It is a really strange film, but I like it quite a lot. Found it better than most French horror flicks that are well done, but a bit overrated.

The Alphabet Killer (2008)

Quite dull & frustrating.

An intelligent film which not only succeeds at pure and natural entertainment but also as a commentary on entertainment itself. Just like a certain 1941 Preston Sturges movie, the revelation of the power of laughter (especially in its superiority over terror) is a theme both maturely complex and innocently simplistic. Backed by a superb voice cast and an elite direction team, the film also serves as an incredible milestone in animation; hair waves, eyes water, bodies move rhythmically with breath. And best of all, the film ends on what is probably Pixar's most touching final note- a sweet and gentle sigh of kindness.

One of my favorites:)

My last seen was 28 Weeks Later. I'm pretty behind, I know. But luckily I signed up for Netflix last month (and am open to any suggestions).
I thought it was done well, I mean, I almost vomited once or twice, but still. I don't know why I have trouble with gore now, I never did before. Maybe I'm getting old:rolleyes:
Anyway. It seemed like it's going into a trilogy....?

Mission to Mars.

I liked it.

Tonight I watched the 1973 Hammer Horror move "The Rites of Dracula" also known as the "The Satanic Rites of Dracula".

The Deer Hunter,
screw all the other 'Nam movies, this one is the ultimate. The first russian roulette scenes were the most intense portrayal of Vietnam I have ever seen on film. intensely powerful movie.

City Of Men
pretty lame when compared to City Of God, didn't sit through the whole thing.

Slumdog Millionaire
damn good movie, however didn't quite live up to all the hype.

Heat
saw it a long time ago, I didn't follow it, I was really too young to catch on, watching it again was a really good idea, because its freakin' awesome, what a cast.

Amazing film, definitely, but I've always found Apocalypse Now to be much more powerful and disturbing personally. The intensity and portrayal of complete chaos and insanity in Apocalypse just always stays with me. There are few movies that actually frighten me, but just thinking of what it must have been like in that situation, on the river in the heart of Vietnam, is really terrifying.

You know, I've only seen about 15-20 minutes of that film. Its almost a sin. I adore everything I've seen from Coppola, but for some reason I just keep putting it off.

Phalanx 01-09-2009 05:10 PM

Puddle Cruiser - this was the lesser known first released "broken lizard" film.
A few funny moments, but yeah....feels like a student project....
At least 2 out of 4 of their movies were pretty good, the next one (slammin' salmon, trailers available) looks pretty funny too.

You need to get on that! One of the all-time greatest films, period.

---------------

Revolutionary Road (2008)

5 out of 5

Terrifying. This movie is real, made of flesh and blood and bone. At times the dramatic tension can boil to a point which is almost unbearable, making us as an audience feel emotions we don't usually at the movies; guilt, anxiety, suspicion, pity, doubt- at times the movie made me feel downright filthy. Big-scale performances here seem to defy the laws of acting, and instead of viewers we become voyeurs. At times DiCaprio and Winslet had me shaking, and at times I felt physically sick. It isn't so much the way the two actors can raise their voices, or stir up tears; it's the fear behind their eyes which is so remarkable. The performances are ones of interior showmanship as well as exterior. In the end, it's a grown-up game of house, with two children who want so badly a life of perfection that they become miserable with themselves, with each other, and with a world which never held its promises.

First- Mothman: Listen to Alky! See it as soon as you can!

I can't wait to see Revolutionary Road. I've only heard great things. A rec from you only makes it that much more exciting.

Dead Poets Society (1989) - 8/10.

Much better than I expected it to be. Robin Williams was suprisingly good in this.

watched The Prestige again tonight. I forgot how confusing this movie got.

I'll grab Apocalypse Now next time I see it, as for Revolutionary Road, I saw the trailer and it just looked like a relationship drama, sounds like its more than that though, i might check it out.

The Unborn

God it was awful. It was just like any other PG-13 Horror flick out there today. Every "scare" scene was way too predictible. I just hate how they can't be creative anymore.

2/10

Truly a ground breaking film, remarkable performances by DiCaprio & Winslet.

I think the problem is that he has pretty much gone with that trick too many times...never bothered with the happening though. Unbreakable, for me, is the guys best film by far and wide.

I just watched Max Payne.
Disappointingly boring, managed to capture the look of the game not so much the atmosphere. Mona Sax was completely miscast...didn't like the changes for the sake of changes...eh, it wasn't like "never watch this" material, but in all honesty barely managed to keep the interest.

To begin with i thought that as well. But in time Fellowship has won me over. Love how it starts all peacefull and then turns darker and darker. Also the change of scenes and atmosphere is overwhelming.

Monster76 01-10-2009 02:42 PM

Halloween 2 has been on the loop non-stop lately. Can't stop watching it. Best shot is when Michael is in the doctor's office and he's hiding behind the nurse and he's about to kill her. He moves up a bit and the glowing green light from the fish aquarium exposes half of his mask. BRILLIANT!

Persepolis

At first I was drawn to the look of the films but was quickly turned off by a trailer I saw. Eventually the charm of the animation drew me into seeing this one and I'm thankful for that. I expected (yet another) movie villainize the West but any Western hate was portrayed by characters and didn't feel like a generalization to me, I was surprised. Turned out to be one of the best coming of age stories I've seen.

Disease 01-10-2009 06:22 PM

My Name is Bruce

I thought the first half was rather bad, just bad..... nothing good about it, but then it just turned into a great flick....

I saw some trailers for it at the cinema, but missed my chance to catch it, I was a bit unsure about how preachy it would be. but hopefully I will see it soon.

It wasn't preachy at all; any disgust felt for any government or country seems more of a personal feeling coming from "real" characters rather than a political agenda being pushed by the film-makers.

A few more things that pissed me off about this.
You'd think with an adaptation they'd have given some more nods to the game, maybe had a tv playing "lords and ladies" or whatever? The narrative was all but gone, I mean it didn't need to be for the whole film, but maybe more than a few sentences. The music - I didn't DISLIKE this music but it didn't feel right, something closer to the original score in this case would've been good. Whalberg, was actually bland as hell in this, I was hoping for better after shooter.
and the thing that pisses me off most of all?
No scene tied into "the baseball bat".
Yeah, I don't think I'll ever buy this.

Definitely agreed.
Check this one out when you get a chance, Disease. Great film.

---------------------------

L'avventura (1960)

It took me a couple watches to really come around to Antonioni's message and technique here. It's a barren film, but appropriately so, as it deals with the idle upper class, the emptiness they try to fill with interaction (in this case, love). They float through life, eyes glazed, unable to perceive any real depth in themselves and others, trying only to satisfy their boredom as to not disappear.

A truly affecting classic.

The Mothman 01-10-2009 07:05 PM

watched The Professional again. Gary Oldman is priceless in this.

Phalanx 01-10-2009 11:18 PM

Watched Unbreakable while ironing.
Knowing the ending kind of takes something out of it, but it still remains a great movie, IMO, like the incredibles, without being based on any existing characters, manages to do better than most superhero films that are.

urgeok2 01-11-2009 06:25 AM

zack and miri make a porno - i was prepared to be disappointed this one but was pleasantly suprised .. really enjoyed it. less quirky characters and forced cameos ... this film fixed everything that went wrong with clerks 2
