Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull

This movie overall after seeing it just wasn't necesary. Harrison Ford kept looking like he was going to break a hip, the entire family situation made it seem more like National treasure and the amount of times they survived incidents that only someone once in a million would was reidiculous.

Other than that it was fast paced and non stop action. It just holds nothing to the trilogy.

5.5/10

I thought it was pretty decent.
The characterisation felt like a bit of an eyeroller but the premise and plot are solid. Very good atmosphere created by some fantastic cinematography and artwork, nice use of symbolism and surreality, and complimented by some pretty neat direction.

I still prefer Altered States over this as my choice for Ken Russell. Havent seen some of his other works (Lair of the White Worm being the third one I ve seen), but I m pretty sure Altered States is his crowning achievement. Gothic would be second in line.

Dawn of the Dead (1978)

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/3...nofthedead.jpg

[Saw it for the first time:o]

This is a film that offers many things to many people - sharp consumer satire, black comedy, gore-splatter epic etc. Nevertheless it also shows a bleak, frantic worldview...one that encompasses all of mankind. And on that ground it's not a zombie movie or a common 'horror' film, to me it was a very human story. Like very few could have done, Romero's Dawn crosses the boundaries of its 'genre' and becomes a rare piece of milestone in the history of celluloid arts. It' a thrilling tale of survival & struggle of mankind against the nature, creatures and also within themselves like at a time of extinction or supposedly at a new beginning. The scariest part of the movie is how likely it makes the concept of total collapse of what we perceive as civilization. Such is Romero's skill as a director and writer that it manages to be all of these without pretension; more than 30 years on, this film's appeal still remains undimmed.

"Some kind of instinct. Memory, of what they used to do. This was an important place in their lives."

There are plenty of satirical moments between the explosions of violence and gore, moments that still make us realize to what extent the world has reverted to being a race of consumer zombies, congregating around massive shopping malls like they're the religious temples and trapped in not by so called 'freedom of choice', but mindless instincts. The overall sustained atmosphere, inside and outside of the bare environment of the shopping mall, is by far the film's salient contribution; even when there is no obvious action onscreen, there is the threat of an attack to come, and the clock is clearly ticking on the four protagonists. They discover the novelty of having as many of society's desirable goods as they could ever want wears off pretty quick when there's nothing on TV, nowhere to spend money and no one to appreciate expensive clothes and jewelry.

A beautifully frightening film...Romero's best.

Shadow Puppets

Truly awful. If not for Jolene Blalock wearing nothing but a tank top and panties for half the film, I wouldn't have finished it.

Alligator

Kick ass!

Night Of The Juggler

Really intense pacing, excellent cast this is a really great piece of cinema. Right up there with The Driver in the field of gritty no nonsense crime films.

And, despite its minor flaws, I would recommend Knowing highly too.
Not a big fan of Cage either, and a lot of his recent work HAS been pathetic, but the man has delivered when asked upon. Too bad its been few and far between.
Check out 8MM too, if you havent seen it already.

Second Adaptation and Wild at Heart for sure.

Also add Raising Arizona and Bringing Out the Dead.

Have either of you seen The Devils?
If not, then holy smokes...check it out.
It's the best Ken Russell film I've seen.

The Love Guru.

A ghastly Mike Myers style version of Will Smith's Hitch with jokes so pathetic I think Mike Myers may have used a three year old for ideas and inspiration. Horrible to watch Sir Ben Kingsley fall so low as to play an idiotic cross eyed Guru in this cheap abomination.

2/10

not bad adaptation of a Steven King story. Christian Slater was great in it.

Mike Myers always spoofs things that aren't American and he usually gets away with it

pretty ridiculous, I found it really funny at times though. jacques le coq grande was hilarious.

If you liked that, may I recommend A Room With A View and The Remains of the Day?
The latter one may be a bit slow to start off, but its a pretty solid movie overall.

Wassup Rockers

This ruled. The first half suggested it was goning to be Kids v.2 but it really exceeded my expectations by the end. Great soundtrack too. I dug this flick a lot. Check it out sometime people...

Death Warmed Up

Classic Kiwi splatter makes its way onto DVD. A lot of the plot isn't fully explained which kinda annoyed me (maybe I wasn't paying enough attention) but I ended up just sitting back and enjoying the ride. I'd love to see more stuff like this make its way out of NZ but it seems the country is determined to make Braindead 100000 times over. That shits tired as fuck NZ needs to go the dark and twisted route.

Absurd

Awesome stuff Anthropophagous had more creepy moments but this is a better flowing/crafted flick. It'd be great to see it tidied up for DVD but there's issues with the rights I believe. Essential viewing if you love your old school splatter/nasties.

Ugetsu monogatari (1954)

Poetic and haunting, like a dream which constantly threatens to become a nightmare but remains enchanting and calm. Not directed but orchestrated by Kenji Mizoguchi, this is a story about cause and effect; each action has a reaction and everything happens not in the manner of stage drama but instead with a natural urgency, and even when the story becomes harsh and incredible I believed and understood that what was done was done, that life is what it is. The story is helped by gorgeous set design, luscious costumes and serene camerawork, all of which form a kind of trinity of visual delight. The actors play their part with enthusiasm but also, again, with the mindset that there is nobody watching them and they are just going about their lives. This honest storytelling allows the supernatural drama to seem totally plausable, and consequently we notice no limitations to the tale.

The Betrayed (2008)

Cool be interested in reading what you think about it. It def belongs in that Punk Rock films thread from awhile back. I can see people not getting into it as much as I did.

Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974)

It was just OK. I can live without much of a plot, and I can take dull characters, and I'm not the type that needs non-stop action from start to finish...but still, there has to be something to hold my attention. This didn't have much at all - the actors seem like they're just phoning it in and you can't really care about any of the characters, the story is all but non existent, and even though it does have some damn cool chase sequences, they were way too few and far between to make things worthwhile. There was some nice conflict starting to come out near the end, but it was quickly dismissed - too bad.

Stick with stuff like Race With the Devil or Vanishing Point if you're into this kind of flick. This one isn't awful, but there's not much to see.

Thats the godzilla EDF ship right?

_____V_____ 07-30-2009 07:49 AM

Haha, yep. Its a hybrid of that and the spaceship of Star Blazers.

The flick was Japan's answer to Star Wars back in the late 1970s. Supposedly big-budget, and the last of Toho's big screeners of that era. The flick sunk, and Toho didnt reappear again till the late 80s.

Its a blast though. Total cheesy entertainment, if you are a fan of bad effects.

The_Return 07-30-2009 08:12 AM

Leaving Las Vegas (1995)

A bleak, depressing tale of alcoholism and tragic love story between two lost souls. Cage gives a powerhouse of a performance in the role that won him an Oscar - an award that he certainly deserved for his heart wrenching portrayal of a man at his absolute worst.

Unflinching and filled with talent, I'd highly recommend this one. It's not for everyone, but it still should be seen.

Disease 07-30-2009 08:29 AM

Journey to the Centre of the Earth (2008)

I was a bit tipsy and thought this would be a good idea, it was a bit of fun, but nothing memorable. Maybe if I was 8 I would dig it. I didn't get the 3D version either which sucks.

3/10

The Cry ~ what a bore. Picked up near the end, but not nearly enough to make it worth the watch. And I think they actually could have done a lot with the La Llorona legend.

The Dark Half ~ I still enjoy this movie a lot (my husband had never seen it, so I had to change that) and its not just because of Timothy Hutton (for some reason, he is still one of my favorite actors...lol)

Duplicity (2009)

http://l.yimg.com/eb/ymv/us/img/hv/p...mallposter.jpg

Surprised to see some reviews about complaining the plot was bit complicated & complex while I found it fairly easy to follow. Though it may not be a great film but a fairly done fun romantic espionage film by Tony Gilroy (Michale Clayton), with as usually fine performances by Roberts and Owen. Nevertheless, Giamatti and Wilkinson also shines nicely as great supporting cast but it'd be bit better if they could share & have more screen presence.

War in Space looks great. Haven't seen Boxing Helena since it first came out does it hold up well?

Grimm Love

Quite bland and it felt like they just skimmed the surface of the story. Didn't know much about the case going into it so it was an interesting enough introduction.

Wrestlemaniac

Nice lowbrow way to finish off the nights viewing.

Public Enemies

Didn't meet expectations, but it was done well enough and worth the watch. And he didn't have much to do, but Crudup was great.

Yes it does, actually. I had forgotten how shocked I was at the plot on my first viewing. It still hasnt lost that sucker punch, after close to umm...11 years now since the time I watched it.
The ending feels a bit atrocious but overall the premise and the moody atmosphere make this a novel watch.
Not easy for everyone to see this.
