Alright, my 70's list is in.

That was pretty overwhelming. I ended up not voting for any by personal favorites because there would have been just too many.

I only voted for ones that I think meant the most to the genre historically, financially and just plain made the biggest significance to the genre today.

Me too - 70s is a lot easier for me than earlier decades. I probably could have done okay with 60s but I'll have to go back and read if I've missed my chance on that one. I'd like to participate in 70s if that's cool.

I was wondering, would it make sense to add Straw Dogs to the list? IMDB doesn't have it categorized as horror. Not sure if it's in my top 20 yet without listing them, but it might be if it were a candidate.

To be honest, I can only select 5 from the debatable section- Bucket of Blood, Teenage Werewolf, Revenge of Frankenstein, Bad Seed, and Incredible Shrinking Man.

All the rest seem like they are more squarely in the science fiction realm, except Rear Window, which is more of a drama or thriller.

There are others from the minority section, which IMO, are more worthy of inclusion in the top 20 horror films from the 50s, such as The Abominable Snowman, Night of the Hunter or Hunchback of Notre Dame.

From the Debatable section i would choose Bucket of Blood, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, The Revenge of Frankenstein, The Thing from Another World, The War of the Worlds and Tarantula

All of these i think are classics with strong staying power evidenced by the fact that some of them have been recently remade and have influenced other recent movies. Besides that fact they are excellent monster movies which excellently represent the time period in which they were made.

From the Minority section i would pick Invaders from Mars, Rodan, The Amazing Colossal Man, The Crawling Eye, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame as they are also excellent movie from that time period.

The Bad Seed (1956)

Not only a true pioneer classic for the sub-genre of Evil child movies but as a film, in terms of making, characterization & a theme that was way ahead of its time...The Bad Seed is a much deserving film to be in any greatest lists for 50s Hollywood masterpieces. It's always a great challenge to tell such a sensitive story within a limited set up & few characters and the director Mervyn Leroy did an excellent job in creating an utterly gripping atmosphere where we see a psychological cat & mouse game between a helpless mother & her evil little girl. The very young Patty McCormack playing the title character Rhoda Penmark was a remarkable delightful watch. I strongly recommending this movie along with The Incredible Shrinking Man (If u haven't then please read NE's blurb in the HDC's top 100 list to understand the significance of this true gem) to get in the final cut. It'll be a great disappointment if we fail to recognize the greatness of the movies like this ones.

Thanks to roshiq for backing the inclusion of Straw Dogs. Anyone else? I realize this isn't a pure horror genre movie, but it's close. It serves as a direct reference for any post-1971 home invasion movie. I assume House on the Edge of the Park will be included on the 80s list since IMDB classifies it as horror. Straw Dogs is much scarier and actually employs horror filmmaking techniques, which can't really be said about Edge of the Park. The movie throughout has a constant feeling of pending doom. I also think a good case can be made that if Last House on the Left, Deliverance and maybe I Spit on Your Grave, are included, then Straw Dogs should be included.

That being said, no big deal if it's not included. Everyone's got their own definitions.

Regarding A Clockwork Orange, I'm almost inclined to retract my suggestion to add it because it is so debatable. It's clearly not a horror genre movie, the cheery British tone plays more like Terry Gilliam than any horror movie, and a good portion of the film (the middle, prison portion) has no relationship to horror at all.

However, if these lists are about the most important movies in horror history (as opposed to the best horror movies in horror history), it would be a shame not to recognize it. The new level of on-screen violence, the trademarked and stylized predatorial antagonist, the themes of home invasion and physical and psychological torture, the creepy music and visuals, employing metal tools as torture instruments on the eyeballs, revenge torture, the fact that now when I hear "Singin' in the Rain" or Beethoven's 9th, I think of brutal violence and rape -- all of these are significant contributions to the horror genre, not sci-fi, which is the genre the movie is more likely to be classified as.

As I mentioned, I'm totally fine with not including it because it looks a little weird on my list next to The Exorcist, Halloween and Dawn of the Dead, but I'll leave you with these images for your collective consideration.

I'll definatly throw an extra vote to Bucket of Blood, looks like it is already gonna get there, but I want to back two movies that I really expected to see with more votes than just mine.

Dementia: Low budget masterpiece, surreal film noir/ horror complete with an amazing example of a sexy female anti-hero. Quality score, quality concept, just a brilliant movie with bags of atmosphere. AKA Daughter of Darkness, try to watch the original version, not the version with the cheesy narration overdub. Awesome movie, way ahead of its time, plenty of faults but really think it is more than worthy of a top 20 spot...

El Vampiro: So, while I wasn't that surprised to see Dementia didn't feature in many/ any lists but mine, I was kinda surprised to see this movie not getting a few more vote. This, in my opinion, is an essential inclusion in the top 20. Predating hammer's Horror of Dracula you get this beautiful mexican offering filled with all the tropes that made Christopher Lee a horror icon. Beautiful cinematography, great atmosphere, sleek and stylish. This is a must watch for any fan of horror and to see Horror of Dracula in the top 20 and El Vampiro slip out with just one vote would be a tragic. If this movie didn't inspire hammer's Dracula, it was certainly a reference point. Really urge people to give this a watch if they havent seen it already.... Gonna link one scene from youtube, keep in mind while watching the scene that this movie predates Horror of Dracula. Pay attention to the score, the atmosphere, the shots and the style, could so easily be watching hammer's Dracula..... Please give it a watch.

Lots of great movies. I would only consider Rear Window a non-horror movie, though that's totally subjective. Obviously a ton of these are sci-fi, but I wouldn't say they aren't horror, unless anyone wants to say The Thing 82 isn't a horror movie.

From your list of films on the borderline...

I think these 4 films stand as colossal great films of the wider horror genre. If I may include all of them at once, these films are full stories, based on books, amazing ideas full of ramifications to life, true classics:

These three are the same types of movies, but the stories/films are not quite as epic:

This was even more difficult than the 60s. My first draft had 34 titles. Had to cut a lot of personal favorites. A lot of old school got cut in favor of more modern horror. By the 70s Hammer's Frankenstein and Dracula films were stretching a bit thin for plot lines, so even though I love them, I cut them all. My final cut was The Other, which is an excellent horror film, and deserving of a place in the top films of the 70s. That's how brutal it got. So much of the weird, low-budget, sleazy horror of the 70s... I cut it all.

For the 50's I'll add my backing of

Certainly an intriguing clip. While I see influence on Hammer there, I also see nods to Lugosi and other vampire films of the 40s and 50s. An important transitional film, for sure.

No doubt. The 80s are going to be impossible to cut down to 20. Seriously though, to prevent the 80s final list from being nothing but the staples, maybe we should submit 30 or more. :)
