I liked Absentia, as a low budget indie flick it did quite good with atmosphere & character development. But in case of OCULUS...I thought it could have been better or more interesting if they avoided or excluded those "ghostly figures with glass eyes" and focused more on psychological horror segment of the story. The story wasn't bad, liked the idea of a mirror with diabolical power to manipulate people around it & play tricks on them to kill or destroy each other but those "ghostly figures with glass eyes" looked kinda cheap & lame. I guess there are some parts where they might have needed to show some 'corporeal ghosts', in that case the effects or looks of the ghosts needed to be much better & creepier.

Interesting twist on the timeless, classic fairy fable. Jolie, with her high-set and razor-sharp cheekbones, is perfectly cast. Rest of the actors rally well around her but Sharlto Copley feels out of place. Well-done effects add to the goodness.

If you are an ardent fan of Sleeping Beauty and the pure evil of Maleficent, best stay away. This is a tale of the other side of evil - an anti-heroine with a heart, who breaks everything, and mends it all back.

Yes, even THE kiss comes from her.

I'm not a huge fan of Angelina Jolie, but I admit, this movie intrigues me. I'll more than likely give it a watch.

I guess it was alright. I saw it over the summer with my mom, and I didn't totally hate it.

Yeah, in the ads I thought that the ghosts looked lame but it worked for me when I finally saw it (could be that it put me on edge and ANYthing would have scared me at that point, but still...)

I hadn't put it together that Flanagan, the director had also done Abenstia. I thought that Absentia was a damn good and creepy low-budget flick. I was honestly impressed with that one.

Tom Cruise's turn to live through Groundhog Day through an alien invasion. Cruise haters would have a ball watching him die umpteen times (and then some, and some more), but thankfully the film doesn't try to take itself too seriously. It's actually much better than Oblivion (Cruise's last sci-fi/action effort), and is helped immensely by a pacy script and excellent supporting actors, notably Bill Paxton who's perfectly cast in his role. The tongue-in-cheek humor and the largely-subdued Cruise do make for some good viewing.

The cinematography is excellent and the effects are superb. It will remind you of one of those 8-bit ultra-hard video games which you played back in the early 90s, where you died umpteen times and started back from the beginning over and over again.

BTW, a gripe I had was with the alien drone design, which was simply too similar to the Sentinels from The Matrix. But don't let that deter you too much - just watch the film and use two hours of your life for a good dose of fun and enjoyment.

Ginger Snaps (2000)
6/10

I thought it was OK. The first half was intriguing. Getting to know the two sisters, their relationship with each other & their mom, & young womanhood. Found the last half and ending disappointing.

Katharine Isabelle sure was smokin...
cigarettes. All the teens were smoking cigarettes. Was that symbolism, a story device (it wasn't just the sisters), or does every highschooler in Canada smoke? Just curious.

SPOILERS....................
The slow change to werewolf, relating to puberty, specifically for a woman, was a nifty story device. But a little bit past the midway point, there was very little development, and it got fairly stale to me. Although the older sister (Ginger) continued the change to the obvious outcome (animalistic, in both ways), there was no more reveal, development nor change of the younger sister, nor their relationship. So I was waiting for the end for the last half of the film... which just seemed a bunch of filler of teen angst, smoking & saying f*ck... I was starting to think this was just for teens.

Also, I thought the ending was disappointing, as it seemed abrupt, contrived & not a resolution to all the interesting aspects of the film, namely: puberty, sisterhood, daughter-mother. I'm all for 'unhappy' or 'realistic' endings, but it should still be the film's resolution. Film saying menstruation means the end of sisterhood & motherhood relationship, or AIDS is deadly? If the ending attempted to say puberty brings an end to childhood relationships & begins new adult relationships, I'd be fascinated; but I didn't see any attempt at resolution.

Am I expecting too much from a horror film? Maybe, but I got the impression Ginger Snaps was something more, not just something a little different.

Dead Silence 2007
6/10

A quality made film. I found quite scary at parts. The cinematography, sets, lighting, sound, and constructed shots of scary scenes, were really well done. It peaked high on my scary meter.

The story, plot and characters, were not nearly on par with everything else I mentioned. I'm not citing the actors, they didn't have much to work with. The story/plot/characters were shallow.

Too bad the producers didn't use some of this large budget to hire a good writer to expand on the story concept adding depth to plot & character; cause with this directorial team, this could have been a huge film hit.

Horns (2014)
Meh. First half was alright after that I started caring less and less.
I was mainly disappointed because I expected something different.
Then when I realised what kind of story it was I still thought it was pretty dumb.

The Best Offer (2013)

http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p...psda0b3ed8.jpg

Geoffrey Rush once again elegantly shines through here with the lead role of Virgil Oldman, a master auctioneer & an eccentric genius art-expert, known and appreciated by the world. Donald Sutherland plays his close & old friend Billy Whistler who helps him to acquire a secret private collection of master paintings. And then there is Robert, played by the young, talented Britt actor Jim Sturgess who is not only a great craftsman for any sort of "Clock Work" but also a love expert and becomes a close & friendly adviser for Oldman when this brilliant auctioneer & secret art collector becomes obsessed with an extremely reclusive young heiress, Claire Ibbetson who always refuses to be seen in person. And they all get tied up into this twisted tale of undeniable love & a web of mysteries & suspicion.

Comes from the maker of MALENA (2000), this 'GEOFFREY RUSH' film is so beautifully filmed that the little predictable twist at the end not even going to ruin your fun by any means. And for that the credit goes to the awesome cast who just made this film an utterly delightful watch from start to finish.

Highly recommended to V, NE, hammy & newb. You'll have a great time for sure.

Don't Blink (2014)

Oh man! and I thought this was going to be one of those films...where recently dead people take their time to realize what actually happened to them. But it wasn't that kind of movie but I like to tell you what was this all about...some guy gave a fascinating but incomplete idea to the writer/director Mr. Travis Oates and then vanishes without a trace!! ::big grin::

Anyway, just for the good production value, good cast and a seemingly 'interesting plot'...

Devil

"Devil" is quite silly at times, but at least it's entertaining and sometimes very thrilling. The acting isn't very good, and the characters are rather generic: overly-serious black guy, crazy old lady, asshole businessman, and boring guy and girl. Many plot points are so silly that they are unintentionally funny. Apparently, you know the devil is near if a child hits his head on the table when he falls, and suicide notes are either completely insane or completely rational, never both. I think I liked this movie because it's sort of a modern version of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" which is one of my all-time favorite novels. I recommend it if you can get past the sillier plot points.

Hostel: Part II

If I had to describe this movie in one word, it would be "trashy". Part 2 is almost exactly the same as the first movie, except the three guys are replaced with three women (one is hot off the set of the Princess Diaries), and the gore is so much more gratuitous. There is absolutely no tension or suspense in the movie, mostly because we've seen it all before in the first one. I guess what we're supposed to be scared of is a woman taking a bath in blood and a man getting his dick ripped off. The "protagonists" are so boring that I seriously thought that there were only two girls and not four, and the acting is absolutely horrendous. Where the first one had legitimate suspense and a sort of Wes Craven type vibe to it, this one is just... trashy. "Hostel: Part II" is possibly one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

Revisited it last night. Genuinely creepy, and still pretty effective. If only Harry Potter wasn't the lead character with his completely wooden smug filling the frames.

If you thought that a 2 hour, 45 minute-film filled with incessant explosions and metal-clanging is a fun ride, think again. I had to actually stop the film at the 1 hour, 40 minute-mark and take a 10-minute break just to give some respite to my ringing ears and continuously vibrating, screeching brain.

A totally unnecessary sequel with a non-existent plotline. At times even the characters must be wondering what the heck they were supposed to do. They could have easily cut at least 30-45 minutes of unnecessary chit-chat and kept the film's duration under tolerable time limits. Some of the dialogues make you want to shoot the screenplay writer. And, as if the giant robots weren't enough, we now have super-giant dinosaur transformers! As for the characters, Wahlberg seems totally lost, a chick who's in it just to show off her legs, her beau who's only expertise is to (supposedly) dodge exploding bombs in race cars, and a couple of talented actors such as Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammer who are totally wasted.

CGI is supposed to make audiences go "WOW!". But in this extremely overdone blockbuster, Bay has stretched the limits of it. So much so, that I was yawning all through the final half hour of the film.

Another sequel after this? Thanks, but no thanks.

Not much different than your typical 80s slasher. The villain is this half-human warhammer swinging demonic priest that resembles Pinhead from Hellraiser very much. I liked it. The acting, camerawork etc. is fine and there was a couple of really cool kill scenes. Not anything revolutionary, but pretty much nice slasher worth checking out.

LAND OF THE DEAD (2005)-While this can't hold a candle to NIGHT, DAWN and DAY, still a good little film I like. Moves well and nice cast in here, although I find Dennis Hopper remarkably restrained...was expecting SPEED/BLUE VELVET ranting! ***1/2

You know, I saw Mimic at the theatre with a buddy and fan of Del Toro, and we had to laugh at a lot of scenes (where it wasn't supposed to be funny). And I swear, we saw a boom mic hanging down into one of the shots in the tunnel. I we were disappointed with Mimic, I mean it was OK, but I thought there were a lot of painful flaws.

Just took a peak at rottentomatoes, I see it we weren't the only ones, it has a 36% rotten audience rating - 45,000 ratings.

Could easily have been called First Blood 2 (or is it 3?).

The whole movie plays like a mix between First Blood and The Fugitive, with Tommy Lee Jones doing what he does best. Playing Tommy Lee Jones.
Highly entertaining movie with lots of action, and the hand-to-hand combat scenes between Toro and Lee Jones were really well choreographed.
