i'm gonna track this one down asap.

last seen ..

the second garfield movie - whatever the hell it was - the one in england.

i fell asleep - not even the beautiful and sadly underapreciated Jennifer Love Hewitt could keep me a wake for this one.

Revolutionary Road - Wow, did this movie make me angry, but in good way. So relatable and real. A very poignant film.

You think? I mean, it's a great movie for sure. But how about 2001: A Space Odyssey? A Clockwork Orange? Dr. Strangelove?

I'd take The Killing over 2001 any day, the other two would be tough...

If I was just grading the acting, it would get an F, but the story kept me intrigued.

Its a really, really wonderful flick. Exquisite, brilliant and thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to last.

I am one who thinks 2001 is a bit overrated and over-hyped. This one is definitely above that.

As regards the other two, maybe on par or just below A Clockwork Orange and Paths of Glory (which is undoubtedly the best take on anti-war I ve seen, ever) and definitely a big notch below Dr Strangelove, which I consider to be the best Kubrick has ever done.

This would be my Kubrick preference chart :-
  • Dr Strangelove
    A Clockwork Orange
    Paths of Glory
    The Killing
    The Shining
    Full Metal Jacket
    Barry Lyndon
    2001 A Space Odyssey

...in that order.

The rest of his flicks come below all those.

I've never really got 2001.

2001: A Space Odyssey is better enoyed if you give up trying to "get" it. It is what it is, and that's part of why Kubrick was so concrete about keeping any of his personal beliefs on its meaning to himself. It is the most beautiful marriage of images and music ever put to celluloid; it is an odyssey of sight and sound meant to provoke curiosity and wonder. It is a statement of the infinity not only of film but also of human advancement. Trying to grasp any kind of firm judgement of its meaning will only give you a migrain; instead, let yourself be taken by it and see where you get.

Now, I'm not saying "you're wrong" or "I'm right", I'm just suggesting another viewing with a different train of thought.

------------------

Doubt (2008)

A film which is what it is because of several dynamite performances. Though the execution is a little light, the story plays out with muscle as it weaves from one big scene to the next, intricately building character tension but never (and this is important) assuring its audience in any direction. Philip Seymour Hoffman is brutally human, and the innocence of Amy Adams' character is honest, but the real star of the film is Meryl Streep; she is a weak and troubled character, so much so that watching her is scary, and sometimes shameful. This is a chilling performance, and one of the year's very best.

I had the GREAT fortune of seeing 2001 in its initial release in one of the country's tru Cinerama theatres on a near 180 degree screen. TWICE. Visually stunning is an understatement. It was mindblowing. It's the only way to really see that movie.

Memento

First time, finally. Worth however long I waited for whatever reason I did. One of the two movies I've watched recently that made my jaw drop (the other was the closet scene in Burn After Reading.) I really can't wait to watch it again, even though I know how it ends, erm... starts.

Its a gorgeous flick alright. Some of the cinematography is absolutely stunning and lingers in the mind long after the flick is over. Unlike Ferret, I liked it for the way Kubrick presented his vision - but I didnt really enjoy it as much as Dr Strangelove or Paths of Glory, or even The Killing.

You can say its a 8.8/10 flick for me, when compared to a 9.8 (Dr Strangelove), 9.6 (Paths of Glory) and 9.5 (for both A Clockwork Orange/The Killing).

I saw it once..I think that was years ago. You gave me a good reminder for another viewing that I have been thinking for last couple of months.:)
Moreover, recently an Indian action film (Ghajini) also somewhat reminds me about Memento. :D

I have seen The Killing but 9.5 I think is bit overrating. I think a 8/10 is fair enough grade for it in compare to the uniqueness, depth and presentation of the stories and making parts of Kubric's others that you mentioned.

Donkey Punch (2008)

Started with chicks, drugs and explicit sex scenes that leads to the "Donkey Punch" tragedy!:D And after that 'accident' it was a nice thrill ride till the end.

Now that's the film Raimi needs to remake.

I watched "The Incredibles" while ironing. I always just watch stuff I've already seen while ironing, nothing should split your attention from an as-yet unwatched film.
Still fun, I've always enjoyed this one...keeps well...

I am sincerely jealous. I hope I get the opportunity to see it on a real screen before I die. That and Lawrence of Arabia.

Defiance (2008)

Wow. Completely unremarkable, maudlin, and melodramatic.
Essentially the altering and exploitation of an inspiring true story that comes off as cheap pathos.
This one's sure to keep your eyes rolling.

"Return To House ON Haunted Hill" (2007)

A professor, a couple of students, some bad guys and the sister of the woman who survived the remake, all return to the spooky old asylum to look for an ancient idol with supernatural powers.

A straight to DVD sequel to a remake. Utterly ridiculous. Terrible story and not a scare anywhere in the movie. It is better acted than most Straight To DVD movies. but that's not saying much. Don't waste your time on this one.

I thought it was ASS.
After Whalberg being in the much better SHOOTER, I expected more.
How they managed to emulate the LOOK of the game so well without any atmosphere is beyond me.
...and I found the bullettime scenes STUPID.
And where's the cool music gone?
A little girl to play a woman.
...and NO FUCKING "THE BASEBALL BAT" scene.
Seriously, PAYBACK did Max Payne better.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

Impressive, but not as good as everyone says. I really enjoyed it, but I wouldn't really call it the best sci-fi movie of all time. Well written and acted, with a great score...but severely lacking in the plot department.

I'm sure it's still 10 million times better than the Keanu version...blech.

You Can't Take It with You

Frank Capra can NEVER disappoint. At first glance, this one seems a bit weak compared to masterpieces like It Happened One Night or It's A Wonderful Life, but once it gets going it turns out to be one of Capra's funniest films, not to mention incredibly touching.

The cast is perfect...Lionel Barrymore is at the top of his game, I don't think I've ever seen him give a better performance. Jean Artur is adorable as always...Jimmy Stewart doesn't really get a lot to do until near the end, but he's wonderful too. And the entire supporting cast is a riot.

If you're looking for a film that's just flat out fun - here you go. I can't see how anyone could possibly be upset after watching this one.

fortunato 01-18-2009 10:50 PM

Guy Maddin's Brand Upon the Brain! (2006)

Seriously! Has anyone seen this? I'm really smitten with it. It's my fourth time watching it in the past month or so.
It's such a horrifying, hyper-kinetic evocation of nostalgia, how childhood memories always seem to be remembered as grand adventures, and how disturbing, exciting, and dangerous it can be to dwell on and live by them. Of course, it's done with a flair for wild imagination and a profound inspiration from scratchy old silent (horror) films.

It's autobiographical in the same way that Kurt Vonnegut's Slapstick is autobiographical.

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (1976) - 9.5/10.

Excellent psychological thriller. With the exception of a few issues with the music this film was near perfect.

What amazes me is how people say they liked the script and acting. The acting is some of the worst acting I've ever seen. And I loved how every time the killer is chasing someone they fall down, literally every time. The script was your basic slasher script, nothing original. Throughout the whole movie it's just scenes of oh...heres the killer chasing some dumbass who trips over everything, screaming while the killer is in her face and doesn't even attempt to get away. Thats all the movie is, a bunch of random death scenes. Completely unoriginal movie.

My Bloody Valentine is a complete and utter homage to the 80s slasher film. The POINT of the gore is to emphasize and sensationalize an entire DECADE of horror that was obsessed with sex, blood, knives, and penetration. Each kill shot was composed BRILLIANTLY and giving nod to everything from Friday the 13th to Fulci's Zombie II.

Why is the script unoriginal and derivative? WHY do you have your pitiful fleeing victims repeatedly falling over themselves?! BECAUSE IT'S A PURPOSEFUL DERIVATION! My Bloody Valentine is spoofing the horror that came before, and EVEN spoofing splatter geniuses that came after! (I mean, part of the POINT of the splatterpunk genre is trying to one-up what came before you... Well, what better way to outdo your predecessors BUT DO IT IN 3D!!!!) Gratuitous? Superfluous? Unnecessary? ABSOLUTELY!!!!!

And did my boyfriend and I love it??? - ABSOLUTELY!!!

While the casual (pedestrian) horror viewer might look at this film as complete and utter horror tripe, My Bloody Valentine is an intelligent esoteric nod to horror fanboys.

For fans of the genre - Absolutely go see this film.

It's a guilty pleasure BLAST!
