Will have to check that one out...have the original 1927 that I still haven't watched yet.
THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE (1959). Way tasteless bold little flick that has a certain deviant charm to it. As 10CC'S pointed out "The things we do for Love"...

Plot:
When an eccentric family meets in their uncle's ancient mansion on the tenth anniversary of his death for the reading of his will, murder, madness (and comedy) follow.

Phantoms Review: Bob Hope's first starring role. Hysterically funny , but also is a beautifully filmed 'old dark house' style mystery. Plenty of laughs and old school chills. Very enjoyable.

I'll have to check that out. I might have seen it as a kid. Always liked Hope. And Bing more so.

Was always curious to see that film. So how would you rate it out of 10? (great song! one of the best compositions in rock).

Black Friday (1940)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...idayposter.jpg
Karloff plays a only slightly mad doctor who did a brain switch between a dying mobster and his fatally injured Academic friend. The Gangster (now in the other body) comes back incognito to get revenge on his old gang, lead by Bela Lugosi.

Though the 2 horror icons headline the poster, surprisingly it is the acting of Stanley Ridges that steals the show. He is hypnotic as he switches between the mild mannered professor and the tough guy mobster. The film is an entertaining watch but disappointing as Karloff and Lugosi never share a scene.

Sorry-guess I was zoning out after all the snow shoveling the last few days::embarrassment::. Would give TBTWD a ***1/2...not technically good, but pretty ballsy and sleazy for its time and well worth a look or two.

Blood Beast Terror

So I actually liked this. Its not without its flaws: Unexplained sciences, random hypnosis, transforming clothes, and a weak resolution. It has a good story though, a cool looking monster and is an enjoyable interesting watch.

The Colossus of New York

Really enjoyed this one. The monster is terrifying and I love the trope of ones hubris being their downfall. This movie also raises an interesting question of whether he was driven mad by his new monstrous body or by the absence of a soul.

THE MASK OF FU MANCHU (1932). Fantastic Boris Karloff vehicle which is full of sexual tension (Myrna Loy almost steals the film from Boris), unsavory torture and extremely non PC dialogue, all in 67 short frantic minutes. Could not have made this a couple of years later, for sure. ****1/2

The Innocents

This was a very suspenseful ghost story that I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It had some scary scenes, and it was really creepy and atmospheric. The kids put on unsettling performances while the governess also has an amazing performance. Would I buy this on DVD? Probably not, but it was an immensely unsettling gothic ghost story.

Told you that you'd like it. I'm curious though, if you liked it so much why wouldn't you buy it on DVD?

I dunno. I guess there's just some movies that I think are good that I don't really feel like watching again.

Hitchcock's Rebecca [1940]

Still a wonderfully atmospheric tale that take us away to a world where Cinderella really does marry the handsome prince and lives in the mysterious castle but things get spooky at night in swirling fog....

The Man from Planet X
http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/...psbaf1f52d.jpg

I enjoyed this movie but i feel like they could've done more with it. Due to the location it seemed really small and the original plot of the new planet coming closer to Earth didnt seem to matter anymore once the alien arrived. I get that it was just a precursor to the real plot and obviously thats what it's really about (It is called THE MAN from Planet X and not just Planet X) but it seemed like a big deal that should've been featured more. They also seemed to be confused on what they wanted to do with the alien as they seemed to shift his motives for being there and seemed like they just werent sure how to get there. The cast was good though and the alien was interesting looking (Sorta like a deformed Mr. Freeze.) Ultimately i enjoyed it but it wasn't one of my favorites from the decade.

Earth vs. The Flying Saucers
http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/...ps250c8996.jpg

I liked this one too. This one had a larger feel to it, it made the alien invasion seem like a serious threat as opposed to the small isolated incident in Man from Planet X. However the aliens in this had the laziest design i've ever seen. The story was interesting though i found the movie entertaining.

-------spoilers--------------------
I agree, they could have done a lot more with the story they started. I was really loving it through the part where 'the bad guy' got alone with the alien and started threatening the alien to coerce him into revealing all his technology. That should have been the film right there. But they go elsewhere, and it seemed unfocused to me.

Fantastic cinematography. Love the design of the alien and spacecraft.

George Lucas gives a homage to the Planet X Man in Star Wars Ep 2 with the Mech-alien species that turns it's chest knobs to adjust it's voice.

EYES WITHOUT A FACE 1960

couldn`t find an english language version online to watch so watched the original french language one instead, fantastic use of tension and suspense, great soundtrack and settings, very enjoyable even tho i couldn`t understand a word.

EYES WITHOUT A FACE is fantastic...incredibly creepy and the surgery scene is still hard hitting. Found my copy with subs from Video Screams.com.

Witness for the Prosecution 1957

7/10

Lots of fun, funny, plus murder mystery and court drama. Has Marlene Dietrich. On Netflix.

I'm watching Anatomy of a Murder next. Surprised I missed it all these years. Also on netflix.

Really like both of those, especially ANATOMY.

Anatomy of a Murder (1959)
9/10

Jimmy Stewart, George C Scott & a young Lee Remick (The Omen). In a murder trial, the defendant says he suffered temporary insanity after the victim raped his wife.

This is how a court drama is done. Thoroughly entertaining and interesting. Just a personal note, although I really like big band jazz, the jazz score seemed jolting & disjointed from some of the scenes, especially in the beginning.

Classic scene brings up why it's so good. I don't know if it's just me, but there's sympathy for the those fallen into to zombiehood. Like this scene, there's sympathy for the little girl, we know she 'doesn't know want she's doing', shouldn't have been left alone, the deep tragedy adds to the horror of it all.

Just like the first shot showing the naked woman zombie from behind, because the thought/feeling is, 'she doesn't know she naked', it's a sickness tragedy horror. Don't see that in horror film much anymore.

BRIDES OF DRACULA (1960). Good Hammer film that really could be better...script is very inconsistent and although Yvonne Maular is gorgeous (and nice when we met her), her character is as stupid as can be. On the plus side, really good production values, Peter Cushing is fantastic and for my money, Andree Melley is the ultimate vampire chick...feral, scary and sort of hot...she scared me big time when I was younger. ***

Could have been so much better with script tweaking. And totally agree about the brides "the ultimate vampire chick...feral, scary and sort of hot...she scared me big time when I was younger. "

You're most definitely right....a lot of the Hammers look so good with the sets, the colors and, of course, the glamour. However, many of their films are like the Universals and you have to suspend logic to enjoy them-but I certainly still do and they probably didn't realize what they had, as You said, and also figured no one would be talking about or loving so many of the films 50 some years  after most of them were released.

The best thing about "Brides" is Peter Cushing's kick ass Van Helsing character. A real man of action and intelligence. Always thought it was a shame Hammer didn't turn Van Helsing into a series of films with the good doctor fighting all kinds of supernatural beings. ::devil::

Agree..not the best, but fun in its own little way. THE UNEARTHLY (1957) is kind of more of the same, but a lot more fun. Tor Johnson, Alison Hayes, Sally Todd and Myron Healy are in it, but John Carradine grabs the ball from everyone and ratches it up big time..gotta love JC..he always gave 110%
