Inglorious Basterds (2009)

Fortunately, Tarantino's newest film is about so much more than what its marketing might suggest. In fact, the "basterds" play only a small part in this beautiful orchestration; the original working title- 'Once Upon a Time in Nazi-occupied France'- suits it much better. It's less about any specific characters (no, Brad Pitt is NOT the show stealer here) and more about the character of mass disorganization and widespread wartime chaos. Comparatively, this is a huge canvas for this director; considering his films usually contain themselves in one compact setting, and sometimes even one room, World War II is quite the undertaking. Thankfully he does it uniquely and makes the subject matter his own- though not obnoxiously so. Since his last project, the borderline self-parody that was 'Death Proof', he has gotten his dialogue back under control and I daresay he's even bettered it. It does help to have such a magnificent cast reciting it, and if the Academy is worth a damn Christoph Waltz and Diane Kruger will recieve Oscar nominations when the time comes. Perhaps best of all are the gloriously executed references and nostalgic nods to the cinema of the past, from Chaplin to De Palma, 'King Kong' to his own 'Pulp Fiction'; these are in-jokes, but they aren't pompous; unstead they, like the film itself, are a loving melting pot of all that is great about film.

The Red Shoes: It's a Korean horror film about this woman who's husband is cheating on her so she moves out with her daughter. She find's these red shoes that compel people to wear them, they act like it's the one ring. But every time someone wears them it means doom! DOOOOM!

It was pretty cool.

Well said, Alky.
I saw it last night and absolutely loved it. Everyone, do yourselves a favor and see it in the theater. ;)

Well, lets add another one to the pile:

Inglorious Basterds (2009)

There's no way I'm going to top Alky's review, so I'm not even going to try. I'll be more concise: I fucking loved it. Easily one of Tarantino's best, and Christoph Waltz gives a brilliant performance. The entire cast is great to be sure, but it's Waltz that really steals the show - can't take your eyes off him for a second, incredible work.

Doesn't happen often that I'm tempted to stand up and applaud in the cinema...this is an exception. Great fucking movie.

Nighthawks (1981)

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...awks_movie.jpg

Great little action/thriller from the 80's. Sly Stallone and Rutger Hauer both put up fantastic pefrormances. Hauer is capable of being one of the screen's best villains and I think Stallone is capable of being one of the screen's best heros, so it's especially awesome to see them playing off of each other, especially towards the last half of the film.

Inglourious Basterds

Nothing short of brilliant.

It's been mentioned a few times, and I have to definitely agree that Christoph Waltz is an absolute genius. He and Tarantino create one of the more horrifying and chilling villains that I have ever seen on screen. Cunning, brilliant, and just chilling. His acting job is complimented in full by an incredible job by Brad Pitt, who seems to outdo himself every time I see him.

Tarantino knows how to weave music, direction, acting, and writing into a horrifying breath-taking tapestry. I HIGHLY recommend this film. Best one I've seen this year. I actually applauded at the end of the film (a few people in the theater did, actually), and I can't remember the last time I've done that.

5/5.

[REC]

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ogrl/rec-2.jpg

Prior to watching [REC], I had seen its American counterpart, Quarantine in the theater, which I thought was utterly horrifying and brilliantly done. Because I had enjoyed the remake so much, I was really anticipating the original, especially because of the praise that it has gotten. However, I think that seeing the remake first might have taken a bit away from watching [REC], unfortunately; the remake was so faithful to the original to the point where the scares were predictable for me (not to say that they weren't good; I think that I would have enjoyed them more had I not seen the remake first). That being said, [REC] was quite good, but I have to say in all honesty that the liberties that were taken in the remake (slight change on the ending, for example), makes the remake a slightly better movie. Don't get me wrong, [REC] was quite good, but I think that Quarantine did it better for me.

Oh, and I have to mention that I was REALLY disappointed that our heroine is equally as obnoxious in the original as she is in the remake.

4/5.

Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Well, I won't write much on this one considering so much has been said already.
Sure, the movie's a blast; it's brash and arrogant; it's wildly creative, but what I think I enjoyed most about it is Tarantino's (finally) full commitment to doing whatever he wants. Because he's good at it; his mind takes stories into bold, surprising places. The film seems a series of strange catharses for the director and audience. With Inglourious Basterds, I feel like he's making (whether purposefully or inadvertently) a point on the power of cinema. Cinema can mold (and remold) history. And with this, in this case making a caricature of something as sacred as World War II history, perhaps it is to say "Let's not take ourselves too seriously." It's the kind of ethos Dušan Makavejev worked with, and it's a refreshing one.

Also I'll reiterate how wonderful the performances are (yes, especially Christoph Waltz). Also, I'll admit to a serious crush on Mélanie Laurent:

Zack and Miri make a Porno.

I cried. Kevin Smith is the only person I know who can make an genuinely entertaining movie where I laugh my ass off and end up moved to tears by the end of it. Chasing Amy made me think "this movie is rediculous" but by the end I was all weepy thinking "yeah, I could totally never have a threesome. I love my boyfriend". Zack and Miri was a million times better in that respect. After Zack and Miri's scene I just could not keep from crying.

Inglourious Basterds

A lot of praise has been given to this film so it probably needs a detractor...

That said, I doubt there's anybody who liked this film as much as I did. Worth the wait (the multiple films in between helped) and well worth my money. I'll be seeing it again soon.

Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Original Release (1976). Obtrusive, awkward, artistic, brilliant. Cosmo, played by Ben Gazzara, really does an effective job portraying a man that is truly "comfortable" with himself. The pretense of his character actually becomes him. Somehow, the camerawork at times seemed almost amateurish and the sound cheap and clunky, but this just added to the overall texture and brilliance of the movie.

The Virgin Spring (1960). Bergman takes a 13th century ballad and weaves it into a compelling story of the transition of Sweden from paganism to Christianity. For its day, the brutality of this one must have really struck some nerves. Ashe.

12 Monkeys, which I hadn’t seen since it came out. Still had some pleasing bits, but overall felt too long and as if the female lead wasn’t really a character at all, but rather something there to react in the ways that made the plot proceed.

Great Expectations (1946)

I loved it. David Lean directs everything so brilliantly, the black and white is absolutely phenomenal and fits the tone of the film spot on. The set design in the cemetery and everything else is just fantastic.

District 9 (2009)

2.5/5

Admirable in its attempts to reinvigorate a genre in need of a boost but ultimately exhaustingly repetitive. Like 2007's 'Cloverfield', the film utilizes documentary style footage to inject realism into the story- and this actually works very well here. In fact, stylistically, this is an enormous success; the aliens are believable, the enormous hovering spacecraft is chilling, the slum scenes are almost always effective. Unfortunately, the narrative restrictively follows one man in his encounter with the alien people; his character unlikable and poorly-written, and I almost immediately grew weary of his selfishness and stupidity-especially come the last forty minutes of the film where it goes from intellectual hypotheticals to action movie eye-candy. There is a political message in all of this explosive CGI mumbo-jumbo, but we're beaten over the head with it so much that it becomes contrived. When the credits roll the films has over-stayed its welcome.

Scanners

Good film and a good concept. The chilling sound made whenever a scan was taking place added another dimension to it and the effects in the final fight whilst very fake were still quite gruesome and sick. It was less of a horror film and more of an action, which I wasn't expecting.

I watched Crank: High Voltage today.
Apparently it's not coming out at the cinemas at all here which is a cunt...so yeah I downloaded a dvd rip of it, something I'd otherwise never do with a film I really wanted to see...but hey.
I liked it. Was pretty funny. Very weird.
Not quite the classic in my mind as the first one was and will be, but a nice follow up that had plenty of crazy.
I'll grab the dvd.

District B13 (2004). Not much of a plot in this one, but the great action makes up for it. The combination of martial arts and Parkour makes for some incredible action scenes, which really never get tiring. Good one to just chill out, shut down the brain, and enjoy. Ashe.

it was a weird little fish - who wanted to be human ... so she would sit on a big jellyfish - pull a small jellyfish over her body so she could be above water - but safe - when the big jellyfish went to the surface - sort of like a self contained water supply with a window.

so the poster is the fish peeking out from under the jellyfish
