La Notte (1961)
A film, as made clear through an encounter between a nymphomaniac and a married intellect, about control: what it is to have it, what it is to lose it. Antonioni isn't so much concerned with theses, but more with hypotheticals. He draws complexities without explanations, and this is the secret ingredient to his recipes; instead of searching for answers, he sketches ideas of human flaw and, most importantly, does not employ an eraser. The central characters- played delicately by Moreau and Mastroianni- begin together mechanically but not spiritually, and things get hazier from there. As the two leave the comforts of their small confines and enter a world with elements out of their control they begin an adventure of self-exploration and awakening. Monica Vitti, an Antonioni trademark of youth and beauty, comes between them not personally but symbolically; it isn't so much that this particular woman has created sexual insecurity and relational doubt between the couple but more that nothing stable holds them together. "Marriage" is a man-made state, and vows are made only of word. Somewhere beyond good intention lies a frightening world of temptation and doubt, and it can hide in the most subtle of places- the distress of a dying friend, a street fight, a party. A remarkable centerpiece in Antonioni's unofficial trilogy filled with an admirable uncertainty and a tremendous cast. |
Strangers in the City
Independent film from 1962 detailing the degradation of life lived by a Puerto Rican family in New York. Well meaning, but really bad. |
Stuck. This looked like it would be a fun movie to watch. It wasn't. Instead, it was a painful to watch flick centering on selfishness and cowardice, with a little horror sprinkled in for the heck of it. Not to say that it wasn't a great movie, it was. Talk about having a bad day. Sheesh.

Dead Wood ....not bad Brit indie flic.
The Last Remake Of Beau Geste...I used to think this was the funniest movie....not so much now but still worth a few chuckles. |
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)
Fantastic film. Great performances all around, shot beautifully in Technicolor, and the direction from Powell and Pressburger is so unique and wonderful. -10/10 |

This month on TCM they're saluting a different director every night (I believe tonight is Bergman). I know there's going to be a P & P night, so I eagerly await that. |

Ha, good stuff. |
Joshuu 701-gô: Sasori (Female Convict 701: Scorpion) (1972)
Still great, and surprisingly subversive. The shower fight scene is especially incredible. |

This one really impressed me. I went in with fairly low expectations, which might be why I enjoyed it so much. The whole concept is really cool, the script is well written and the actors do a great job with some really dark material. I'm not going to call it a new favourite or anything, but it's easily one of the best I've seen from the past couple years. Well worth a look. |

Finally got around to watching Slumdog Millionaire......very good but I could also see where V is coming from. Does not paint a pretty pic of India.

Doomsday. Not Neil's finest, but enjoyable in a James Bonds crossed with Mad Max sort of way. Plenty of gore, and a descently fun chase scene. Enjoyable enough i guess.
Premise Spoiler, sorta??? i kinda got lost in all of the political schananigans, but i am usually lost in this arena in the real world as well. Ashe d |

The Stepfather
It has a rather sinister vibe to it. It wasn't brilliant but not a bad slasher. It could have done with a few more kills though. I might check out the rest of the series. 6.5/10 |

Nan thought she's have a heart attack if we saw Drag Me to Hell  So I settled for this. Fun movie with some good effects but it left a lot of questions and many many plotholes. Still, as I said, it was fun. Very predictable. No better that the first one, not that I expected it to be. |
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)
Well, I can see why Tennessee Williams wasn't crazy about this one - there's no denying that it cuts/edits/alters some pretty major themes, ideas and passages - but barring comparisons to the original work, this is still a damn good film. A great example of a near perfect ensemble cast...Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor, Burl Ives, Judith Anderson are all equally fantastic, and even those with smaller parts like Jack Carson and Madeleine Sherwood still do a great job. I think the real standouts have to be Newman and Ives though...their scenes together are nothing short of electric. If you happen to be a Williams purist, this might not be the best choice (though it does keep the plot and characters pretty much faithful), but otherwise this is nigh on to a masterpiece. (Oh, and forgive me for a moment while I state the obvious: Elizabeth Taylor is one of the most gorgeous creatures ever to walk this earth) |
Indeed- you'd almost think Williams wrote Big Daddy with Ives in mind.

Now I was reading into some other film versions of this...I guess Laurence Olivier produced a TV version of this in the 70's, and cast himself as Big Daddy. I'd be rather intrigued to see how that turned out... |
Ex-Drummer
Still brilliant the second time around. If you haven't seen this get on to it ASAP Fire and Ice Dug this one a lot. Very keen on picking up the Blue Underground release of it. |
Sleepaway camp
Still a very cool slasher... The ending is still disturbing. 8/10 The Cheerleader Massacre Not to bad for a b grade modern slasher. The bridge scene is fucking hilarious. And what the hell was with the Slumber Party Massacre footage. I kept expecting it to break out into a full on hardcore porno at any minute though. 6/10 |

Nosferatu: Phantom der nacht (1979)
It had been a while since I'd seen this, but wow. Truly a masterpiece in its own right. It's more of a reworking of Stoker's novel paying homage to Murnau than an actual remake of Murnau's original film. Herzog takes liberties with the narrative, but stylistically it's as if Murnau had had 1979 filmmaking technology and equipment back in the early 1920s. The composition, lighting, and makeup all feel so classic. It's an incredible meeting of old school and modern renaissance filmmaking. An exemplary entry into the horror movie canon, and a wonderful work of art, period. Monks- the Transatlantic Feedback (2006) Talking about the Monks with Elvis in the current album thread made me want to watch this again. The Monks were one of the absolute most influential groups to come out of the 1960s...and no one's ever heard of them. This long overdue story of the band is not just about the history of the Monks, but a wonderful look into the spirit of the 1960s; the culture, the state of mind. Anyone who gives a crap about music at all owes it to themselves and to this groundbreaking, wildly and surreptitiously influential (and as much as I hate the cliche "ahead of their time", they truly were) group to give this one a watch. |
Hercules and the Barbarians (1960)
Another Italian sword & sandal epic pitting Hercules against the Mongol hordes. |

"Plague Town" 8/10 Yup, have to agree with mrbelle. Creepy looking youngsters. One of the best horror movies i've seen in 2009. The ending could have been a little longer tho, and the director should've spend more than the last minute of the movie explaining what was going on and why. Coz that was quite interesting. http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p17/Kasper_76/00.jpg |
