides Of Dracula..

The Revenge of Frankenstein

Peter Cushing at his best!

FryeDwight 03-26-2015 02:01 AM

THE EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN (1964). Peter Cushing is great in here and although the film could be better, not as bad as made out to be. **1/2

Dead Bad Things 03-27-2015 07:29 AM

Here's what I got lined up ta watch this afternoon....
Coupla really good silent horror flicks !
Lon Chaney in The Penalty (1920)
Victor Hugo's The Man Who Laughs (1928)

FryeDwight 03-31-2015 04:02 AM

THE PENALTY is really good...have THE MAN WHO LAUGHS but still haven't put it in yet.

FREAKS (1932). For sure a cult movie and way ahead of its time. Lot of unforgettable scenes and the freak's revenge is still scary as hell. Great commentary by David Skal. ****

roshiq 04-01-2015 02:50 AM

The Sniper (1952)

Beautifully shot, a noir-esque psycho thriller!

I just watched Santo/Samson vs. the Vampire Women last night and the Devil Bat a few nights ago. I just saw this morning that James Best passed away so I'm going to pay tribute by watching the Killer Shrews tonight.

Today my ahole roommate was watching a Lovecraft movie about a weird family and some evil thing that fire could help against. I saw most of it and thought it was poor, very slow and repeating. Cannot reccomend it.

From what I've seen Lovecraft rarely translates well to film. Re-Animator is awesome but most of the rest are kind of meh.

Sometimes. Sometimes they're amazing. If I remember correctly From Beyond was one. Dagon was a great film. Dream's In the Witch House was a silly fun film. The silent The Call of Cthulu was fantastic. And Unnameable I and II. Bad films many sure, but quite a few good ones too.

You know not Necronomicon as great HP tradition of cinema? Shame and fish-death to both!

::shocked::

Today I watched 3 old ghost movies and all movies are very boring and tiring. I not recommend them to real horror fans.

say, I'd love if you would say what you think of the movies you see!

Anything at all... from a rating, or did you think it was good/bad? was it scary? describe some scene you thought was interesting... that sort of thing.

On the flipside, are you really interested in merely reading that someone you dont know watched a movie? I think we all assume that's occurring, doesnt make for interesting reading.

Roiffalo 04-30-2015 01:13 AM

I last watched Screaming Skull. Charming little ghost story of a film. One of my favorites that I like to go back to for drawing inspiration.

Titles. Titles. More to life than only titles, my friend. ::embarrassment::

Roiffalo 04-30-2015 10:05 PM

But. How can we watch something you'd recommend if you don't tell us what the name of the movie is?

Man Made Monster (1941)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ademonster.jpg

Just caught this on Svengoolie and loved it. Lon Chaney Jr gives a great performance. It's one of those classic stories about a monster whose not really the bad guy so the ending is always tragic. It plays out pretty formulaic here but it's done well enough that it's definitely worth seeing. The pseudo science is silly fun plus Lon Chaney glows through half the movie what's not to like.

FryeDwight 05-03-2015 03:31 AM

I love MMM a lot myself...Lon is quite engaging, good makeup job by Pierce,Lionel Atwill is great in here ( Love the part where he begs Samuel S Hinds not to call the police.."Oh no...PLEASE!"::big grin::) and it certainly moves.
Indeed, what's not to like?

phantomstranger 05-03-2015 11:27 AM

'Mystery At The Wax Museum" (1933)
-Lionel Atwill, Fay Wray

Plot: IMDB
In London, sculptor Ivan Igor struggles in vain to prevent his partner Worth from burning his wax museum...and his 'children.' Years later, Igor starts a new museum in New York, but his maimed hands confine him to directing lesser artists. People begin disappearing (including a corpse from the morgue); Igor takes a sinister interest in Charlotte Duncan, fiancée of his assistant Ralph, but arouses the suspicions of Charlotte's roommate, wisecracking reporter Florence.

Phantoms Review: Fun, but minor horror classic. One of the few times , that the Remake (House Of Wax with Vincent Price) was better. (in my opinion), But this is still an enjoyable film. Lionel Atwill is wonderfully mad, Fay Wray is as gorgeous as ever and actress Glenda Farrell is a blast as the tough talking female reporter trying to break a big story. Snappy 1930's dialogue, gothic atmosphere and an entertaining story.
