The Virgin of Nuremberg (1963)

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_6ALEeRJ308...norimberga.jpg

Antonio Margheriti was just warming up with his gothic castle spooky film skills with this one before going on to create the classics, The Long Hair of Death and Castle of Blood. None the less, this is an enjoyable cobwebbed tale of Hooded Killers, Nazi Torture and a goose stepping Chris Lee. Might make a good double bill with the seteroid soaked shocker, The Crimson Executioner.

The Villain 12-27-2013 03:15 AM

the Abominable Snowman with Peter Cushing.

A little slow in the beginning but it picks up when they get up in the mountains. Cushing was great as always.

Didn't watch it but saw a copy of Herschell Gordon Lewis's GRUESOME TWOSOME at a local second hand video store today. Anyone see it? Is it worth the $7.00 price tag?

Any thing by Herschell Gordon Lewis is worth $7.
When HG shoots a talking head sequence he does it right :-)

Gruesome Twosome was the first HG Lewis film I watched. Great stuff definitely worth $7.

The Last Man on Earth

Had a silent film day on Sat. The Man Who Laughs, Nosferatu and Phantom of the Opera.

Finally got around to seeing House on Haunted Hill, the old one, of course. It was as schlocky as I expected it to be. Interesting to see they used the classic Ennis Brown house for the exterior shots. As a horror movie this one was rather flat, but I kind of expected that. So many of the horror movies of that era were. The one thing I liked about it is the fate of Price's character, usually movies from the 50's usually reserve a unkind fate for such a conniving character.

I Spit on Your Grave (1959)
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ps2b0bf466.jpg
Wanted to see this one for years after reading the book. And yes, this is the film that Jerry Gross stole the title off to release his 'Day of the Woman'.
The film revolves around a pale skinned black guy who 'passes the colour line' to enact revenge on white society for the lynching of his brother. Not as nasty or hard hitting as the book or as exploitative as I would have liked. It's still a good watch, a shocker for it's time and has a groovey score too.

Wow! I had no idea...

Planet of the Vampires 1965

A Mario Bava film. A great plus is this is English dubbed, and you get to hear the voice of Racer X and Pops, as Peter Fernandez and Jack Curtis lend their iconic voices. They really got around.

The set design, props and costumes are fantastic. They are right out of a sci-fi pulp magazine.

The synopsis is great, but the script and acting are somewhat dull and stiff. It is notable, the movie Alien 1979 (and Prometheus) owes a lot to Planet of the Vampires. (And Planet of the Vampires owes to the story "Who Goes There?") The plot is basically the same -- a broadcast signal brings a ship to investigate. They find a very old space ship with the bones of the giant alien travelers who came before them. The new arrivals face the sme fate, as they are taken over by the planet's parasitic hosts... who get inside them.

Young and Innocent (1937)

Quite an early film of Sir Alfred Hitchcock. I wanted see some pure classic era film with my wife & so when I opened my little pack for classic movie dvds, she picked it just looking at that cover :) Overall, a decent time passing romantic thriller with a funny little twist at the end...for which, I think the title could be....The Eyes that Blinks Too Much! ::smile::

Excellent, atmospheric French thriller. Its hard to watch totally objectively these days as the plot has been so done so many times since.

Enjoying the original Night of the Living Dead (1968) on Chiller.

I always thought this was one of the better Hammer films; rich sets, color and atmosphere.

phantomstranger 03-04-2014 06:53 PM

A group of friends and I got together over the weekend to watch these classics:
"King Kong vs Godzilla"
Not my favorite Godzilla film, but entertaining nonetheless.
"Trog"
Joan Crawford's last film and what a lousy way to go out. Hysterically bad film.
"Batman"
The 1966 Adam West adventure. Goofy as hell, but I love it.

phantomstranger 03-15-2014 09:27 PM

White Zombie"(1932)
-Bela Lugosi

Phantoms Review: Don't expect to see violence, action and gore with this movie, this is classic old style horror. Spooky, atmospheric and very melodramatic. Lugosi is at his best in this creepy little thriller. Very enjoyable.

Jack the Giant Killer (1962)
http://horrorcultfilms.co.uk/wp-cont...ant_killer.jpg
This is a childhood fave of mine. The scene with the first monster is just fantastic. Watch as part of an 'Irish' double bill for Paddys Day.

I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN (1957) on an old VHS I still have. Find this quite enjoyable with Whit Bissell getting in some zingers in dialogue and pretty gory for the time and AIP. Hope this comes out on a good quality DVD double feature (I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF) with commentary and maybe the Alice Cooper song "Teenage Frankenstein" as well. ***1/2

Actually watching DEAD OF NIGHT 1945 for the first time after seeing it mentioned in this forum. Its in 7 parts on YouTube and that's where I watch most of my movies. I just finished part 3.

The Bloofer Lady 03-21-2014 03:06 PM

HORROR HOTEL AKA CITY OF THE DEAD 1960.

A reclusive town, a student studying the history of witchcraft and lots of graveyard atmosphere and fog....(lots of fog). Great stuff.

Love that film-did you finish it? What did you think of it?

The atmosphere in that is amazing another film I love. ::smile::

Fears, I did watch the rest of DEAD OF NIGHT 1945 but found myself really only enjoying it from the ventriloquist story to the end. This may have come from watching it in 7 different parts. I do love the Hollywood glamour of these old films...the men almost always in suits and the women beautifully turned out, day or night.

As for CITY OF THE DEAD 1960, Mr. Lee's worldly good looks and commanding voice also add to any movie he's in.

"Viy" (1967) 6/10

Fairly amusing but the story was kind of a bore. The ending was good tho.

That IS a great film with a lot of atmoshere...reminds me a lot of PSYCHO (the same year) in spots.

ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1932). Classic flick covering all kinds of pleasant subjects like vivisection, torture, bestiality, rape, highly suspect experiments etc etc with all sorts of fiendish faces throughout. No way it could have been made a couple of years later. While I love the Universals, Paramount really had some balls with their early 30's films. *****

Dracula has risen from the grave (1968)

FryeDwight 04-03-2014 03:11 AM

I remember seeing an article about this film in my first FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND (#59 around Sept/Oct 1969- I was 7) and those photos of Chris Lee with the stake through his heart:scared to death:!! Didn't see it proper until I was almost 30 and it seemed so quaint, compared to some of the gruesome stuff I was watching in the 80's.
Got in BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. still *****

bamahorrorfan87 04-03-2014 06:57 PM

not horror but No Time for Sergeants 1958

FryeDwight 04-05-2014 02:54 AM

THE UNEARTHLY (1957). Don't know if I'd call this a classic, but it sure is fun with John Carradine playing a mad scientist and carving enough ham for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and maybe even Easter! JC carries it on his thin shoulders and gets in some great lines as well. ***1/2

FryeDwight 04-10-2014 05:35 AM

MAN MADE MONSTER (1940). Short and sweet Universal flick that I think was Lon Chaney Jr;s first big role. Lionel Atwill plays yet another mad doctor that is crazier than a shithouse rat and is a joy to watch, especially his pleading with Samuel S. Hinds not to turn him in before using other methods to his benefit. ***

'It Conquered The World' (1956)
-Peter Graves, Lee Van Cleef

Plot: A misguided scientist leads an alien to earth in hopes of saving mankind from itself, but instead it's the beginning of an invasion.

Phantoms Review: One of the great Drive-In monster movies of the'50's. This one has it all, square jawed American hero, mislead scientist, pretty girls, bumbling military and of course, a giant carrot from outer space. A Roger Corman classic.

The Bloofer Lady 04-10-2014 05:16 PM

THE GORGON 1964

Peter Cushing/Christopher Lee

Creepy yet charming tale based on Greek mythology. Lovely spooky atmosphere, quite enjoyable.
